'Fortnite' Using A.I. Darth Vader Is Another Step Toward the Dark Side

'Fortnite' Using A.I. Darth Vader Is Another Step Toward the Dark Side

Yahoo21-05-2025
Darth Vader has a new enemy, but it isn't the Jedi Order reborn. It's the Screen Actors Guild. On May 16, as part of a month-long collaboration between Epic Games' Fortnite and Disney-owned Star Wars, Darth Vader was added to Fortnite Battle Royale as an optional, recruitable ally. What's unusual about Vader is that players can "talk" to him; by pressing a special button, players can say anything into their headsets to Vader, and the Sith Lord will respond using conversational artificial intelligence. The technology uses the voice of the late James Earl Jones, who played Darth Vader in the films.
Epic Games wrote on its official blog that Fortnite's A.I. Vader was created with the involvement of Jones' estate: "We're honored to feature the voice of the late Mr. Jones and we thank his estate for the opportunity to make this happen for players," wrote Epic in a statement.
However, the union that represents professional actors, SAG-AFTRA, says that Epic violated labor practices by failing to notify the union, "and without bargaining with us over appropriate terms."
"We celebrate the right of our members and their estates to control the use of their digital replicas and welcome the use of new technologies to allow new generations to share in the enjoyment of those legacies and renowned roles," reads SAG-AFTRA's statement.
It should be emphasized the use of Jones's voice is not the problem here; the actor signed over the rights to his voice to Lucasfilm in 2022, and even worked with Ukranian-based A.I. firm Respeecher prior to his death. The first instance of an A.I. Vader was not Fortnite, but for the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Gamers asking Vader vulgar questions or making him cuss—which Epic issued a swift hotfix after players caught the dark lord dropping F-bombs—isn't the issue either. It's that Fortnite released an A.I. Darth Vader, a character otherwise performed by union members, during a major ongoing strike against video game companies by the actors' union.
Adds SAG-AFTRA: "However, we must protect our right to bargain terms and conditions around uses of voice that replace the work of our members, including those who previously did the work of matching Darth Vader's iconic rhythm and tone in video games." The union announced it filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against Epic Games' Llama Productions.
While yes, it's awfully funny to ask Darth Vader about Skibidi Toilet and Sabrina Carpenter—and in one Reddit user's case, receive an unexpectedly moving response after they told Vader about their recently deceased grandmother—AI's concerning potential to replace human artists evolves at lightspeed. Generative artificial intelligence was at the center of the 2023 dual labor strikes in Hollywood, and in July 2024, SAG-AFTRA began its strike against major gaming publishers over an industry-wide rush to adopt of A.I. Among the parties SAG-AFTRA is striking against is Fortnite's publishers Epic Games. "We're not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse A.I. to the detriment of our members," said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher in the union's July 2024 strike announcement.
The real disturbance in the Force is how Epic felt emboldened to drop its A.I. Vader while it is in active dispute with the actors' union over A.I. Since 2024, Epic Games has enjoyed splashy investment from Star Wars' parent company, Disney, with Fortnite as the crux of their partnership. That a tech giant backed by one of the biggest movie studios in the world implemented a virtual novelty action figure—without concerning the labor union that advocates protections for humans from A.I.—comes across as one of the biggest gestures of arrogance yet. The future is yet to be written, but as people grow alarmingly comfortable with artificial intelligence, it may already be decided.

Lego's August Releases Are Going Merry

Lego usually has quiet months and big months in terms of releases, but by far and away the two most important times of the year for Lego—and most threatening for your wallet as a Lego fan—are the start of it in January and the height of summer in August. The latter is finally here, and Lego has a lot of options for if you want to beat the heat by staying inside and building bricks. A lot of options. With dozens upon dozens upon dozens of new sets arriving today, it's hard to really break down particular highlights, with almost every major Lego line getting at least a couple of releases, alongside stalwarts like Marvel and Star Wars getting massive new waves. There are even a few entirely new lines making their debut amid the mania too, like the highly anticipated arrival of Lego One Piece, inspired by the Netflix adaptation. Check out all those, and more, in our roundup of the most interesting sets arriving this month! Lego has a few Technic sets out this month, but the standout in our genre-nerd eyes has to be this amazing rover set, inspired by the fabled Lego Space line. The kit comes with a primary moon rover, as well as smaller builds for a mining rover and MAPP rover, and some moon rocks they can collect into a sample container. ($100, available here). The multibuild creator sets are always an opportunity to sneak in some nods to other Lego lines, and August's offerings include a pretty fun new Lego Castle set for any medieval fantasy fans (introducing a new faction) and a cutie-spooky Monster Fighters homage in the Haunted Mansion. But then, consider this! There is also Beautiful Horse. Its beauty is, perhaps, in the eye of the beholder. Inspired by the first season of the Netflix live-action adaptation of the seminal anime and manga, Lego is going all out for the debut of One Piece as a line, right in time for the excitement around season two. From small sets to massive adult-focused kits like the Baratie, there's something for every fan of the show here—but of course the highlight has to be the Going Merry, which comes with the complete (up to this point in the series) Straw Hat crew in one place. Speaking of Netflix shows gearing up for season two! Just in time for the first volume of Wednesday's return to hit the streamer next week, Lego has concocted a buildable black dahlia flower, complete with minidolls of Wednesday and Professor Thornhill. ($28, available here). It's a big Spider-Man wave for Lego Marvel in August, but there are some more Avenging sets around, like sets inspired by Iron Man 2 and Endgame. That doesn't stop the webslinger from taking the prize, though, in the form of a subway train set inspired by the classic one Lego released for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. The Mario line has been on a bit of a karting kick lately, and August is no exception. But not every set is about that kart life: we get a couple of fun Toad buildable sets, including one inspired by Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. The first Decepticon to join the Lego Transformers line, Soundwave can transform between robot and cassette player mode and comes with buildable (and similarly transforming) Ravage and Laserbeak minions that can sit in his tape deck. He even plays sounds from a special brick built into his torso unit! ($190, available here) Away from the glow of the movie release, things are back to normal for Lego Minecraft, which offers a special piece of gaming advice this month: maybe don't build your house out of TNT. It's a very big and very expensive month for Star Wars fans with an eclectic mix of sets on offer—from a tease of the next Lego Star Wars animated adventure to a new UCS AT-ST and even some buildable characters in the form of K-2SO and Wicket. This cute gaming model replicates a classic arcade machine, which in itself hides a little gamer cave for the included minifigure to hang out in. ($40, available here). There are still a few more villagers and locales Nintendo and Lego can add to your islands this month, including Blathers' museum! Metal Sonic strikes in the handful of Sonic sets we get this month, which splits Knuckles, Sonic, and Tails across two different villainous battles. Cultural reappraisals aside, one thing that's always been beloved about Batman Forever is its slick Batmobile, which Lego is wonderfully recreating in this new display model—complete with a minifigure Batman inspired by the film's Sonar Batsuit. ($100, available here). Want more io9 news? STAR WARS Is Heading Back to Theaters for Its 50th Anniversary Celebration — GeekTyrant

It's hard to believe, but Star Wars is about to turn 50 years old, and how is the galaxy far, far away planning to celebrate this massive milestone? By heading back to where it all began… the big screen. Disney just announced that George Lucas' original Star Wars will be re-released in theaters on April 30, 2027, giving fans a chance to experience the iconic space adventure the way it was meant to be seen. While the official anniversary lands on May 25, 2027, Disney is dropping the re-release a little early because that weekend is already locked in for the debut of a brand-new film, Star Wars: Starfighter , starring Ryan Gosling. This theatrical return comes hot on the heels of Star Wars Celebration Los Angeles, which runs from April 1 to 4, 2027. With all eyes on the franchise during that time, you can bet Lucasfilm will lean in hard on promoting the return of the original film. There's even a chance we'll see some of the original cast and crew reunite during the celebration. The big mystery right now is what version of Star Wars fans will get. Will it be the 1997 Special Edition, the version George Lucas considers definitive, complete with added scenes and updated visual effects? That's the safe bet. But there's a growing glimmer of hope among die-hard fans. Just last month, Kathleen Kennedy attended a rare screening of an untouched original print of Star Wars , not even labeled as Episode IV: A New Hope . That screening has fans wondering if Lucasfilm is gearing up for something even more special. Maybe they're cooking up a new restoration of the unaltered theatrical version. Or even a version that fuses the best elements from both cuts. Whatever it is, if Lucasfilm drops the original, unedited classic, it'll be the holy grail moment fans have been dreaming of. The 1977 classic tells the story of a farm boy named Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill, who gets swept into a galaxy-wide rebellion with Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), and the roguish Han Solo (Harrison Ford). It changed cinema forever and kicked off a cultural phenomenon that includes sequels, prequels, spinoffs, shows, novels, comics, and a mountain of collectibles. So, get ready to relive the magic. Whether it's the original theatrical cut or the Special Edition, Star Wars returning to theaters in 2027 is going to be a fun event for longtime fans and a perfect introduction for a new generation.

‘Golden Bachelor' Mel Owens confronted by contestants on show after his age remarks

Mel Owens is correcting his recent fumble. The former NFL star, 66, revealed that while filming this season of 'The Golden Bachelor,' some of the contestants confronted him for his ageist remarks. Owens had said in June that he refuses to date women over the age of 60. 8 Mel Owens in May at the Disney Upfront. Disney 'One of the dates was a roast. It was brutal,' he confessed to Glamour in an interview published on Friday. 'They were killing me…. It was good.' After all, Owens knows he was in the wrong for his comments. 8 Mel Owens in New York City. Disney 'My reference of dating was 39, 40 years old,' he explained to the outlet. 'I hadn't dated in 26, 27 years. And at that point, I still hadn't dated, so my reference was my age, basically. That's what I told my friend.' However, Owens' pal didn't agree with the attorney. He added, 'She goes, 'It doesn't matter. You've said some things that are just incredibly wrong.' And I go, 'I've got to apologize.'' 8 Mel Owens poses with Jessi Ngatikaura and Layla Taylor. Disney Owens also set the record straight on why he agreed to do the reality show despite not wanting to date anyone over 60. 'Because I didn't know anything about 'The Golden Bachelor' ages,' he confessed. 'I didn't know the age range. To me, the age range was 45 to 60. That's my age range. I go, 'Oh, okay.' So I'm thinking that's the 'gold' years for me. My reference again was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn't dated in 26 years, so I had no clue. And that's why the comment. I didn't know.' While on the 'MGoBlue Podcasts with Jon Jansen' in June, Owens also made the jab that he wasn't interested in dating women with any artificial hips. 8 Mel Owens and Ryan Clark at the Disney Upfront. Disney Looking back, the athlete regrets that statement. 'I know [that's not right]. People run marathons. I'm an attorney, I represent athletes with injuries, and most of them are football, hockey, and a lot of them have artificial hips,' he went on. 'I apologized to the women on the show. When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.' And hopefully, these last two, three weeks, I earned some of that back.' After Owens' podcast appearance, fans called for the reality star to be recast. The news made its way back to Owens. 8 Mel Owens and Hannah Storm smile for the camera. Disney 'My friend asked me, 'Hey, are you getting replaced?' I go, 'Not that I know of,'' he recalled, admitting that he would have been upset if he had been. 'Looking back on it and looking forward, it's a great experience,' Owens gushed. 'It's such a great experience for me, and so, oh yeah, I wouldn't have wanted to be recast. But I'm going to earn it back just by being myself and being fair and apologetic and honest and be myself.' Not everyone is so quick to give this year's golden bachelor a second chance. Some fans shared they won't be tuning in when Owens' season airs next month. 8 Mel Owens is the new 'Golden Bachelor.' Disney But the California resident thinks that would be a mistake. 'Well, if you don't tune in, you'll never know,' Owens teased. 'So you got to tune in. And again, I'm trying to earn it back. So, watch the show and see if I earn it back. Because I apologized.' 'To earn it back, you have to be earnest in your work to get the trust back,' Owens continued. 'And everybody there is smart and they can see through you if you're lying or you don't mean what you say. That's why I say tune in.' 8 Mel Owens chats with other attendees at the Disney Upfront. Disney Along with urging fans to turn on their televisions, the ABC star knows he deserved the criticism he received. 'But I deserved [the anger],' Owens added. 'That was a mistake by me. It's unfair. It's insensitive, like I said. And I have to earn it back every single moment that I'm on the show.' In June, Owens said he told producers his preferred age range is '45 to 60, just being honest.' He also told them that 'if they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them. This is not 'The Silver Bachelor,' this is 'The Golden Bachelor.'' 8 Mel Owens at 2025 Disney Upfront. Jackie Brown / Owens revealed that the producers then told him, ''You can't use the word cut.' I go, 'Well, that's an NFL term.'' His comments were quickly faced with backlash. 'He doesn't seem like the type for 'in sickness and in health,'' one fan wrote on X, while a second chimed in: 'Awful. I won't watch with a jerk in the lead.' A third social media user stated, 'doesn't sound like much of a mystery as to why he's still a bachelor. Anyone who chooses to go on that show deserves whatever disaster they get.' Owens was married to Fabiana Owens from 2002 to 2020, and the exes share sons Lucas (born in 2005) and Andre (born in 2007), according to Us Weekly. The 'Golden Bachelor' premieres on Wednesday, September 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
