Police probing Parliament scuffle that left officer injured

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said a report has been lodged regarding the incident which resulted in an officer requiring medical treatment. PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating a commotion during the submission of a memorandum and a draft bill outside Parliament which is said to have left a police officer injured today. Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said a report had been lodged regarding the incident. The police officer required medical treatment. Fadil said the case is being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for the use of criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty, and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. Section 353 provides for a jail term of up to two years or a fine, while Section 427 provides for a jail term of not less than a year and not more than five years, a fine, or both, upon conviction. In a statement, Fadil referenced a video on TikTok which saw participants of a gathering 'provoking and forcefully breaching' police officers who were on duty during the event at Jalan Parlimen. He said police respected the public's right to express opinions and to assemble peacefully, and were committed to playing their role as a facilitator at such events. '(But) these rights should be exercised responsibly and prudently,' he said. 'Firm action will be taken against individuals or groups who instigate chaos or engage in excessive provocation.' Earlier today, FMT reported that more than 100 plantation workers from Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kedah and Johor marched from Taman Tugu in the capital to Parliament to submit a memorandum on housing and a draft bill making it compulsory for estates to provide homes for local plantation workers. Police blocked the group from gathering at Parliament's gates but later allowed the workers to hand over the documents to deputy law and institutional reform minister M Kulasegaran and opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan.

Tun Musa (right) receiving a souvenir from Wong. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 12): The public, including in Sabah and Sarawak, is advised to refer to registered news agencies for accurate and verified information. Chairman of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, stated that agencies like Bernama and Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) are among the primary sources to ensure the public receives truthful news. 'This step is crucial to prevent the public from being influenced by inaccurate, slanderous, or politically motivated news circulating on social media. 'In an era of fake news and various allegations, it is the responsibility of government news agencies to deliver accurate news to the people while ensuring coverage and information conveyed are truthful,' he told the media after paying a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, on Tuesday. The visit aimed to introduce himself as the Bernama chairman, effective since 1 September, to the Head of State of Sabah. Elaborating further, Wong said Bernama is committed to enhancing the quality of news coverage in Sabah, aligning with significant upcoming developments in the state, including the State Election (PRN) and various current issues. He stated that Sabah is an important state, and the national news agency will improve coverage through various initiatives to ensure every development is conveyed to the people swiftly and accurately. 'I have pledged to His Excellency to enhance coverage in Sabah and explore measures to ensure reporting quality continues to improve. 'As the government news agency, we will remain a trusted news source for the people, thereby strengthening confidence in the information delivered,' he said. Wong's visit, which was his first since Tun Musa took office as the 11th Governor of Sabah in January, was accompanied by Bernama Sabah Bureau chief Fadzli Ramli, journalist Noorazlina Jindeh, and photographer Zamain Singkui. Tun Musa, a former Chief Minister of Sabah, was sworn in as the State's Governor for a four-year term beginning Jan 1, 2025. He succeeded Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, who served four terms from Jan 1, 2011, until his tenure ended on Dec 31, 2024.

Tun Musa Aman calls for thorough, transparent investigation into Zara Qairina's death

KOTA KINABALU: Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah Tun Musa Aman has directed the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Istana Seri Kinabalu stressed that the investigation must be conducted with impartiality, free from fear or favour, and be grounded in truth and justice. 'The post-mortem was conducted yesterday, and the investigation is ongoing as authorities await the results. 'Every aspect of the case must be thoroughly examined. Seeking justice is not an act of revenge; rather, it is a command from Allah SWT to protect the vulnerable and to hold the guilty accountable,' the palace said in a statement, today. Istana Seri Kinabalu also urged all parties to allow the legal process to proceed fairly, and to support Zara Qairina's family in their pursuit of answers and justice. Therefore, the palace urged the public, especially social media users, to refrain from speculation, spreading baseless allegations, or promoting conspiracy theories related to the case. The statement emphasised that such actions could undermine the integrity of the investigation, and deepen the pain of Zara's grieving family. 'Tun Musa and Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, along with the entire nation, extend their deepest condolences and sympathy to Zara's family, praying that they are granted strength and patience in facing this trial,' the statement said. Meanwhile, a state-level tahlil recitation for Zara Qairina will be held this Thursday (Aug 14), after Maghrib prayer, at the Bandaraya Mosque, here. A similar event will also be conducted simultaneously at all mosques and surau throughout the state, on that day. The statement added that Tun Musa encourages Muslims to attend the event, while non-Muslims are invited to offer prayers for Zara Qairina according to their own beliefs. He also emphasised that the safety and welfare of children must always be a priority for everyone. 'Tun Musa prays that Allah SWT will grant her a place among the righteous and asks for strength for us to protect our children and prevent such tragedies from recurring,' the statement said. Last Friday, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said that the body of Zara Qairina needed to be exhumed, to allow a post-mortem examination to be conducted. The AGC added that further police investigations were necessary, to ensure a thorough examination of all aspects of the case. Following this, on Saturday, the teenager's body was exhumed from the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, and taken to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for the post-mortem. Her remains were reburied at the same cemetery early this morning. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. The student had been taken to the hospital after being found severely injured and unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory, in Papar, at 4 am on July 16. - Bernama
