GRS component parties agree to cooperate with Sabah PH in polls

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties have agreed for the Sabah-based coalition to work with Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH).
Its chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, responded briefly with "Yes" when asked if coalition members had agreed to the cooperation.
"We have discussed it," he said, reaffirming the collaboration with PH after closing the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) annual assembly at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.
Earlier in his speech, Hajiji credited the current political stability to the support of Sabah PH leaders during the "Kinabalu Move" in 2023, when his administration was nearly toppled.
Despite the cooperation with PH, Hajiji also called on voters to seize the opportunity to back the existing government, to ensure a locally based coalition continues to dominate Sabah's political landscape.
Meanwhile, Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, speaking on behalf of Sabah PH, thanked Hajiji for upholding the spirit of cooperation.
"As a PH leader, I welcome this cooperation. It is good news for the people of Sabah.
"We need to sit down and discuss the next steps, especially on seat allocations. Hopefully, it can be ironed out soon," he said, adding that PH is eyeing between 23 and 25 seats.
Of the 73 state seats, GRS currently holds 38, while PH holds seven.

High earners contributed bulk of RM37bil in income tax

KUALA LUMPUR: High-income earners contributed the bulk of the RM37.77 billion in individual income tax collected in 2023, the Dewan Rakyat was told. In a written parliamentary reply, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said those earning over RM100,000 a year accounted for 86 per cent of the total income tax revenue. The top 20 per cent of taxpayers, with taxable income of more than RM1 million, contributed one-fifth of the total collection. He said the government valued the contribution of high-income taxpayers to strengthening the country's fiscal position and was committed to addressing tax leakage involving undeclared assets, offshore income, cross-border transactions and online business activities. Efforts were also underway to improve tax administration efficiency through digitalisation and to raise public awareness, Anwar added. "The government greatly appreciates the role and contribution of high-income taxpayers in helping to boost economic stability and strengthen the fiscal position, so that national development can be carried out more equitably," he said in a written reply to Aminolhuda Hassan (PH-Sri Gading). Anwar said data on the number of individuals in Malaysia with a net worth of more than RM100 million was not available in the Inland Revenue Board's database, because wealth levels did not directly correspond with taxable income. This was in response to a question from Aminolhuda, who had asked for the number of individuals with a net worth exceeding RM100 million and how many from this group had paid more than RM1 million in income tax annually over the past five years. Anwar said certain assets, such as specific forms of property, were not subject to income tax unless they were sold or disposed of. He added that the structure and treatment of income tax were also continuously enhanced to ensure Malaysia's tax system remained fair and progressive.

Those with taxable incomes over RM100,000 a year contributed to 86% of individual income tax collected in 2023, says Finance Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: Individual taxpayers with taxable incomes exceeding RM100,000 annually contributed a significant 86% of the total individual income tax collected in 2023, says the Finance Ministry. It said this contribution formed part of the RM37.77bil in individual income tax collected by the government for that year, which represented 22% of the total direct tax collection of RM171.34bil. "Of this, the top 20% of taxpayers, with taxable incomes over RM1mil, played a substantial role in bolstering Malaysia's fiscal resources. "Their contributions are crucial in maintaining economic stability and supporting national development," said the ministry in a written Parliament reply on Aug 11 (Monday). Aminolhuda Hassan (PH-Sri Gading) had inquired about the number of individuals in Malaysia with net wealth exceeding RM100mil and their tax contributions. The ministry said such specific data was unavailable in the Inland Revenue Board's (LHDN) records, as net wealth does not directly correlate with income tax liabilities. "Certain assets are not subject to income tax unless sold or disposed of, such as real estate or specific investments," it said. The government, it added, appreciates the role of high-income taxpayers in bolstering economic stability and strengthening the country's fiscal position. "The government remains committed to enhancing tax compliance and addressing tax leakage issues, particularly among high-income individuals with assets and wealth not aligning with reported taxes. "This includes income kept in offshore accounts, cross-border transactions, domestic transfer pricing, online activities and shadow economy cases," it added. In addition to tackling tax leakage, the government is focused on improving tax administration efficiency through digitalisation and encouraging tax compliance via ongoing awareness efforts. "We are continually refining the structure and treatment of income tax to ensure a fair and progressive taxation system in Malaysia," it added.

Israeli airstrike kills two Al Jazeera correspondents in Gaza City

ISTANBUL: Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohamed Qraiqea were killed on Sunday (Aug 10), along with three other journalists, in an Israeli strike targeting a journalists' tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in western Gaza City, according to the Gaza Media Office. Anadolu Agency, citing the Qatar-based channel, quoted the director of the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza as saying, "Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohamed Qraiqea were martyred in an Israeli strike on their tent," without providing further details. The channel later confirmed the deaths of al-Sharif and Qraiqea in the strike. The Gaza Media Office announced that the number of journalists killed since the start of Israel's offensive in Gaza on Oct 7, 2023, has risen to 237, following the deaths of al-Sharif and Qraiqea, along with three other journalists. The other journalists killed have been identified as photojournalists Ibrahim Dahir and Moumin Alaywa, and assistant photojournalist Mohammed Noufal. "The assassination was premeditated and deliberate, with a direct targeting of the journalists' tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. This heinous crime also resulted in injuries to several other journalists," it stated. Dr Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, told Anadolu that the death toll from the strike on the tent in front of the complex's gate has risen to seven, including five journalists. Meanwhile, the Israeli army admitted in a statement to killing al-Sharif in Gaza City, while ignoring the deaths of Qraiqea and the three other journalists in the same strike. In his will, which he requested be published after his death, al-Sharif wrote: "This is my will and my final message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice. "Allah knows that I gave all the effort and strength I had to be a support and a voice for my people ever since I opened my eyes to life in the alleys and streets of Jabalia refugee camp," he said. "I have lived pain in all its forms and tasted grief and loss many times. Yet I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, hoping that Allah would bear witness against those who remained silent, those who accepted our killing, those who suffocated our breath, and whose hearts were unmoved by the scattered bodies of our children and women, and who did not stop the massacre our people have been subjected to for more than a year and a half." Israel is facing mounting condemnation for its war on Gaza, where it has killed more than 61,000 victims since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. – Bernama-Anadolu
