Maryam using provincial resources to complete all projects: Azma
LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has said the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is completing all developmental projects using provincial resources, with no federal project currently ongoing in Punjab.
'All development work is being carried out using the provincial budget,' she said, while addressing a joint press conference with Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, here at DGPR on Thursday.
Azma said the Punjab government had set a new precedent with exemplary cleanliness arrangements during Eid, which had been widely appreciated by the public. She announced that Punjab's annual budget would be presented in the Provincial Assembly on June 16. Making an important announcement, she said that the Chief Minister of Punjab had rejected any proposal for new taxes, and the upcoming budget would be tax-free.
In order to expand the tax net, those who previously evaded taxes would now be brought into the system to increase state resources, she clarified.
Praising the Chief Minister's initiatives, Azma Bokhari said 'her effective actions are causing envy in several circles.' She added that the Chief Minister was utilising all provincial resources to complete developmental projects, aiming for equal progress in all provinces so that every citizen can benefit.
Azma Bokhari maintained that 'Gandapur is trying to become a cheap Maula Jatt, and that even Aleema Baji herself says they don't want to come to Islamabad, so they should consult their advisers before making any statements.'
She further stated that the federal budget attempted to provide relief to the people, and due to the strict IMF programme, the federal government presented a balanced budget, while Punjab's tax-free budget will be presented on June 16.
Azma criticized the Sindh government, saying 'they don't do their own work but express their frustration at Punjab.' She remarked that the Karachi Mayor hadn't even managed to lift garbage yet.
Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat stated that Punjab has increased the education development budget by a record 400 percent, raising it from Rs 32 billion to Rs 110 billion. Similarly, the higher education budget was also being increased by up to 500 percent, he said.
He said 'Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz believes education should have no boundaries, yet the KP government is showing hostility to students by instructing their Higher Education Department not to cooperate with students. If Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cannot provide laptops and scholarships to its students, it should at least allow them to receive support from other provinces,' he said.

Labour bodies slam 'anti-worker budget'
Labour leaders and worker organisations have submitted a charter of demands to the Director Labour (East and West), calling on the Punjab government to set the minimum wage at Rs70,000 per month and to implement a 100% wage increase for power loom workers. The demand was led by Chairman of the Pakistan Labour Qaumi Movement and President of the Haqooq-e-Khalq Party Punjab Baba Latif Ansari, who criticised the federal budget as a "pro-capitalist, IMF-driven" document that neglects the working class. The delegation included leaders and representatives from the powerloom, hosiery and garment sectors. Speaking at the gathering, Ansari said, "This budget has been drafted under IMF diktats. It benefits both domestic and foreign capitalist interests while worsening inflation, inequality, and unemployment for working people." He slammed the government's move to reduce the super tax on corporations, increase defence spending by 16%, and allocate the largest share of the budget to debt servicing — while offering only a 10% raise to government workers, including grade-1 labourers and grade-22 officers alike. He also criticised the meagre 7% pension increase, which he argued is entirely inadequate in the face of rising inflation. "Meanwhile, parliamentarians enjoy massive pay hikes — Senate and National Assembly heads saw their salaries skyrocket from Rs200,000 to Rs1.3 million — while workers are thrown crumbs." The charter of demands also criticised the lack of taxation on the agricultural elite and the promotion of corporate farming, warning that the latter would give rise to a new class of feudal lords. "This is an anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-people budget," said Ansari. "We reject it completely and demand that the government prioritise the real backbone of the economy: the workers." Shabbir Kalyyar, Director Labour (West), said that determining minimum wages for workers in industrial and commercial establishments falls under the mandate of the Punjab Minimum Wages Board. He added that the board comprises representatives of both employers and workers, ensuring all stakeholder perspectives are considered. "We have received charters of demands from various labour unions across multiple sectors," he said. "These will be forwarded to the higher offices of the Punjab government, which holds the final authority to approve any increase." Sheikh Nisar Ahmad, President of the Powerlooms Sector in Sadhar, expressed concern that out of approximately 5,700 workers employed in 300 powerloom factories in the Sadhar Industrial Estate, none are formally registered with the Social Security Department. He alleged that factory owners deposit contributions for only a few workers, and social security cards are not being issued.

President meet splits PPP's Pindi chapter
Internal divisions within the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Rawalpindi chapter have intensified, with growing factionalism and deepening rifts among party workers and groups after a select-group of activists managed to meet President Asif Ali Zardari. The already simmering tensions among PPP loyalists have been further aggravated by a recent meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr, where only select party activists were invited to meet the President of Pakistan. KP govt presents Rs2.19 trln surplus budget 2025-26 with no new tax
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government on Friday presented Rs2.119 trillion surplus budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 with no new tax and an increase of 10 percent in salary and seven percent in pension of its employees. Presenting the annual budget, Finance Minister KP Aftab Alam said that the estimated annual expenditures for the new fiscal year would be Rs 1962 billion with a surplus of Rs157 billion. Giving the break-up, the Minister said that government was expecting to get Rs 292.340 billion from the federal government for the merged tribal districts including Rs80 billion current budget grant, Rs39.600 annual development program, Rs50 billion under AIP, Rs42.740 billion as their share from other provinces and Rs17 billion for TDPs. According to the minister, he said that Rs 3.293 billion would be received from PSDP, Rs 1506.92 billion from the federal receipts, Rs129 billion provincial owns receipts and Rs10.250 other receipts, Rs 291.340 million from merged districts receipts and Rs177.188 million from federal projects assistance. He said that Rs137.912 would be collected through one percent of the divisible pool on war on terror, Rs. 57.115 billion as straight transfer under the head of gas and oil royalty, Rs 58.151 billion as windfall levy on oil, Rs 34.580 as net hydel profit current year and Rs71.410 as net hydel profit arrears. He said that no new tax has been imposed in the budget; rather tax net base has been enhanced with Rs 83.500 billion tax receipts and Rs45.500 billion non-tax receipts for the new fiscal year. Similarly, the other receipts of Rs 10.25 billion would include capital receipts of Rs 0.250 billion and Rs10 billion in other ways and means and Rs1.14 trillion as federal tax assignment.
