Seedings not assigned arbitrarily
Published on: Sat, May 24, 2025
By: GL Oh Text Size: Charles said they appreciate the concern raised regarding tournament fairness and welcome any constructive feedback. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Squash Association (SSA) has denied any wrongdoing related to the assignment of seedings in any of the tournaments sanctioned by them. This followed claims by an ex-Sukma athlete published in the Daily Express forum on May 4 that players were incorrectly seeded despite their strong track records and current form in recent squash events and called for transparency. In an official statement released on Thursday, SSA president Datuk Charles O Pang said they appreciate the concern raised regarding tournament fairness and welcome any constructive feedback. 'We would like to clarify that player seeding in SSA sanctioned tournaments has always been conducted professionally based on verified data, not arbitrarily as implied. 'It is also important to note that squash tournaments in the State not organised by Sabah Squash Association fall outside our jurisdiction, and therefore we do not have authority over the ranking or seeding processes in such events,' he said. According to him, the four criteria applied in the seeding process are based on [1] national rankings - the primary basis is the latest official ranking issued by the Squash Racquet Association of Malaysia (SRAM), [2] recent tournament performance (Sabah Closed) - for local players, performance in annual Sabah Closed tournament is a key indicator, especially for those not yet ranked nationally, [3] school-level achievements (MSSS and MSSD) - results from Majlis Sukan Sekolah Sabah (MSSS) and Majlis Sukan Sekolah Daerah (MSSD) to assess consistency and competitiveness, [4] internal performance records - from past tournaments to support fair and consistent evaluations, especially when national rankings are unavailable or outdated.
Advertisement 'We are firmly committed to transparency and continuous improvement. While our seeding system is grounded in structured and objective criteria, we recognise the need for ongoing refinement. 'As part of this effort, we are actively exploring ways to make our seeding process more visible and accessible to the public, and we welcome constructive engagement from athletes, parents, and coaches alike. 'Therefore, should any oversight occur, we are open to reviewing individual cases upon formal feedback or appeal, as fairness and development remain our utmost priorities. 'We remain committed to supporting our players at all levels and ensuring that tournaments are conducted with integrity, professionalism and transparency,' he stressed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Charlayne poses with her trophy. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Charlayne Chong emerged victorious in the women's category at the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Championship, held at the Kelantan Golf and Country Club from July 26–28. The 23-year-old golfer, who hails from Kota Kinabalu and is currently a student at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) National Golf Academy, posted a three-day total of 225 to clinch the title. She edged out Amberly Zaira Zamri, who finished second with a score of 227, while Nur Maisara Sa'ad settled for third with 233. Reflecting on her win, Charlayne credited her mental resilience as a crucial factor in navigating the demanding course. 'The course was decent, though managing it definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone,' she said. 'One key takeaway I learned this week is the importance of internal control over my thoughts, emotions, and everything that fuels unnecessary stress and doubt.' Despite the win, Charlayne acknowledged that there is still room for improvement, particularly in strengthening her mental game. 'I know there's still a lot more work to be done, especially in terms of improving my mental strength. But overall, it was a great experience to compete here,' she added. She also expressed her gratitude to the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) for the opportunity to compete, as well as to the UUM National Golf Academy and sponsors Leonian Malaysia, Callaway Golf Malaysia, and Golf Partner Malaysia for their continued support. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ex-NBA star Gilbert Arenas arrested for illegal poker games in LA
FORMER NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas was arrested on Wednesday alongside five others for allegedly hosting illegal high-stakes poker games at his mansion in Los Angeles. Federal prosecutors revealed that the 43-year-old ex-Washington Wizards player rented his Encino property to run the underground gambling operation between September 2021 and July 2022. According to the indictment, the gatherings included young women who were tipped to serve drinks, provide massages, and offer companionship to players. Arenas faces charges of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, operating an illegal gambling business, and making false statements to federal investigators. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment and was released on a $50,000 bond. A trial date has been set for September 23. Among those arrested was 49-year-old Yevgeni Gershman, described as a suspected organized crime figure from Israel. The indictment alleges that Arenas' associate, Arthur Kats, helped organize the games by recruiting participants and collecting rent. The illegal 'Pot Limit Omaha' poker games reportedly charged players a 'rake,' either as a percentage of the pot or a fee per hand. Servers were allegedly required to share tips with the organizers, who also provided chefs, valets, and armed guards. Text messages between Arenas and Kats were included in the indictment, with one showing a poker table labeled 'ARENAS POKER CLUB' and an image of a basketball player wearing an Arenas jersey. If convicted, the defendants could face up to five years in federal prison per charge. Arenas, a three-time NBA All-Star, last played in the league in 2012 before joining China's Shanghai Sharks. His career was marred by controversy, including a 2009 incident where he and teammate Javaris Crittenton brought guns into the locker room following a dispute over a card game. Arenas later pleaded guilty to felony gun possession and was suspended for 50 games. - AFP

World Bicycle Day on MPS calendar
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: Wilson, Frankie, Fui Fui and others during the programme. SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) plans to include the World Bicycle Day Ride as part of its official annual calendar to promote inclusivity and a sustainable lifestyle. Its President Walter Kenson said cycling is a unifying activity that transcends age, background and ability. It is open to everyone, including local leaders and both state and federal civil servants in the District. 'This is the spirit we want to cultivate in Sandakan. Organising casual cycling events such as this is in line with MPS's aspiration to develop the District into an eco-friendly, healthy and sustainable city. 'Cycling is more than just a leisure activity. It is a lifestyle that benefits both physical and mental health, while also helping to reduce pollution and urban traffic congestion,' he said. Walter believes that such programmes can strengthen community ties, raise awareness on green mobility, and encourage a culture of active living among Sandakan residents. He said this when officiating the District-level World Bicycle Day 2025 programme at the Piazza, Harbour Mall on Saturday. His speech was delivered by his deputy, Wilson Thomas. Also present were Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, MPS Secretary and Jetama Water Sdn Bhd Chairman Liau Fui Fui, and Sandakan Cycling Club (SCC) President Mohd Soffian Eting. MPS is among the first local authorities in Sabah to respond to the call and take the lead in initiating a World Bicycle Day ride in collaboration with Sandakan's cycling community. This year's event was held in partnership with SCC and several other agencies. Speaking to the media, Soffian welcomed the proposal to make the event a fixed item in MPS's annual calendar, saying the club is always ready to collaborate with the council on future programmes. 'Such events also help promote tourism in Sandakan through sports and recreation,' he said. A total of 180 participants from Sandakan, Felda Sahabat Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid took part in the 12km ride. Special recognition was given during the event to the oldest participant (64 years old), the youngest (12), and a participant in the disabled category. Lucky draw prizes were also given out. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
