'Hindu' Gauri Khan On Respecting Shah Rukh Khan's Religion: 'Doesn't Mean I'd Become A Muslim'
Gauri Khan once shared how she keeps her Hindu faith alive, celebrates Diwali despite being married to Muslim Shah Rukh Khan and navigates a loving interfaith home.
Gauri Khan has quietly but firmly shown how to balance love, faith and family. Married to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan for 34 years, she has maintained her Hindu identity while embracing an interfaith household. From leading Diwali poojas to navigating her husband's Islamic traditions, Gauri has created a home where respect and celebration of both religions flourish.
Long before Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan wedding in October 1991, Gauri's parents worried about her converting to Islam. 'There was a lot of concern," she recalled, as even attempts were made to change Shah Rukh's name to Abhinav. She later called the idea 'unnecessary and childish." Shah Rukh lightened tense moments with his signature humour, joking that Gauri might wear a burkha and adopt a Muslim name, which briefly shocked her family.
On Koffee With Karan, Gauri discussed her religion
'There is a balance, I respect Shah Rukh's religion but that doesn't mean that I would convert and become a Muslim. I don't believe in that. I think everybody is an individual and follow their religion. But, obviously there should be no disrespect. Like Shah Rukh would not disrespect my religion as well."
Shah Rukh Khan And Gauri Celebrating Diwali And Eid With Their Children
Gauri leads Diwali celebrations, while Shah Rukh takes charge of Eid. Speaking on Ladies First, she explained how the children enjoy both festivals: 'Our kids embrace both festivals, often following Shah Rukh's lead, and enjoy celebrating both Diwali and Eid."
Shah Rukh has shared that this dual-religion upbringing sometimes left the children confused. In a 2013 interview with Outlook Turning Points, he said he would respond with humour that they are Indian first, and their core identity is humanity, jokingly referencing a Hindi film song.
Beyond being Shah Rukh's wife, Gauri has built a formidable career as a film producer, fashion designer, and celebrity interior designer. She was named one of Fortune Magazine's '50 Most Powerful Women" in 2018 and appeared on the cover of Vogue India in 2008, earning the title 'First Lady of Bollywood." She continues to maintain her individuality while raising Aryan, Suhana, and Abram, blending traditions and modern family values.

Hema Malini REVEALS She Didn't Want To Play Basanti In Sholay: 'Wasn't Excited, Itna Chota Role'
Hema Malini revealed how director Ramesh Sippy convinced her to say yes to Sholay. 50 Years of Sholay: Hema Malini starred as Basanti in Ramesh Sippy's Sholay, and it remains one of her most iconic roles to date. However, the actress was first hesitant to say yes to the part as she felt that the role was too small. In a chat with the Hindustan Times, Hema Malini revealed that Ramesh Sippy convinced her to say yes by telling her she would regret not being part of the film. Hema Malini said, 'When the film was first offered to me, I wasn't very excited about it. I even asked him 'Are you sure? You are offering me ek tange walli ka role, itna chota role?' See, I had worked with him earlier in Andaz and Seeta Aur Geeta, where I had a double role." 'So when he said, 'There are so many artists in the film, and you're also playing one character,' I felt it was a small role. I told him, 'This doesn't inspire me.' But he looked at me and said, 'Just say yes. Otherwise, you will repent.' That's exactly what I did, and I'm thankful I listened," she added. However, playing Basanti wasn't completely easy for her. She recalled, 'I was a bit confused about how to deliver the dialogues. Then Javed (Akhtar) sat with me, narrated the scene, and enacted it himself. I just picked up the way he said it and added my own flair. That's how it became what it is today. Even now, people come up to me and quote Basanti's dialogues. It makes them so happy—and that makes me happy too." Hema reflected, 'Who knew that Basanti would become so iconic today? When I go in gathering, I can't get off the stage till the time I don't recite one of Basanti's dialogues. That's her craze in today's time. Basanti was ahead of her time even 50 years ago. Ek ladki jo tanga chalati hai, she was a self-made woman." She added, 'She lived life on her own terms. She was all alone and still looked after herself. That is what made the character special. Even now, when I think of her, I feel she truly represents what we today call 'aatma nirbhar.' So in a way, she was ahead of her time. And imagine, back then, I didn't even know how important that would become one day." 'I've seen a few shows where they talk about Basanti or use it as a reference, but I'm not very active on social media. I've heard that there are many memes and that people love quoting her dialogues," the veteran actress said. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Kareena Kapoor Said Barack Obama Must Have Discussed Her Wedding With Saif: 'Sure He'd Know'
Kareena's remark was made out of annoyance and she questioned why her wedding had become a topic of national interest. Actors Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan first crossed paths on the sets of Tashan in 2008. Their chemistry soon blossomed into love, and they eventually got married in 2012. However, before they tied the knot, their dating life often grabbed headlines, and fans were eager to know all the details about their nuptials. In an old interview with The Hindustan Times, Kareena said that this annoyed her and questioned why her wedding had become a topic of national interest. Kareena Kapoor said, 'I have no idea as to why it is becoming national news. I think we should bring that up in the Rajya Sabha, as this is all that people care about. Mr Obama, too, should be discussing this wedding. I am sure he would know that Saif and Kareena are getting married, as that is what the whole of India is talking about." She added, 'I mean, nobody is talking about inflation, the election and other important issues; all they want to know is when is the wedding, what are they wearing, what is the venue, who all are invited and so on. Honestly, it is terribly annoying, and now we have given up on clarifying it. We are in a committed relationship, and when we are getting married is for Saif and me to know." However, when Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan finally decided to get married, they encountered significant challenges. Alongside the usual fanfare that surrounds Bollywood's most high-profile unions, the couple faced severe threats, including death threats and threats against their families. Nonetheless, the two stood firm in their decision, choosing to go ahead with a private ceremony. Reflecting on the time, Saif Ali Khan had revealed to Rediff that Kareena's father, Randhir Kapoor, had received anonymous letters filled with threats, claiming that the family would be harmed, and even suggesting that their wedding venue could be targeted. However, Saif remained undeterred, drawing strength from his family's history. He recalled that his parents, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore, had also faced similar resistance during their interfaith marriage in the 1960s. The couple tied the knot on October 16, 2012, at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Colaba, Mumbai. They have been setting relationship goals ever since. Saif and Kareena decided to get married after living together for five years. The actress and the actor welcomed their first son, Taimur Ali Khan, in 2016 and their second son, Jeh Ali Khan, in 2021.
