Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R. Ashok visited the agricultural fields affected by recent heavy rains in Hassan district, and demanded the State government to provide compensation for the growers.
Mr. Ashok visited maize farms at Kariganahalli in Alur taluk. He interacted with farmers, who told him that they suffered a huge loss due to downy mildew (bili-suli), a fungal infection that hit the maize crop.
Later, he visited coffee estates at Kyanahalli and Chinnahalli in Sakleshpur taluk. Coffee, pepper, and areca plantations had been badly hit by the recent rains.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ashok said that the government was not responding to the woes of the farming community. The representatives had not taken time to visit the farms and speak to the farmers here.
'The government should come to their rescue. And if it does not have money, the government should borrow it to give compensation to the farmers,' he said.
Regarding the sudden deaths due to heart attack in Hassan district, Mr. Ashok urged the State government to find out the reason. 'The Chief Minister became a laughing stock by commenting on the COVID-19 vaccine. The government should probe why there have been deaths in Hassan alone,' he said.
Legislators H.K. Suresh, Cement Manju, BJP district unit president Siddesh Nagendra, former MLA H.M. Vishwanath, and others were present.

Naini slams BRS leaders for baseless remarks

Launching scathing attack on BRS leaders and corporators, MLA Naini Rajender Reddy said that some people without proper subject knowledge have been making statements. He participated as chief guest and inaugurated development works in the 4rth division's Jyotibasunagar Colony on Friday. They included a CC road constructed with Rs 25 lakh and another CC road from Akshara Colony to the main road built at a cost of Rs 49.9 lakh. The MLA interacted with residents and listened to their issues. Recently, verbal clashes have intensified between the BRS and Congress corporators and leaders. Each side is conducting media conferences, challenging one another to public debates. Against this backdrop, the MLA strongly responded during his inauguration speech. He emphasised that funds were sanctioned with intent to involve everyone in the development process, regardless of party affiliation, because people across all divisions had voted for them with trust. He warned that he would present detailed evidence before the media comparing the works done during BRS's rule with the development achieved in just 18 months under the government. He stated that during BRS rule, funds were deliberately not allocated to divisions with Congress corporators, but under this government, public development and welfare are the main priorities. He mentioned that even in divisions with BJP and BRS corporators, funds are now being allocated on an equal basis. He criticised some BRS corporators for boycotting a recent Ballia council meeting not to fight for people's issues, but for political gain. As an MLA elected with the cooperation of everyone, he said he is working impartially and allocating funds for development without forgetting anyone. Since the Congress came to power, he said, with the support of CM, funds are being sanctioned for development of all colonies. In just 18 months, about Rs 4.5 crore has been allocated solely for the development of colonies in the division. Reddy stressed that understanding and solving public issues is his primary responsibility; development works taken up in colonies with the cooperation of GWMC and KUDA are progressing rapidly. He instructed officials and contractors to work in coordination to ensure the newly launched projects are completed within a short time.

Posts against PM, RSS: Cartoonist moves SC for anticipatory bail

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear the anticipatory bail plea of Indore-based cartoonist accused of uploading 'objectionable' cartoons of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS workers on social media. A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi agreed to hear on July 14, the plea filed by Hemant Malviya challenging the Madhya Pradesh High Court order refusing to grant him relief after advocate Vrinda Grover sought urgent hearing in the matter. The high court had observed that it was a gross misuse of freedom of speech. Grover submitted the matter pertains to a cartoon which Malviya made in 2021 during Covid and the high court said no landmark cases like in Arnesh Kumar and Imran Pratapgarhi, which dealt with life and liberty, will be followed. She submitted that the high court has condemned the cartoonist, 'The offence is under BNS which entails a maximum of three years of punishment,' Grover submitted. Justice Dhulia ordered that the matter will be listed on July 14 before the appropriate bench. On July 3, the high court refused to grant anticipatory bail to Malviya. A FIR was registered against Malviya at Lasudiya police station of Indore in May on the complaint of local lawyer and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh worker Vinay Joshi. Malviya hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and disturbed communal harmony by uploading objectionable material on social media, the complaint alleged. The FIR mentioned various 'objectionable' posts, including allegedly inappropriate comments on Lord Shiva as well as cartoons, videos, photographs and comments regarding Modi, RSS workers and others. '...on the face of it, the conduct of the applicant in depicting the RSS, which is a Hindu organisation, along with the prime minister of this country in the aforesaid caricature, coupled with his endorsement of a rather demeaning remark, dragging unnecessarily the name of Lord Shiva in the comments tagged to it, is nothing but sheer misuse of freedom of speech and expression as enshrined under Art 19(1)(a) of the Constitution...,' the high court said. '...the post becomes more unsettling when the aforementioned derogatory lines involving Lord Shiva are also added to it, and which have also been favourably endorsed by the applicant himself who is also encouraging other people to experiment with the said caricature, which certainly cannot be said to be made in good taste or faith,' the high court had further said in its order. The high court had added it was apparent that it was a deliberate and malicious attempt to outrage religious feelings and Malviya 'clearly overstepped the threshold of freedom of speech and expression'. 'In view of the same, this Court is of the considered opinion that the custodial interrogation of the applicant would be necessary,' the high court had said.

From ‘Hindu Hriday Samrat' to BJP rebel: T Raja Singh's rise, rifts and road ahead in Telangana Politics

HYDERABAD: Suspended BJP MLA T Raja Singh , often dismissed by critics as a rabble-rouser, remains a potent and polarising symbol of hardline Hindutva in Telangana. For his supporters and admirers, however, he is more than just a voice of outrage — he is revered as 'Hindu Hriday Samrat. ' From a humble start as a small entrepreneur, Singh's meteoric rise from corporator to three-time MLA from Goshamahal is as much a story of personal grit as it is of religious mobilisation. He remains the only elected representative from the Lodha community in the state, and his appeal rests heavily on his unabashed projection of Hindutva—often laced with provocation and political theatre. Singh's political style is marked by frequent controversies. With over 100 FIRs, mostly for hate speech and inciting communal tensions, he has often walked the edge of legality. He threatened to quit multiple times over issues like cow slaughter and religious conversions. He fi nally secured a BJP ticket in 2014 with support from Union home minister Amit Shah and went on to win Goshamahal, retaining the seat for three consecutive terms. Goshamahal's unique demography — a mix of north Indian and Gujarati Hindus alongside a sizable Muslim population — allowed Singh to pitch himself as a Hindu protector. He has led rallies during Hanuman Jayanti and Ganesh Chaturthi, using the 52-foot Hanuman statue in Dhoolpet as a symbolic centrepiece. His outreach has extended to digital Hindutva too — releasing devotional music and reaching followers via WhatsApp and proxy YouTube channels even after social media bans. In 2018, Singh served as BJP's fl oor leader in the assembly. However, in 2023, the post went to Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, further straining ties. Singh withdrew from party activities and kept a low profi le until his resignation was formally accepted on June 30. While his next political move is unclear, Singh insists he remains committed to the Hindutva cause — still a rebel in Telangana's turbulent political theatre.
