Mayele, Adel star as Pyramids FC thrash FAR Rabat in CAF Champions League quarters - Egyptian Football

Al-Ahram Weekly01-04-2025

Two braces from Congolese striker Fiston Mayele and skilled winger Ibrahim Adel secured a vital 4-1 win for Pyramids FC over Morocco's FAR Rabat in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday, giving the Egyptian outfit a significant stride toward securing a semi-final berth.
Mayele netted both of his goals in the opening 15 minutes, with Adel contributing the third in the 38th minute before adding a second in the 67th minute to extend the lead, while FAR Rabat managed a consolation goal through Abdelfattah Hadraf, who fired in a left-footed finish in the final minute of the first half.
Head coach Krunoslav Jurcic deployed an attacking lineup that saw Mostafa Fathy, Ibrahim Adel, and Fiston Mayele leading the line, with Blati Toure and Ramadan Sobhi providing support from midfield.
The Sky Blues relentlessly pressed forward, aiming for a comfortable lead heading into the return leg.
Moments after kickoff, forward Mostafa Fathy capitalized on a defensive error by Larbi Naji, intercepting the ball and delivering a precise cross to set up Mayele, who slotted the ball home with a close-range right-footed shot.
Ten minutes later, Mayele doubled the lead following a brilliant assist from Adel, who had brilliantly supplied from the right flank.
Despite relying on a well-organized defense, FAR Rabat's counterattacks were thwarted by a lack of composure in the final third.
In the 38th minute, Ibrahim Adel received a well-placed cross from Ramadan Sobhi on the left side and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot into the center of the net, bringing the score to 3-0.
However, the Moroccan side pulled a goal back just before halftime when Hadraf connected with Youssef El-Fahli's cross, sending a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner, ending the first half at 3-1.
In the second half, Pyramids FC continued their relentless pursuit of goals, leading to a fourth from star winger Ibrahim Adel.
The 23-year-old Egyptian international collected a well-placed cross from Ivorian midfielder Blati Toure on the left flank and buried a close-range right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.
FAR Rabat attempted to reduce the deficit but failed to make an impact as Pyramids FC maintained control of the game.
The return leg is scheduled for 8 April at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, with the winner advancing to face either MC Alger or Orlando Pirates in the semifinals.

Carvajal Hopes to Make Return from Injury in 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Rana Atef Real Madrid star and Spain international Dani Carvajal hopes to make his comeback from the devastating knee injury he sustained last October. Carvajal told FIFA website: 'I have been sidelined for a long time, and from the very beginning we saw it as a challenge—to try to be in optimal condition for this World Cup. And the truth is that we are doing very well. Having that on the horizon also increases the excitement of coming to train every day, knowing that you can contribute to the team in that tournament." Carvajal whose position is right-back, would be replaced by the latest signing, Trent Alexander-Arnold who joined the team on a free transfer. The Spanish international has yet to complete a full training session with the squad, and rushing back at this stage would be risky under any circumstance. Carvajal believes he'll be able to comeback in the upcoming tournament. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Moroccan grit meets European might: Wydad's Club World Cup Showdown

· Group of death: Tough draw pits Wydad against global heavyweights · Tactical discipline the key to causing upsets · Star players must shine on the global stage Wydad Casablanca are back on the global stage, looking to channel the fire that propelled them to TotalEnergies CAF Champions League glory in 2021/22. But the Moroccan titans face a monumental task at this year's FIFA Club World Cup, having landed in what many are calling the 'Group of Death.' Awaiting them are former English champions Manchester City, Italian giants Juventus, and UAE powerhouse Al Ain — a daunting trio by any measure. Wydad's domestic form hasn't been quite as inspiring, finishing third in the Moroccan Botola Pro 1 this season. Despite a strong continental pedigree, their recent inconsistencies have raised questions about their readiness for such elite competition. Still, in tournament football, the unpredictable often becomes reality — and head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem is counting on that very unpredictability. Much will depend on individual brilliance. Mohamed Rayhi, Wydad's top scorer with 11 goals this season, will be their primary threat from the left wing. Up front, Cassius Mailula's sharp finishing — despite just five goals so far — offers another potential spark. In the engine room, midfielders Oussama Zemraoui and Ismail Moutaraji will need to dictate tempo, win duels, and transition play swiftly under pressure. Defensively, Wydad must be near perfect. One lapse could spell disaster against teams of such calibre. But history has shown that organization, belief, and timely goals can carry underdogs far — and Wydad will be hoping to write a chapter of their own. While few expect them to advance past this brutal group, Wydad Casablanca are no strangers to adversity. If they can frustrate their opponents, capitalize on limited opportunities, and draw strength from their passionate supporters, a shock result or two is not out of the question. This Club World Cup will test Wydad like never before. But with grit and discipline, Morocco's finest could yet turn the tide against European heavyweights.
