Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill has oblique injury, out of joint practice vs. Bears
It's unclear when the injury occured, though Hill sat out of Wednesday's practice with an undisclosed ailment.
Other injuries to monitor include that of edge rusher Mo Kamara, who suffered a concussion and did not travel with the team, and fullback Alec Ingold. The 29-year-old fullback traveled with the team despite sustaining a concussion in the final moments of Sunday's practice.
'If he would have been the fastest protocol [clearance] in the history of America,' McDaniel said Friday. Ingold must participate in at least two practices without feeling the effects of his concussion to be cleared from the NFL concussion protocol. 'This turnaround for a joint practice wouldn't be best for a fullback.'
Coincidentally, Hill sustained last year's wrist injury during a joint practice with the Washington Commanders. He was also limited during the joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year because of the wrist injury, which needed to be surgically repaired at the end of the 2024 season.
His absence forced starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to lean on Jaylen Waddle and the rest of Miami's receiving corps, which features three receivers — Malik Washington, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Dee Eskridge — whom Tagovailoa need to develop better chemistry with.
All three are pushing to earn significant roles in Miami's offense this season.

Thursday's preseason game between the Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks marked an early homecoming for Raiders head coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Geno Smith. (He recently made headlines again last summer, after being removed as a volunteer coach and sued by his high school.) On Thursday, Carroll was seen trying to take down the sign from the fan after the interaction, seemingly understanding the effect it had on Smith. Smith, who was drafted in the second round of the 2013 draft out of West Virginia, was on his way to becoming a career backup before finding his resurgence with the Seahawks. With Russell Wilson sent to the Denver Broncos, Smith won Seattle's starting job in 2022, eventually earning his first Pro Bowl nod and the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year. Carroll, who had coached the Seahawks since 2010, was a mentor for Smith during that time, before he and the team parted ways at the end of the 2023 season. When Carroll stepped out of retirement to take the Raiders' coaching job, it was only fitting to have Smith join him: The veteran QB was traded to Las Vegas in March. Smith eventually signed a two-year extension with the Raiders to keep him out of free agency next offseason. Thursday's preseason game ended with a 23-23 tie between Carroll's old team and his new one. In a game that primarily featured Aidan O'Connell at QB for Las Vegas, Smith played limited snaps, but went 1-for-3 for 15 yards in the draw.

5 plays that stood out from Dolphins' preseason opener vs. Bears
The Miami Dolphins' preseason opener is a wrap. And, in perfect preseason fashion, it ended deadlocked in a 24-24 tie between the Dolphins and Chicago Bears. There's plenty of overreactions to be drawn and some notable takeaways, too. But, what did some of the highlights—or lowlights in a couple cases—look like on Sunday for Miami? Here are five plays that stood out from Sunday's preseason opener between the Dolphins and Bears: Willie Gay sacks Tyson Bagent Listed as one of Miami's backup linebackers in the initial preseason depth chart unveil, Willie Gay Jr. still looks primed to carve out a role on the Dolphins' defense. The two-time Super Bowl champion signed with Miami on a one-year, $1.34 million deal in March. Gay showed early in the preseason why he's been one of the training camp stars. On the second snap of the preseason, Gay rushed in off the edge and dumped Bagent for a six-yard sack. Gay would finish his day with three tackles. 4th-and-3 completion to Malik Washington The Dolphins gambled quite a bit last season, finishing tied-fifth in fourth-down attempts in 2024 with 31. Naturally, on the first fourth down of the preseason, the Dolphins gambled again. Was this an early harbinger of what's to come for Miami? Either way, it was great to see quarterback Tua Tagovailoa stand in and deliver a strike on the out route to Malik Washington, who is making a strong case as the Dolphins' No. 3 wide receiver option. Washington had a nice day, catching four passes for 18 yards, including another on a 3rd-and-4 snap that helped the Dolphins generate a goal-to-go situation on Tagovailoa's lone series of the day. 35-yard connection to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine The Dolphins have one of the NFL's best wide receiver duos in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The aforementioned Malik Washington figures to be one of Miami's top pass-catching options as well. But, Miami would love to keep building depth in that room. One of Miami's top free agent additions got into the act early on Sunday. Nick Westbrook-Ikhine had just one grab on the day, but it was a big one. The 6'2, 211-pound receiver snagged a 35-yard grab from Dolphins backup quarterback Zach Wilson to set up the first touchdown of the preseason for Miami. Westbrook-Ikhine signed a two-year, $5.99 million contract with the Dolphins in March after reeling in 32 catches for 497 yards and nine touchdowns a season ago in Tennessee. Patrick McMorris picks off Bagent The Dolphins' lone takeaway of the day was a notable moment for a couple of young Miami backups. Second-string cornerback Ethan Bonner deflected a pass intended for Bears receiver Samori Toure and third-string safety Patrick McMorris was right there waiting to intercept the Bagent pass. It was an important moment for a pair of Dolphins looking to lock in 53-man roster spots and to perhaps crack Miami's defensive rotation. Quinn Ewers fumbles twice Seventh-round draft pick Quinn Ewers had a rough welcome to NFL action in his preseason debut. After a three-and-out on his first series of work, Ewers tried to extend a third-and-10 snap and fumbled the football way on a sack. The former Texas Longhorn would lead a pair of scoring drives—an eight-play touchdown drive and a six-play drive that ended with a 56-yard field goal—but there was also some ugly mixed in there, too. Ewers finished 5-of-18 passing for 91 yards and fumbled again on a fourth-and-15 snap on the Dolphins' second-to-last possession with a chance to drive Miami for the win.

Cease, Padres' bullpen too much for Boston as the Padres beat the Red Sox 6-2
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Dylan Cease was impressive for six innings before San Diego's All-Star-laden bullpen got into and out of trouble in the seventh and the Padres beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2 on Sunday to take two of three. The Padres have won 11 of 14 games as they continue to chase the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Cease (5-10) cruised into the seventh with a shutout on just three singles and a walk before walking Jarren Duran and allowing a single to Trevor Story. All-Star Jason Adam came on and hit Masataka Yoshida with his first pitch to load the bases and then two runs scored when shortstop Xander Bogaerts committed a fielder error on a potential double-play grounder by Romy Gonzalez. Wilyer Abreu singled to load the bases again before Adam struck out Ceddanne Rafaela and pinch-hitter Abraham Toro. All-Star Adrian Morejon came on and struck out rookie Roman Anthony to end the inning. Cease allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out seven and walking two. San Diego scored its first five runs with two outs, with starter Brayan Bello (8-6) on the hook for all five. Luis Arraez hit a two-run double in the third, Fernando Tatis Jr. added an RBI single in the fifth before being thrown out trying to stretch it into a double and Bogaerts — who played for Boston from 2013-2022 — singled in the sixth before stealing second base.
