Karnataka HC quashes hate speech cases against Bommai

Bengaluru, June 27 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today quashed two criminal cases filed against former Chief Minister and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai, who was facing charges of promoting enmity between religious groups over remarks made during a political rally against the Waqf Board.
The allegations stemmed from a protest rally held by the BJP in November 2024, where Bommai had sharply criticised the Congress-led State government and the Waqf Board. He was reported to have said, "If a stone is thrown in Savanur, wherever it falls, it is Waqf land." The comment was perceived as inflammatory and led to charges under Section 196(1)(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Challenging the FIRs, Bommai moved the High Court seeking quashing of the cases, terming them "politically motivated and legally untenable."
Justice S.R. Krishna Kumar, who presided over the matter, ruled in Bommai's favour. 'In light of the vague, bald, omnibus, laconic allegations made in the impugned complaint, coupled with the principles stated by the apex court and this court, the continuation of the proceedings would amount to an abuse of process of law,' the judge said in a strongly-worded order.
The Court made it clear that the relief granted would apply solely to Bommai and not to other co-accused in the case, if any.
Bommai was represented by Senior Advocate Prabhuling K. Navadgi, with Advocate Shivaparasad Shantanagoudar filing the petitions on his behalf.
The verdict is expected to bring significant political relief to the former CM, who has been a vocal critic of what the BJP has called 'discriminatory land policies' allegedly favouring minority institutions under the current government.

BJP National President Announcement Likely Soon, But Uttar Pradesh Chief To Be Finalised First

June has largely been dedicated to Modi government events marking one year of its third term and 11 years of 'seva'. However, organisational activity has now picked up pace After a brief lull due to the Pakistan-backed terror attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, the Bharatiya Janata Party has resumed focus on pending organisational elections. Key among these is the appointment of the party's national president, expected soon, but not before Uttar Pradesh gets its new state unit chief. Given Uttar Pradesh's political significance and the upcoming state elections in two years, the BJP is prioritising the appointment of a new president there, setting the tone for the national leadership transition. Other major states are also in focus. Gujarat, home to both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah, is due for a leadership change. Currently, CR Patil holds the post but he now serves as a union cabinet minister. Madhya Pradesh—considered the BJP's oldest organisational stronghold—also awaits a new state president, as BD Sharma's term has ended. June has largely been dedicated to Modi government events marking one year of its third term and 11 years of 'seva". However, organisational activity has now picked up pace. On Friday, the BJP appointed central observers for organisational elections in three key states. In Maharashtra, union minister Kiren Rijiju will oversee proceedings. Ravindra Chavan, currently working president after Chandrakant Patil joined the state cabinet, is expected to take full charge. In Uttarakhand, union minister Harsh Malhotra has been tasked with finalising the new state president. In West Bengal, former union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has been assigned as current state president Sukanta Majumdar, now also a union minister, may be replaced. With West Bengal headed to polls next year, there is speculation that the BJP may appoint a woman as state president. Agnimitra Paul and former MP Locket Chatterjee are seen as strong contenders. Organisational elections in other states are being scheduled. Tripura elections will be held on June 29, with former union minister Pratima Bhowmik in contention. Andhra Pradesh elections are set for July 1, as current president D Purandeswari remains in contention along with BJP Lok Sabha MP CM Ramesh. Sources have said that in Telangana, a new state president is likely to be announced in the coming week. In Karnataka, sources suggest that BY Vijayendra—son of veteran leader BS Yediyurappa and current state president—may continue for another term, especially given the political instability facing the Congress government in the state. Out of 36 states and union territories, the BJP has successfully concluded elections in 14. As per party norms, 51% of state units must complete their organisational polls before the national president is elected. Incumbent national president JP Nadda, appointed in January 2020, has already completed his full term. He was granted extensions to lead the party through key events, including the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP is now expected to move swiftly on completing the remaining state-level appointments before naming its next national president. First Published: June 27, 2025, 19:14 IST

This funding would help President Donald Trump carry out his campaign promise of deporting millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United immigration plans have long been a core part of his agenda. The issue was central to his 2024 presidential campaign and continues to be his strongest area of support. According to a recent NBC News poll, 51% of US adults approve of how he handles immigration, while 49% without completing a border wall, illegal crossings have fallen. Trump and his team highlight this decline as a success of their broader enforcement Supreme Court recently made a ruling that allows the Trump administration to continue challenging the 14th Amendment's birthright citizenship guarantees. This ruling, though limited in scope, supports Trump's push for stricter immigration plan requires major increases in immigration personnel. A House bill includes $8 billion over five years to add 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) employees. This would grow ICE's staff by nearly 50%.An additional $858 million is planned for bonuses to help hire and retain these agents. Border Protection could receive $2 billion more for bonuses, with up to $30,000 per new turnover has made immigration enforcement more difficult. Former ICE official Chris Musto said many agents have left their posts. He added that investigators trained for complex cases are now being redirected to routine immigration administration has also reassigned staff from other federal departments to focus on immigration cities like Los Angeles, local resistance to Trump's policies has led to the deployment of National Guard troops. Federal agents have also received support from US Marines to ensure enforcement activities say the result of new funding and staffing will lead to more public immigration raids and a visible federal presence in the administration highlights arrests of people with criminal records, most enforcement actions have targeted those without any criminal Homan, Trump's border policy advisor, says more agents mean more criminals will be removed from the streets. However, recent data shows most ICE arrests involve House staff have reportedly pressured ICE leaders to increase daily arrests. In May, top advisor Stephen Miller demanded 3,000 detentions per urgency has led to confusion about which undocumented immigrants should be targeted. Trump initially said some workers in industries like farming and hospitality would be exempt, but that position later show divided views. Americans support targeting violent offenders but oppose workplace raids, ending asylum protections and expanding detention in Congress have largely opposed Trump's plan. Most Republicans support it, but some, like Senator Rand Paul, have called for reduced draft Senate bill includes less funding than the House version. However, after internal GOP discussions, the Senate plan is expected to match the House's.A recent report showed that 71% of ICE arrests and 67% of detainees had no criminal records. Nearly half of the 55,000 people in ICE detention in late June had no convictions or pending say Trump's enforcement efforts have shifted from targeting serious criminals to focusing on nonviolent plan includes hiring thousands of new ICE agents, expanding detention facilities, and conducting wide-scale immigration enforcement, including detaining undocumented immigrants without criminal show Americans support deporting violent offenders but oppose workplace raids, expanded detention, and removal of asylum protections. Views on the plan vary by political affiliation.

As CM, Uddhav accepted report saying Hindi compulsory, says Fadnavis

MUMBAI: The BJP rushed to the defence of the state government over its decision to introduce Hindi as an optional language for Classes 1 to 5 after the Thackeray cousins announced their decision to hold a joint morcha against "imposition" of Hindi in state schools. CM Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said Marathi is compulsory, Hindi is optional. "Basically, students can learn any Indian language. We have accepted the three-language policy. When NE was introduced, the Uddhav Thackeray govt was in office. An 18-member committee was set up to study the policy, and in 2021 the Thackeray govt accepted it and further action was taken on it. In this report, it was clearly mentioned that along with Marathi, Hindi and English be made compulsory. Will you consider Mashelkar, Bhalchandra Mungekar, Sukhdev Thorat, who submitted this report, anti-Maharashtra? We allowed all languages," he said.
