Rohit Shamra's Childhood Coach Reveals: 'First Saw Him As A Bowler, He Was...'

News183 days ago
Rohit Sharma started as a bowler at 12. His coach, Dinesh Lad, saw his batting talent, making him a top white-ball cricket opener.
India's ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, is widely regarded as one of the most destructive opening batters in white-ball cricket, known for breaking records and dominating attacks. Despite his celebrated batting prowess, his journey to the top began quite differently. According to his childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, Rohit initially started his cricketing career as a bowler at the age of 12.
Recalling his first encounter with Rohit during a match against his own team, Lad said he was immediately impressed and urged Rohit's uncle to enroll the youngster in his school.
'I first saw him as a bowler, he was about 12 years old. I saw him playing a match against us. Then I told his uncle (Chacha) to get him admitted to my school. The school started in 1995, and I saw Rohit in 1999. He took admission that year. In the first year, he was in under 14. During practice, I kept making him bowl. Next year, Rohit went to 8th standard and was 14 years old," Rohit's coach Lad revealed during a podcast.
How Rohit Turned From Bowler To Batter?
However, Lad admitted he made a mistake by not testing Rohit's batting skills early on. The turning point came when he noticed Rohit practicing in the nets.
'I felt he should be kept in both the under-16 and under-14 teams. One day, while entering the school, I saw a boy knocking (batting). From outside, I saw the bat was coming very straight and good. I didn't know it was Rohit at first. When I went inside, I asked him if he was batting. He said yes, sir. Then I gave him some batting in the nets at number six or seven. Before that, I had never given him batting practice. That was my mistake," he continued.
Rohit made an immediate impact, scoring a fluent 40 runs from number seven in a match, despite the team's loss. Impressed, Lad began promoting him up the order during nets, eventually placing him in the second and third positions. The young Rohit displayed remarkable batting talent, prompting Lad to advise him to focus on batting while continuing to bowl.
'He batted well. In a match, he went in at number seven and scored 40 runs. Very good 40, but unfortunately, we lost the match. When the under-14 practice started after the Harris Shield, the Giles Shield practice was on, I started giving him batting at second and third position in nets. The way he was batting, I felt he had a very good talent for batting. So it was important for him to focus on it. I told him to focus more on batting but keep bowling too," Lad added.
That decision would shape the career of one of India's greatest openers, transforming a young bowler into a batting powerhouse who would go on to dominate world cricket.

Did Irfan Pathan's criticism of Rohit Sharma lead to his IPL commentary exit? New Sydney Test interview details emerge

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan broke his silence on being removed from commentary for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). Reports had suggested he was snubbed for "bringing personal grudges on-air" and targeting players with whom he "had a fallout a few years ago." While no names were explicitly mentioned, Rohit Sharma was widely speculated to be among them. Pathan has now addressed the matter. Did Rohit Sharma criticism cost Irfan Pathan his IPL commentary spot? On Lallantop's show Guest in the Newsroom, Pathan was asked point-blank whose criticism had led to his commentary snub in the IPL, and the former World Cup winner explained that it was part of his duty as a commentator to provide honest analysis for the fans rather than shield players. "Look, I believe that the job of commentators is to tell the story beyond what is visible, what is happening, why it is happening, and why it is happening. What can happen, why and how can it happen? This is the job of a commentator. If a player performs well, then praise him. If he cannot do so, then criticise him. The responsibility of the commentator is not for the player but for the fans," he said. The veteran cricketer then spoke about criticising Rohit for his performance in Test cricket during the 2024/25 season, when he scored just 164 runs across eight matches, with only one fifty to show. Pathan explained that he only wanted to tell the truth to the fans. "Rohit Sharma is an amazing white-ball player. However, his average in Test cricket that year was 6. So we said that if Rohit was not the captain, he would not have got a place in the playing eleven," he said. Earlier on Wednesday, Lallantop released a teaser of their interview with Pathan, in which he sensationally revealed how commentators were forced to back Rohit despite his below-par performance in Test cricket, following the former India Test captain's decision to 'opt out' of the Sydney game against Australia. It has now been revealed that Pathan's comment was merely a follow-up response to his clarification on why he was removed from IPL commentary. "People say that we have supported Rohit over the top. Obviously, if anyone comes on your broadcasting channel, you will not misbehave with them. Like you have invited me, I have come, so you will show politeness. And you should show politeness. When Rohit also came, he was our guest. It was presented as if we are supporting him. But we were the ones who said that he does not deserve a place. However, this did not work. The interview thing was more talked about," he said.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma should keep playing ODIs to guide juniors: Suresh Raina

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina believes that having both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Indian ODI side remains crucial, as their vast experience can guide the next generation of players to eventually take up the leadership future of both stalwarts remains uncertain. Since retiring from Test cricket earlier this year and guiding India to a Champions Trophy victory in March, neither Kohli nor Rohit has played an international however, feels their presence in the ODI setup could be invaluable. "Rohit and Virat's experience is very important It's crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit," Raina told Telecom Asia Sport."They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cups. Virat won the last IPL also. For the astute leadership they have shown during their respective careers, they need to be part of the dressing room," he the Asia Cup approaching in the T20I format, there is speculation that both senior stars could make their return to international cricket during the tour of Australia later this year, which includes three SIRAJ — INDIA'S ALL-FORMAT STARRaina also heaped praise on Mohammed Siraj for his impressive performances in the recent Test series against England. The former India batter believes the Hyderabad pacer has earned his place across all formats."Siraj should be part of the Indian set-up in all three formats, given how he has performed for the country with both the white ball and red ball. He bowled 187 overs in the series and came through without any niggle," Raina ability to deliver in high-pressure situations and maintain consistency across formats has made him one of India's most dependable bowlers. His inclusion in all formats, Raina argues, will give the team balance and depth in the pace India looks to manage the transition between generations, the blend of experienced leaders like Rohit and Virat alongside rising stars such as Gill and Siraj could be key to maintaining the team's success in the years ahead.- EndsMust Watch

'In the 2007-08 series against Australia, I played the first three matches and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the side. I wasn't picked for a while after that. 'I went to Tendulkar and said, 'I am thinking of retiring from ODIs'. He said, 'No. I went through a similar phase in 1999-2000, where I felt I should leave cricket. But that phase came and went.
