Man Utd chief claims club can win Premier League in three years as plan revealed
Manchester United endured a woeful season under Ruben Amorim but there is still belief behind the scenes that the former Sporting Lisbon head coach can restore the club to their former glory
Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada claims the Red Devils can win the Premier League by 2028, having given his backing to Ruben Amorim. United have endured a rotten few years recently, which culminated in their worst-ever Premier League season last term.
They slumped to 15th under Amorim after losing 18 of their league games. United also failed to earn a spot back in the Champions League having lost out to Premier League rivals Tottenham in the Europa League final.
Despite their dismal campaign still being fresh in the mind, Berrada is still convinced that United can challenge for the Premier League crown over the coming seasons. Asked if the club are capable of winning the title, he replied: 'Of course.
'We've just finished 15th and it seems like an impossible task. But why not aim for it? Why not do everything in our power?
'I firmly believe that we can do it. We have two or three summer windows to build a team to start competing to win the Premier League and if we can achieve it before then, we'll all be happy — and so nobody's saying that we don't want to win it until then.'
The closest United have come to winning the league since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson came in 2018 and 2021 as they finished second to local rivals Manchester City under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer respectively. And Berrada still has faith that Amorim could be the man to end that long wait despite claims last season that he could have been jettisoned.
'We saw it as an investment for the following seasons, because we were going to give time to Ruben to get to know the squad, the club, the Premier League,' Berrada added.
'So by the time that we got to now, we'll have had all the discussions about what does the squad need, the two-to-three-year plan to get to a squad that's capable of winning the Premier League.
'We have a very clear roadmap of how we're going to get there. Had Ruben started on July 1, 2025, we wouldn't have been able to have all that knowledge, right? And that's what I feel these seven or eight months that he's had. He's suffered in the Premier League, and the team has suffered. That's why I feel that it's really going to help us in the future.'
United have already been busy in the transfer market as they attempt to recover from their woeful campaign. The Red Devils activated a £62.5m release clause in Matheus Cunha's Wolves deal to sign him.
They also remain keen on a deal for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo but are facing competition from Spurs. United also want a new striker this summer with Viktor Gyokeres a long-term target.

BREAKING NEWS Sacked Premier League referee David Coote is charged by the FA after X-rated rant that saw him brand Jurgen Klopp a 'German ****'
Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the FA over his rant aimed at Jurgen Klopp. Coote was sacked in December after a video emerged of him bashing former Liverpool boss Klopp, and a separate clip appeared to show him snorting a white powder in a hotel room while he was officiating at last summer's Euros. The astonishing initial video surrounding Klopp, which went viral on social media, appeared to show Coote looking worse for wear as he delivered an explicit rant about the Merseyside club. 'Liverpool were s***,' said the man alleged to be Coote in the video. '(Klopp is a) ****, absolute ****. Aside from having a right pop at me when I was refereeing them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying and then had a right f***ing pop of me. 'I have no interest in speaking to someone who is f***ing arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. (James) Milner is all right, I get on with him. You can see me there with a 'mask' on. But, my god, German ****, f*** me.' In a second video, he added: 'Just to be clear, that f***ing last video cannot go anywhere, seriously.' The FA have now revealed that Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3. — FA Spokesperson (@FAspokesperson) June 17, 2025 A regulation and discipline update provided by the body read: 'David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jurgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. 'It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1.' The PGMOL found Coote's actions made his position as a Premier League official 'untenable' and the organisation headed up by Howard Webb terminated his employment with immediate effect late last year. Coote was then handed a 16-month ban by UEFA in February for violating 'the basic rules of decent conduct' and bringing 'the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute'. Coote has rarely been seen in public since, but a report in The Sun earlier this month showed the former official enjoying a surprise new career. Coote has reportedly started working for the delivery company near his home in Newark in Nottinghamshire and opened up on his new role. 'I'm just trying to make an honest living,' he said. 'I want to get on with my life. I'm trying to move forwards and regain a sense of responsibility and purpose. The job is keeping me busy and occupied, it's not a new long-term career.

Shelbourne and Linfield paired in mouthwatering Champions League cross-border qualifier
It's an all-Irish derby in the first round of Champions League qualifying between Damien Duff and David Healy's teams Shelbourne and Linfield are set to clash in an historic Champions League qualifier that pits two Irish sides against each other. And in an intriguing sub-plot, it will be former Celtic coach Damien Duff against ex- Rangers midfielder David Healy in the dugouts. Duff led Shelbourne to an upset league title last season and they entered today's first qualifying round draw knowing there was a chance of an all-Irish derby against Linfield, the longstanding dominant force in Northern Irish football. And so it's proved with the sides set to meet first in Dublin on Tuesday July 8 or Wednesday July 9 with the second leg at Windsor Park a week later. It will be the second cross-border clash in a year with Shamrock facing Larne in the Conference League in October. But the stakes are higher this time with the champions from both divisions facing in a qualifier for UEFA's top competition. Linfield stormed to the Irish Premiership title last season as is the norm while Shelbourne upset the odds when they won the League of Ireland Premier Division under the tutelage of Duff, who previously served as a coach at Celtic Park. The tie has huge financial implications for the team with the winner guaranteed at least two more Champions League qualifying matches – one of which at home. It comes 20 years after the teams met in the inaugural all-Ireland Setanta Cup final, with Linfield triumphant at Tolka Park.
