Reuters02-08-2025
August 2 - Brenton Doyle capped a five-run ninth inning with a two-run home run, and the Colorado Rockies rallied after giving up nine runs in the first to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 17-16 on Friday night in Denver.
Hunter Goodman also went deep in the ninth, Warming Bernabel had four hits -- including a three-run home run and his first career triple -- and Ezequiel Tovar tied a franchise record with four doubles for Colorado.
The Rockies trailed 16-12 entering the ninth but Goodman hit a one-out homer, his 20th of the year, to start the rally against Dennis Santana (3-3). Bernabel tripled to drive in Jordan Beck and then scored on Thairo Estrada's single.
Doyle followed with the first walk-off homer of his career and his fourth hit of the game. He sent an 0-1 slider 406 feet to left-center.
Dugan Darnell (1-0), who made his major league debut with a scoreless eighth and ninth innings, got the victory for Colorado.
For the Pirates, Oneil Cruz hit a grand slam, Andrew McCutchen homered and finished with three hits and five RBIs, Nick Gonzales had four hits and Bryan Reynolds and Isiah Kiner-Falefa finished with three hits apiece.
Joey Bart walked four times and was hit by a pitch for the Pirates, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.
Pittsburgh built a 9-0 lead in the first on Reynolds' RBI single, Cruz's grand slam and a three-run shot by McCutchen, after Kiner-Falefa's RBI single chased starter Antonio Senzatela.
Senzatela allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks after getting just two outs.
The Rockies chipped away, scoring once in the first and closing within 9-4 on Bernabel's three-run homer in the third off starter Andrew Heaney, his third of the season. The Pirates scored three times in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the lead to 15-6, but Colorado answered in its half of the fifth.
Doyle walked, Kyle Farmer singled and Mickey Moniak, Tyler Freeman and Tovar followed with doubles off reliever Thomas Harrington to make it 15-10.
The Pirates added another run in the sixth when Jimmy Herget hit Bart to drive in McCutchen.
Yanquiel Fernandez's two-run homer in the eighth, the first of his career, pulled Colorado within 16-12.

At the time of writing - Fleetwood holds a one-shot lead at 14-under from countryman Justin Rose - and he will look to hold on to that ascendency on the fourth and final day of play in Memphis today. Piers Morgan releases statement about Jake Paul and ‘staged' career after boxer hires lawyer to fight ‘fix' claims

PIERS MORGAN has clarified his comments that Jake Paul's boxing career has been "staged" following news the YouTuber is taking legal action to fight claims his bouts are fixed. Paul, 28, has reportedly taken legal steps to defend his reputation after persistent claims that his fights are rigged. 4 4 Paul has retained top attorney Alex Spiro to address and counteract what he and his team say are false and damaging comments. Spiro, who has represented the likes of Elon Musk, Jay-Z and Alec Baldwin, said in a statement: "I've been retained by Mr. Paul to pursue legal redress for the damages he has suffered. "If someone uses their public soapbox to harm him and the sport with lies, there will be consequences." Paul has come under criticism for his boxing career to date and received a slew of claims of "rigged" and "fixed" fights following his unanimous decision win over former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June. Among those critics was Piers Morgan, who himself used the phrase "boring staged bull***t" to describe Paul's boxing career. Now Morgan has taken to X to release a statement clarifying those comments. He wrote: "I posted a few weeks ago that Jake Paul's boxing career has been 'boring staged bulls***.' "What I meant is that his fights have been predominantly against older, past-their-prime opponents, which may be lucrative for both sides, and may have entertainment value. 4 "But don't reveal how he stacks up against currently ranked boxers and therefore are not a good look for the sport. "I did not intend to suggest that the outcome was predetermined and certainly didn't mean to suggest anything illegal. "But if reports are correct that Jake is now in negotiations to fight Anthony Joshua, that would obviously be a seriously credible bout against one of the best heavyweights in the world. "Jake is welcome to come on Uncensored to discuss this, and verbally slug it out with me, anytime." Paul's manager and co-founder of MVP promotions, Nakisa Bidarian, previously warned that comments labelling Paul's fight as rigged are defamatory and would be met with legal backlash. Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, he said: "When you definitively state that Jake is putting on staged or rigged fights, that's just defamation, and you're causing substantial damage to his business, to MVP's business, and something that's 100 per cent not true." Adding: "We're having to have conversations with our partners that are just unjustifiable. Our legal representation is looking at multiple individuals to go after." 4

Son savours warm reception during MLS debut for LAFC in Illinois

Aug 10 (Reuters) - Son Heung-min said he had never experienced such a welcoming atmosphere at an away game after making his Major League Soccer debut for Los Angeles FC against Chicago Fire, where he was greeted by a packed crowd at SeatGeek Stadium in Illinois. Son joined LAFC on a record-breaking MLS transfer on Wednesday after a 10-year spell at Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. At Tottenham, he bagged 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 appearances and led them to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League title in May. The 33-year-old South Korea skipper made a lively debut in black and gold colours late on Saturday, drawing a penalty to rescue a 2-2 draw with Chicago. "This was an exciting time for a whole week joining LAFC, it was huge," Son told reporters. "There was only one thing I wanted to do and today, being on the pitch, I think it was fantastic. "With the result it's a little bit disappointing, because I think we should have gotten three points here, but generally I think I'm very, very happy and excited. "I really enjoyed it. You never had this coming from away games. I used to play in the Premier League. When I played at away grounds they were always booing me and always booing the players. But it was nice to see people were celebrating, people were enjoying the football." Son's move is expected to resonate with Los Angeles' sizeable Korean community. The team's stadium is just south of Koreatown. He follows in the footsteps of other international stars who have joined LAFC, including Carlos Vela, Giorgio Chiellini, Olivier Giroud as well as former Tottenham teammates Gareth Bale and Hugo Lloris. "I want to do well for MLS because I came here to make this league big," Son said. LAFC are fifth in the Western Conference and next visit New England Revolution on August 16.
