Inamdar and Sunil looking forward to Maharashtra Derby
Maharashtra will not host any game in the Pro Kabaddi League's 12th edition but with the State being a kabaddi heartland and two of the fiercest rivals in the league hailing from the State, the PKL fever has caught up in Maharashtra. Sunil Kumar — the most successful PKL captain who will lead U Mumba — and Aslam Inamdar, who has recovered from an injury that cut short his Puneri Paltan sojourn in the previous season, are looking forward to the Maharashtra Derby on September 18. 'Being born and raised in Maharashtra, representing Puneri Paltan and bringing glory to the team and the state has been one of my proudest achievements. Returning from injury this season, I am determined to make an even bigger impact,' Inamdar, the only captain from Maharashtra to have lifted the trophy in PKL, said here on Thursday at a promotional event. Sunil, the stalwart, hoped that he could live up to the legacy and reputation of Maharashtra kabaddi and the U Mumba franchise. 'Maharashtra has always been a powerhouse of Kabaddi. Leading U Mumba, a team with such a strong legacy, is an honour. Our hard work in preparation is aimed at nothing less than bringing the trophy back to Mumbai,' he said. PKL 12 begins in Visakhapatnam on August 29, with Telugu Titans and Tamil Thalaivas facing each other.

'Rohit Will Retire After...': Ex-IND Batter Makes Big Claim About ODI Captain's Future
Last Updated: India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20Is on June 29, 2024, and quit Test cricket on May 7, 2025. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian men's ODI cricket team. Under his leadership, India finished as runners-up in the ODI World Cup 2023 and won the ICC Champions Trophy title earlier this year. In the summit clash played in Dubai on March 9, 2025, against New Zealand, Rohit played a 76-run knock in the 252-run chase. For his super show with the bat in the match Men in Blue won by four wickets, Rohit also won the Player of the Match award. In all likelihood Rohit will captain India now in the three-match ODI series against Australia as well in October 2025. But since Rohit's retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, there have been constant talks about his exit from ODIs as well. Many former greats and experts of the game feel that Rohit might not feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup. But according to former India batter Mohammad Kaif, the next 50-over mega event, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in a couple of years' time, will be Rohit's last tournament for India. He feels that after Rohit's exit, the Indian team management will appoint Shubman Gill as the new captain. Gill is the current captain of India's Test team and vice-captain of white-ball teams (both ODIs and T20Is). 'In the last three years, Gill has scored 2,000 runs. He is the future captain. He is the Test captain, and in T20Is, he is the vice-captain. Rohit is the ODI captain. He is almost 38 and I believe will retire after the 2027 ODI World Cup. When he steps away, Gill will become the captain," Kaif said on his YouTube channel. Rohit, who has scored more than 11,000 runs in ODI cricket, is the world's No. 2 batter in the 50-over format of the game. In the 11 ODI matches played since the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit has registered scores of 58, 64, 35, 2, 119, 1, 41, 20, 15, 28 and 76 runs. He was India's top run-getter in all three ODI matches played against Sri Lanka in Colombo last year. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. National Inter-State Athletics Championships: Tamil Nadu athletes steal spotlight with multiples meet records on Day 1
A sprint double, a shared gold, and multiple meet records - the 64th edition of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships began with plenty to celebrate for the host at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday. However, the larger objective of capitalising on the last chance to qualify for next month's World Championships could not be achieved as no one could come even close to the entry standards for Tokyo. On a typically hot and humid day — not ideal conditions for record-breaking performances — in the state capital, some of the athletes, dripping with perspiration, did push as hard as they could. In the men's 100m, local favourite Tamil Arasu S recorded the joint fourth-fastest time ever by an Indian as he raced to the finish line in 10.22s. He improved his own personal best (PB) timing by two tenths of a second and also bettered the four-year meet record of 10.27s set by Gurindervir Singh. The Punjab sprinter was not there to defend his title. Dhana Lakshmi, 27, made it a double delight for Tamil Nadu by clinching the women's 100m gold, with a PB of 11.36s, in only her third competition since her return to the track last month after serving a three-year doping ban. In the men's pole vault event, National Record holder Dev Meena was a major absentee. Local boys M. Gowtham and Reegan G decided to share the gold medal after both failed to go beyond 5.20m — already a PB for both as well as a new meet record — and could not be separated on countback also. The 24-year-old from Himachal Pradesh had won hearts after her silver medal-winning performance in the same event at the recently held World University Games after being unfairly denied the chance to compete in the 10000m due to an administrative error from the Indian officials. Amoj Jacob and Rajesh Ramesh, members of the Indian quartet which achieved a historic fifth-place finish in the 4x400m men's relay at the World Championships in 2023, comfortably made it to the final of the individual event in Chennai. However, R Vithya Ramraj, a title favourite in the women's event, finished last in her semifinal and appeared to be grimacing with pain in her heavily-strapped left ankle. Results (Finals only) Men 10,000m: Gold - UP's Abhishek Pal (30:56.64s), Silver - Karnataka's Shivaji Parashu Madappa (30:57.69s), Bronze - UP's Shivam (30:59.14s) Pole Vault: Gold - Tamil Nadu's Reegan G and M. Gowtham (5.20m), Bronze - Tamil Nadu's Kamal Loganathan (5.00m) 100m: Gold - Tamil Nadu's Tamil Arasu S (10.22s), Silver - Karnataka's Manikanta H H (10.35s), Bronze - Tamil Nadu's Ragul Kumar G (10.40s) Women Hammer Throw: Gold - UP's Tanya Chaudhary (63.91m), Silver - Odisha's Divya Shandilya (59.58m), Bronze - Rajasthan's Maya (57.57m) Triple Jump: Gold - Kerala's Sandra Babu (13.20m), Silver - Kerala's Aleena Saji (13.15m), Bronze - Punjab's Niharika Vashisht (13.09m) 100m: Gold - Tamil Nadu's Dhana Lakshmi (11.36s), Silver - Tamil Nadu's Abinaya Rajarajan (11.58s), Bronze - Karnataka's Sneha S S (11.602s) 5000m: Gold - Himachal Pradesh's Seema (15:42.64s), Silver - Maharashtra's Ravina Gayakwad (16:53.24s), Bronze - Jharkhand's Sanghamitra Mahata (18:04.36s) Published on Aug 20, 2025
