US Senate approves divisive Trump spending bill The Republican-led US Senate approved President Donald Trump's mammoth domestic policy bill on Tuesday by the narrowest of margins, despite misgivings over delivering deep welfare cuts and another $3 trillion in national debt
Republican leaders had struggled to corral support during a record 24-hour "vote-a-rama" amendment session on the Senate floor, as Democrats offered dozens of challenges to the most divisive aspects of the package
Senate Majority Leader John Thune was able to turn around two moderates considering siding with Democrats, to deliver a 50-50 vote, with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie

Delhi: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey alleges Congress took foreign funds, claims India was 'sold' to KGB and CIA before 2014
Delhi: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said on Tuesday, "The diaries of CIA and Mitrokhin mention that under the leadership of the late Congress leader HKL Bhagat, more than 150 Congress MPs were funded by Soviet Russia. It also mentions that a total of 16,000 news articles were published by Russia, according to their wish... It also mentions that Congress candidate Subhadra Joshi took Rs 5 lakh from the German government from 1977-80 in the name of elections, and after that, she became the president of the Indo-German Forum. If you look at it, it seemed that our country was sold to Soviet Russia under the leadership of Gandhi family. What I said today is that on 10 May 1979, there was a discussion in Rajya Sabha, in the book written by the US Ambassador Moynihan mentions that he gave money to Indira Gandhi twice, there was a full debate on this in Rajya Sabha and I have mentioned the phone conversation between Nixon and Kissinger, in which they are talking about giving money, how Congress can be managed, how the government can be managed. All these things are alarming...When Manmohan Singh's government was formed in 2004, R.A.W. Joint Director Rabinder Singh was sent away and till date his whereabouts are not known... All this shows that till 2014, leave aside only 5-6 years of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's term, this government was either run by KGB or CIA and Congress and the entire Gandhi family were puppets of these two agencies and this was unfortunate for the country..."

US brings charges in North Korean remote worker scheme that officials say funds weapons program
The Justice Department announced criminal charges Monday in a scheme by North Korea to fund its weapons program through the salaries of remote information technology workers employed unwittingly by U.S. companies.
The charges arose from what law enforcement officials described as a nationwide operation that also resulted in the seizure of financial accounts, websites and laptops that were used to carry out the fraud.
Separate cases in Georgia and Massachusetts represent the latest Justice Department effort to confront a persistent threat that officials say generates enormous revenue for the North Korean government and in some cases affords workers access to sensitive and proprietary data from the American corporations that hire them.
The scheme involved thousands of workers who, armed with stolen or fake identities, were dispatched by the North Korean government to find work as remote IT employees at American companies, including Fortune 500 corporations. The companies were duped into believing that the workers they hired were based in the U.S. when many were actually stationed in North Korea or China, and the wages the victimized companies paid were transferred into accounts controlled by co-conspirators affiliated with North Korea, prosecutors say.
Senate votes on amendments to Trump's big bill ahead of July 4 deadline
Possible changes to President Donald Trump's big bill of tax breaks and spending cuts are being considered in what's called a vote-a-rama, though most of the amendments are expected to fail.
After a weekend of setbacks, the Senate is rushing Monday to move ahead with the bill despite a series of challenges.
The hours ahead will be pivotal for the Republicans, who have control of Congress and are racing against Trump's self-imposed July 4 deadline. The 940-page ' One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' as it is now formally titled, has consumed Congress as its shared priority with the president, with no room politically to fail, even as not all Republicans are on board.

Himachal Pradesh: Due to very heavy rainfall in the region, the Beas River is experiencing severe flooding.
Red alert in Himachal Pradesh as monsoon rains spark severe flood warning
Heavy rain has pushed the Beas River into severe flooding. Himachal Pradesh woke up to blocked roads, power cuts and broken pipelines as the monsoon tightened its grip.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) raised a red alert for the state. The rain hasn't paused, crippling daily life and cutting people off from basic services.
Massive disruptions across districts
The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) counted 259 roads blocked and 614 transformers knocked out. Water supply lines took a big hit too — 130 schemes stopped flowing overnight.
'The monsoon is intensifying its grip, and the impact is visible across multiple districts. Roads, power lines, and water systems are all severely affected,' said an official from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). He added that field teams are trying day and night to fix what's broken.
Mandi district is the worst affected. It alone reported 139 roads blocked and 314 power transformers damaged — most of them in Gohar, Mandi II and J Nagar.
A landslide at Jagatkhana in Bilaspur choked the highway, forcing traffic into a single lane. Floodwater at Pandoh in Mandi only made matters worse.
Kullu, Sirmaur and Lahaul also reeling
Sirmaur district counted 92 water schemes hit, including 19 in Nohradhar. Kullu has 20 roads blocked and 47 water schemes down in Kullu, Largi and Anni sub-divisions. Spiti Valley in Lahaul and Spiti saw 139 transformers fail in one blow.
An official from the Revenue and Disaster Management Department said, 'Our top priority is restoring access and utilities in the worst-hit areas like Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kullu. Repair teams are being deployed with urgency.'
Landslides trigger highway chaos
On Monday, landslides and shooting stones shut down the Chandigarh-Manali highway for hours. Traffic was halted near Thalout, Larji and 9 Mile in Mandi. Commuters had no choice but to crawl along link roads or wait for bulldozers to clear debris.
At Thalout, falling rocks blocked the road by the tunnel exit for two hours. A local official explained, 'The highway got blocked near 9 Mile late Sunday night due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall. By the time the landslide debris was cleared in the morning hours, there were more landslides and incidents of shooting stones; that's why it took time to restore the traffic movement.'
Police warned of more falling stones near 4 Mile, 7 Mile and Dwara — known danger spots when the hills are soaked.

Elon Musk's ‘America Party' idea gets 40% backing in new poll

Around 40% of Americans say they might support a new political party created by Elon Musk, according to a new poll. The survey by Quantus Insights found 14% would be "very likely" and 26% "somewhat likely" to back Musk's proposed 'America Party'. Musk announced this idea during a fight with former ally Donald Trump over a huge government spending bill. He called Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" – which adds $3.3 trillion to the U.S. debt – 'insane'. Musk argues America needs an alternative to the two major parties, which he claims actually work together as a "uniparty" against regular people's interests. The poll shows clear splits in who likes Musk's idea. Republican men are most interested – 57% said they'd likely support the America Party. Independent men followed at 47%. But Democrats largely dislike the plan, with just 7% of Democratic men saying they'd strongly back it. The survey of 1,000 voters also found deep unhappiness with both main parties: 59% of independents said neither Republicans nor Democrats represent American values well. Experts note this openness to a third party isn't really about Musk himself – it reflects widespread frustration with the current political system. Musk's feud with Trump exploded after the spending bill passed Congress last week. The Tesla CEO had served in Trump's government but quit in May. After Musk criticized the bill, Trump warned he might cancel government contracts for Musk's companies and even suggested deporting him (Musk was born in South Africa). Trump ally Steve Bannon attacked Musk as a "foreigner" trying to split conservative voters. Meanwhile, Musk's poll on X about starting the party got over 1.25 million votes, with 65% saying 'yes'. Even with his $361 billion fortune, experts say Musk would struggle to create a real national party. Each state has different rules for new parties to get on ballots – California alone requires 75,000 registered members or 1.1 million signatures! Election lawyer Brett Kappel explained: 'The state laws... make it as difficult as possible for a third political party'. Campaign funding laws also limit individual donations to parties to just $10,000 per state yearly.

Elon Musk details plans for new ‘America Party' to punish Trump allies over ‘big, beautiful' bill

Elon Musk has shared more details about his plans for a new political party, one that could strategically target a handful of US House and Senate races to become a swing bloc in Congress, according to a series of posts he made on Friday. He had earlier threatened to launch a new party if Trump's pet policy 'One, Big, Beautiful Bill' passed the Senate. That policy plan became reality on July 4 as Trump signed it into a law. 'One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,' Musk wrote on X, the platform he owns. 'Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring they serve the true will of the people.' Musk didn't name specific seats but suggested the goal would be to control leverage, not dominate. He also posted a poll asking followers whether he should move ahead with creating the 'America Party' that will intend to challenge both Republicans and Democrats. More than 65 per cent of the 1.25 million respondents said 'yes.' One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts. Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 4, 2025 'Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!' Musk added. The idea gained momentum as Musk escalated his public rift with Donald Trump over the president's newly signed spending bill, which passed the House by just four votes and required Vice-President JD Vance to break a 50-50 tie in the Senate. Musk, who contributed $277 million to Trump's 2024 campaign, had been appointed to lead the 'Department of Government Efficiency' (DOGE) at the start of Trump's second term. The department oversaw aggressive cuts to federal agencies, claiming $190 billion in savings, though a watchdog group as reported by The Guardian, estimated the disruption may have cost taxpayers $135 billion. Musk stepped down from DOGE at the end of May, around the same time he became highly critical of Trump's budget plan, which would raise the national debt by $3.3 trillion. He threatened to fund primary challengers against lawmakers who voted for the bill and revive plans for a third party if it passed. After the bill's narrow passage, Trump fired back, warning Musk that open opposition could backfire. The president reportedly threatened to cancel government contracts for Musk's companies and even floated the idea of revoking his US citizenship, a move with no legal basis. 'Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head to South Africa,' Trump wrote on Truth Social, later adding: 'We might have to put Doge on Elon. Doge is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible?'

India second most satisfying democracy for citizens: Pew Research

New Delhi: India, the world's largest democracy, ranks second among nations as 74 per cent of people here feel satisfied about the working of the system of representative governance, according to Pew Research Centre (PRC) in a survey available on Saturday. Citing India as a shining example at the time of a gloomy public outlook towards democracy in 12-high income nations, the 'Spring 2025 Global Attitudes Survey' of PRC said that the nation of over 99 crore voters is ranked just behind Sweden (75 per cent) in the survey covering 23 countries. The survey's findings also show that economic perceptions are an important factor behind people feeling satisfied with the functioning of democracy in their countries. 'Countries where large shares of the public say the economy is in good shape also tend to have large shares who are satisfied with their democracy,' said PRC, putting India in the coveted club of five nations where public perception about good functioning democracy and economy is high. India, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands and Sweden are examples of countries where people are relatively happy with both their democracy and their economy, said PRC. In Indonesia, 66 per cent of the population is satisfied with democracy. In Mexico, 51per cent of the citizens are satisfied with democracy while in the Netherlands the figure stands at 60 per cent. Sharing other findings, the PRC said that. since 2024. satisfaction with democracy has decreased in five countries (Israel, Japan, Kenya, Poland and South Korea) and increased in five others (Canada, Germany, South Africa, the UK and the US). Across all 23 countries surveyed, a median of 58 per cent of adults are dissatisfied with how their democracy is working, while 42 per cent are satisfied, said the survey. In 12 high-income countries – Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the US – a median of 64 per cent of adults say they are dissatisfied with the way their democracy is working, while a median of 35 per cent are satisfied. Four of the countries where satisfaction grew held national elections between our 2024 and 2025 surveys. In each one, views changed among partisan groups in ways that reflect election results: In general, supporters of a party that won an election, or sometimes a party that exceeded expectations in an election, became happier with the state of democracy. In the United Kingdom, the Labour Party achieved a majority in Parliament, ending 14 years of Conservative Party rule. Satisfaction with democracy rose significantly among Labour supporters, while it is basically unchanged among Conservatives, said PRC. In the US, Republicans maintained their majority in the House of Representatives while also gaining a Senate majority and winning the presidency. Since PRC's 2024 survey, Republicans' satisfaction with democracy has increased significantly, while Democrats' satisfaction dropped significantly, it said.
