Will pad up and bat if captain tells me to: Kanhaiya Kumar on contesting Bihar polls
Congress leader
Kanhaiya Kumar
on Friday said that he will contest the upcoming
Bihar Assembly polls
if the party tells him to.
Using a cricketing analogy, Kumar said that just like batting, bowling, and fielding are responsibilities that have to be fulfilled on the cricket field, fighting polls is also a responsibility in politics.
"To fight polls, to make others fight polls and campaign, all are responsibilities that the party allots. If the party tells me to contest the polls then I will fight the elections also. Earlier also, when I contested the polls, it was on the orders of the party," he told PTI in an interview when asked whether he will contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls slated later this year.
"If the captain tells me to sit outside and deliver drinks for those at the crease, I will do that. And if the captain tells me to, I will also pad up and bat," Kumar said on the possibility of him contesting assembly polls.
On the Congress projecting him as a prominent face in Bihar, Kumar said the party has given him a responsibility like it does to its lakhs of workers. It is like in a team where different people have a separate role, he added.
Live Events
"Earlier, (MS) Dhoni was the wicketkeeper. Now (Rishabh) Pant is there," he said, drawing a cricketing parallel.
Asserting that the party functions with collective effort, Kumar said the decision to contest polls should also be collective.
"I have been a strong votary of the principle that fighting an election is a collective decision. Like other responsibilities, fighting polls is also a responsibility. Like batting, bowling, and fielding are all responsibilities that have to be fulfilled, fighting polls is also a responsibility," he told PTI.
Kumar, a former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union, had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls twice. He first contested general elections on a CPI ticket from Bihar's Begusarai in 2019 and then as a Congress nominee from Northeast Delhi in 2024.
On the
Election Commission
asking for place of birth certificates starting with Bihar polls, Kumar said the Congress has asked the poll panel to rectify the anomalies in the voters list.
"Today, if you raise questions on EC, they are answered by the BJP. You raise questions on ED, and answers are given by the BJP. You raise questions on the
CBI
and the
Income Tax
Department, answers are given by the BJP. I would like to remind you that it was the BJP that raised the questions over EVMs... So, if you (the BJP) raises questions it is ok but if we do the same, it is wrong," he said.
"First you were saying there is no error. Now you are starting this process from Bihar. So, you are accepting that there is a mistake. And if there is a mistake, your focus should be on rectifying that and not harassing people. A Process should not become a punishment and the issues that have been raised should be rectified honestly," Kumar said.

Karnataka HC quashes hate speech cases against Bommai
Bengaluru, June 27 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today quashed two criminal cases filed against former Chief Minister and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai, who was facing charges of promoting enmity between religious groups over remarks made during a political rally against the Waqf Board. The allegations stemmed from a protest rally held by the BJP in November 2024, where Bommai had sharply criticised the Congress-led State government and the Waqf Board. He was reported to have said, "If a stone is thrown in Savanur, wherever it falls, it is Waqf land." The comment was perceived as inflammatory and led to charges under Section 196(1)(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Challenging the FIRs, Bommai moved the High Court seeking quashing of the cases, terming them "politically motivated and legally untenable." Justice S.R. Krishna Kumar, who presided over the matter, ruled in Bommai's favour. 'In light of the vague, bald, omnibus, laconic allegations made in the impugned complaint, coupled with the principles stated by the apex court and this court, the continuation of the proceedings would amount to an abuse of process of law,' the judge said in a strongly-worded order. The Court made it clear that the relief granted would apply solely to Bommai and not to other co-accused in the case, if any. Bommai was represented by Senior Advocate Prabhuling K. Navadgi, with Advocate Shivaparasad Shantanagoudar filing the petitions on his behalf. The verdict is expected to bring significant political relief to the former CM, who has been a vocal critic of what the BJP has called 'discriminatory land policies' allegedly favouring minority institutions under the current government. Etawah Kathavachak case: PDA stands with every victim, assures Akhilesh
In an oblique reference to the Etawah protest on Friday, but without naming an incident, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of bringing people from neighbouring states and misusing the 'surname' of their own planted people to create a divide in society. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav (HT File Photo) The SP chief also claimed that the entire PDA society was standing with every victim of the 'Etawah Kathavachak PDA Insult Case'. Speaking to the media at a private function in Lucknow on Friday, the SP chief said, 'Each and every child knows the truth of the 'Ghuspaithia (infiltrator) politics' that BJP is doing in the state by bringing people from neighbouring states and misusing the surname of its own 'planted people'. People of UP will not be divided by the mistakes of some negative people, but will become even stronger.' Taking a dig at UP and central governments, the SP chief said, 'Today is there not even one BJP member in UP on whom the people of Delhi can trust? Perhaps this is the case, that is why they are bringing people from outside and hatching a new conspiracy. The truth is that this is a challenge for the people of Lucknow that people are repeatedly coming in from across the border of UP to destabilise UP and are going back comfortably after disturbing the peace of the state. Will the BJP government of UP now open the borders of its state for any anarchist element? If this is so, then the BJP government of UP should openly declare it or send its police to arrest those anarchist elements.' 'If this does not happen, then tomorrow more such people will come and defy the BJP government of UP and the people of UP will accept that the BJP government has become an ineffective government in UP, it has neither any leadership nor any commitment to the law and order of UP or even peace,' said Akhilesh. Speaking on the Etawah incident, he said, 'A few dominant people did not even spare the artiste. By snatching his dholak and accusing him, such negative people have lost the sympathy of their own society. The true worshippers of our country's culture are always kind and full of compassion, those who do this are un-Indian and inhuman people who are rejected on human standards. Today the entire PDA society is raising its voice with every victim of the 'Etawah Kathavachan PDA Insult Case'. 'PDA' is a new echo of the new drum against oppression.' 'PDA is a collective, social, community declaration of new consciousness and unity among the traditionally neglected and oppressed people who have suffered the triple curse of 'pain, sorrow and humiliation'. PDA is not a call for revenge but for change in thinking. PDA is a determined declaration of positive-progressive 'rule of social justice' that removes inequality and ensures equality, parity, dignity and prestige,' said the SP chief.
