8 killed in Colombia terrorist attacks
The latest terrorist attack occurred in a rural area in Jamundi, a town in western Valle del Cauca department, which claimed three lives.
Jamundi mayor Paola Castillo condemned the attack and said that officers found a cylinder on the Guachinte Bridge that exploded.
The head of the Colombian police force, Carlos Fernando Triana confirmed on the social platform X that three police officers died as a result of the wave of attacks in the city of Cali, capital of Valle del Cauca department. Two civilians were also killed and another 10 injured.
The Third Division of the Colombian National Army condemned the attacks in various towns in the southwestern departments in Colombia.
"We express our absolute support for the Colombian police, which have been a direct target of these cowardly attacks, and we reiterate our unwavering commitment to the defense and security of citizens," it said in a statement.
The army announced that security forces have been deployed as reinforcements in the affected areas.

New Delhi, Aug 16 (UNI) The festival of Janmashtami was celebrated with gaiety and religious fervor across the national capital today as devotees thronged temples decorated with flowers and lights. Since morning, the atmosphere at the temples in the city was full of enthusiasm with people visiting the places of worship where Lord Krishna hymns set the tone for the Janmashtami celebrations. Many observed fast on the occasion, while devotees decorated their puja rooms with flowers and offered sweets to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. One of the most noteworthy parts of the festival is the 'Janmashtami' tableaux, also referred to as the popular 'Jhankis,' cherished by people of all age groups, especially children. These artistic displays depicting Lord Krishna's life, especially those of his childhood were set up at temples across the city, showcasing various aspects of Krishna's life starting from his childhood, beautifully telling the story in a visual form. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also celebrated the auspicious festival with great devotion, offering prayers at temples across the national capital. Extending her heartfelt wishes to the people of Delhi, the CM prayed for peace, prosperity, good health and happiness for every citizen. Speaking on the occasion, Gupta said that the life and teachings of Lord Krishna remain a guiding light for humanity. She said that Lord Krishna's entire life inspires everyone to walk the path of righteousness, justice and duty. His message of courage, compassion and truth is timeless, and continues to show us the way forward even in difficult times, Gupta added. CM began the day's celebrations by visiting the ISKCON temple in East of Kailash, where she performed aarti, joined devotees in singing bhajans, and participated in the festivities. Later, Gupta visited Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan (Qutubgarh), as well as temples in Prashant Vihar, Shalimar Bagh and other areas of Delhi. At these gatherings, she offered makhan-mishri (butter and sugar), swung the idol of child Krishna in a ceremonial cradle, and joined the devotional congregation. Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Gupta stated that Lord Krishna is not only a revered deity, but also a symbol of duty and truth. Kerala CM to inaugurate Economics, Statistics department surveys
South Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 17 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the new surveys of the Department of Economics and Statistics here on August 25. From 2025–26 onwards, Kerala will participate in the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE), both conducted nationwide by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Union Ministry of Statistics. The government expects that participation in these surveys will help design and implement new schemes for the benefit of the state's youth and job seekers. The PLFS provides vital statistics on the labour sector, human resources, and workforce, including indicators such as the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR), and the Unemployment Rate. The ASUSE collects data on various economic features of enterprises in the unorganised non-agricultural sector engaged in production, trade, and services (excluding manufacturing). It covers aspects such as economic activities, employment generation, capital investment, and the use of digital technology in unorganised enterprises. Until now, NSO survey data were available only at the state level. With Kerala's participation, district-level statistics will also become accessible. This is expected to provide more accurate data for project planning, enable a better assessment of changing labour markets, and support the preparation of estimates for calculating district-level income. Putin briefs Kremlin on Trump meeting, terms it highly useful
Moscow, Aug 16 (UNI) Briefing the Kremlin on the results of his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, Russian President Vladmir Putin made several statements, terming the visit 'highly useful', with the talks in Anchorage bringing each side closer to a solution. According to RIA Novosti, the Russian leader praised the negotiations, stating "We haven't had direct negotiations of this kind at this level for a long time. I repeat once again, there was an opportunity to calmly and in detail once again set out our position." Even though no defining agreement was reached between Moscow and Washington in Anchorage, Putin called the discussions frank and said that ending the war requires the elimination of its root causes. "We, of course, respect the position of the American administration, which sees the need for a speedy end to military actions. Well, we would also like this and would like to move to resolving all issues by peaceful means." On Friday, the two leaders met in Alaska's Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage for a three-on-three format discussion that lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes. Apart from the two heads of state, the delegations from both sides included key members of both nation's administrations. The Russian side was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential aide Yury Ushakov, while the United States was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Both Putin and Trump declared their readiness to work on ending the conflict in Ukraine. According to Trump, there is no agreement on important points of the settlement yet, but there is a good chance of reaching an agreement. Agreeing for the need of a full-on comprehensive peace agreement as opposed to his earlier demands for a ceasefire, Trump is slated to meet his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday to make a deal with Russia, putting the onus of arriving at a peace agreement on him and Europe.
