Sabres Notes: Thompson Trickin At The Worlds, Amerks Take On Laval

Yahoo15-05-2025
Team USA had a harrowing time with Norway in their fourth game at the 2025 IIHF World Championships in Herning, Denmark on Wednesday, as they jumped out to a 4-1 first period lead, and extended the lead to 5-1 early in the middle frame, but the underdog Norweigans rallied with four straight to tie it late in regulation before the Americans salvaged a 6-5 victory.
The scoring hero for the US was Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson, who scored unassisted in the first, added to the lead in the second on a setup by Utah's Clayton Keller, and scored the game-winner on the power play 4:09 into overtime with assists from a pair of Mammoths in Keller and Logan Cooley.
The win moves the US into third place in Group B at 2-1-1.

The Rochester Americans open their best-of-five AHL North second-round series against the Laval Rocket at Blue Cross Arena on Wednesday after a long layoff. The Amerks swept Syracuse in the opening round in three straight, with Devon Levi posting consecutive shutouts, but have been out of action for nearly two weeks.
Laval defeated Cleveland in four games and finished up that series on May 6, so it is likely that both squads will have to shake off some of the rust early on. Rochester will host the first two games on Wednesday and Friday, before the series shifts to Laval for Game 3 next Wednesday, Game 4(if necessary) on Fri, May 23, and Game 5 (if necessary) on Sun. May 25.

Team USA's 6 Ryder Cup Auto Bids Set With Scottie Scheffler Leading Way

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The BMW Championship wrapped up Sunday with Scottie Scheffler once again proving why he's the world No. 1. With longtime caddie Ted Scott absent due to personal matters, Scheffler teamed up with Michael Cromie and still managed to clinch his fifth title of the season. The $20 million event also locked in the final automatic qualifiers for Team USA's Ryder Cup squad. Six names are now officially qualified for Keegan Bradley's final Bethpage Black team. But that's half the team. The other half is still up for grabs, and the list is set to be out after the Tour Championship next week. Ryder Cup: Three New Faces Join Three Existing Ones Scheffler was the first to qualify, securing his spot months ago with wins at the PGA Championship and The Open. J.J. Spaun followed up next with a stunning US Open victory at Oakmont and a consistent top-10 finish. Despite a rocky season, the PGA Tour pro earned his place thanks to major wins in 2024. On Sunday, after the BMW Championship, three more names joined the fold. 6. Bryson DeChambeau Perhaps the most polarizing name on the list, DeChambeau clinched the final automatic spot despite playing on the LIV Golf circuit, which does not offer world ranking points, yet. The professional won at the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst and clinched top-10 finishes in three majors this year. DeChambeau's Ryder Cup record stands at 2-3-1. Still, his LIV Golf status will keep him banned from joining the rest of Team USA at the Procore Championship in Napa, unless the Tour decides otherwise. 5. Harris English English returns to the Ryder Cup stage after a solid showing at Whistling Straits in 2021, where he went 1-2-0. This season, he's been quietly effective, winning the Farmers Insurance Open and finishing runner-up at both the PGA Championship and The Open. With 11 top-25 finishes and 18 cuts made in 20 starts, English has shown remarkable consistency. 4. Russell Henley Henley quietly pieced together one of the most impressive seasons on Tour. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, finished T-2 at the Travelers Championship, and posted a top-10 in all four majors. Though this will be his Ryder Cup debut, he's no stranger to playing team golf, having partnered successfully with Scheffler at the Presidents Cup in Montreal. 3. Xander Schauffele Schauffele's season has been like a roller coaster ride. After missing the Tour Championship cut for the first time in his career, he might not be celebrating his Ryder Cup qualification with champagne, but his spot is well deserved. Despite an early-season back injury, the nine-time Tour champion rebounded with three top 10 finishes (The Masters, Genesis Scottish Open and The Open). His Ryder Cup record (4-4-0) and Presidents Cup experience make him one of Team USA's most reliable match-play assets. No doubt, fans expect him to be a key pairing piece once the action begins at Bethpage. 2. J.J. Spaun Spaun's rise to Ryder Cup status has been remarkable. His breakthrough came in June with a win at the US Open at rain-soaked Oakmont, but his season-long consistency is what truly earned him this spot. He pushed Rory McIlroy to a playoff at The Players in March and nearly took down Justin Rose at the FedEx St. Jude just last week. Not to mention his six top-10 finishes and a reputation for clutch putting, Spaun has proven he can handle pressure. 1. Scottie Scheffler There's no surprise here. The world No. 1 has been the most consistent and commanding player in the golf world this season. With wins at the PGA Championship, Open, Memorial, CJ Cup Byron Nelson and most recently, the BMW Championship, he's not just the top-ranked American but quite literally the heartbeat of Team USA. Scheffler locked his spot weeks ago, having amassed nearly four times the Ryder Cup points of his closest competitors. His 18 wins this year and just one leg to achieving the Grand Slam speak more than words can explain. "Representing the United States at the Ryder Cup has been one of the greatest honors of my career," Scheffler told reporters after getting qualified for the Team. Big Names Left Out Keegan Bradley, the US captain, had his last chance to push himself for the automatic qualification but now sits just outside the top six. Despite a win at the Travelers Championship and five top-10s this season, he didn't qualify automatically. Now, he is left with the option of picking himself to play a dual role at the Ryder Cup. Other notable absentees include Justin Thomas, who missed the automatic qualification spot by just 1 position. Thomas, now at 7th, had a strong major showing but inconsistent finishes. Additionally, Collin Morikawa, who was at No. 8 with two top-10s in majors, but no wins, sits out alongside Ben Griffin and Sam Burns. Scottie Scheffler leads six qualifiers for US Ryder Cup team

Advertisement DeChambeau wound up at No. 6 in the standings. Harris English moved past him with his tie for 12th in the BMW Championship to finish at No. 5, qualifying for his first team on his own. English was a captain's pick for the 2021 matches at Whistling Straits. The leading six players for the Americans were Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, English, and DeChambeau. All those spots — except for DeChambeau — were practically set going into the final qualifying event. Justin Thomas would have needed to finish around the top 10 to supplant DeChambeau. Instead, he will need to rely on a captain's pick for the second straight Ryder Cup. Related : The Ryder Cup is Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black. Bradley will announce six captain's picks on Aug. 27, the Wednesday after next week's Tour Championship. Advertisement 'Most years it seems very obvious,' Scheffler said of the US team. 'Once we continue to keep playing next week, it will become more obvious. Right now, I think a couple of spots are still up for grabs.' The Tour Championship in some ways becomes a final audition for Bradley, who is considering taking himself as a pick after finishing 11th in the standings. Thomas was No. 7 followed by Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy, Bradley, Brian Harman, Andrew Novak, Cameron Young, and Patrick Cantlay. All of the potential captain's picks will be at East Lake next week for the Tour Championship. Europe's qualifying ends next week at the British Masters — players like Shane Lowry at the Tour Championship and Tyrrell Hatton at LIV Golf are not eligible for points. That makes Hatton at No. 5 a lock to be on another team. Lowry, who replaced Straka at No. 6, can only be passed by Rasmus Hojgaard next week. Luke Donald also has six captain's picks.
