Caitlin Clark Turns Heads With Surprising Lead Over A'ja Wilson Before WNBA Season

Yahoo14-05-2025

While betting odds are usually the most trustworthy indicator of reality--money talks, after all--they can sometimes be skewed based on popularity and perception. Betting on, say, the Yankees or the Lakers or Notre Dame, for example, is usually a bad idea, because the lines tend to move based on the fact that those teams have such strong nationwide fan bases.
We could be seeing the same thing in the WNBA, where Caitlin Clark stormed into the league as the No. 1 pick last year and backed up the hype by winning the league's Rookie of the Year award, averaging 19.8 points, 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds, and setting a rookie record for 3-pointers made.

Given that her team, the Indiana Fever, went 20-20 last year but has made significant talent upgrades in the offseason, it stands to reason that Clark could well graduate from the ROY award to a bigger award: MVP. If she improves her numbers and the Fever become one of the top teams in the league, she will be a top candidate.

But the favorite? It is probably too soon for that, not with A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces coming off a dominant season in which she set a record with 26.9 points per game, adding 11.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots.
Wilson swept all 67 first-place votes for the MVP award in 2024. Runner-up Napheesa Collier of the Lynx and center Breanna Stewart of the Liberty (who was third) will be in the mix, too. Still, Clark's popularity is undeniable.
Clark was fourth in MVP balloting last year, but according to BetMGM, she is now the favorite to be the 2025 MVP. That would be a stunning rise, even for a player of Clark's ability, though it should be note that at plus-195, she is only a slight favorite over Wilson (plus-200) and Collier (plus-250).

Clark and the Fever will tip off their season on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis against the Chicago Sky.

Calls Mount for MLB to Make Changes After Cubs' Loss to Phillies

Calls Mount for MLB to Make Changes After Cubs' Loss to Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs-Philadelphia Phillies game on Monday was a standard close battle between contenders, until it wasn't. Advertisement Three-time All-Star Kyle Tucker broke the ice with a 387-foot solo homer to right in the top of the first for the Cubs before Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth. Left fielder Weston Wilson followed up in the fifth with an RBI single to right, making it 2-1 Phillies. Chicago left fielder Ian Happ then smacked a 424-foot solo homer to left, tying the game 2-2. After that, Cubs manager Craig Counsell got in trouble. The 2001 NLCS MVP came out to talk to home plate umpire Stu Scheurwater after Philadelphia third baseman Otto Kemp's infield single to start the bottom of the ninth. He asked Scheurwater to check the replay for runner's interference, and the umpire handed him his second ejection in as many days. MLB fans were beside themselves on social media, with many calling for the league to make changes to its umpiring situation. Advertisement "These umps really need repercussions for being blind..." one fan said. "All around the league has been just terrible this year." "Fix your umpires, Rob [Manfred]," another one said. "#UmpShow #RobotUmps." "Figure it the [expletive] out @MLB," another one said. "Rob needs to do something," another said. Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11).Sam Navarro-Imagn Images These comments continued coming in from upset fans. "The power trippin needs to stop," another said. "Umps are soft as [expletive], another said. "We can't get robot umps soon enough." The Phillies didn't score that inning, but they won the game 4-3 on outfielder Brandon Marsh's walk-off single in the 11th. Austin Wells' 5 RBIs, Aaron Judge's 469-foot homer power Yankees to rout of Royals

Austin Wells hit a three-run homer and finished with five RBIs, Aaron Judge hit the third-longest homer in the majors this season, and the New York Yankees routed the Kansas City Royals 10-2 on Tuesday night. Max Fried (9-1) bounced back from his first loss of the season, pitching seven innings of two-run ball for New York. Wells homered on a full-count pitch from Noah Cameron (2-2) with two outs in the fourth inning, then added a two-run double in the sixth after a 10-pitch duel with Taylor Clarke. He matched his career high for RBIs in a game. Judge's two-run homer in the first had an exit velocity of 117.9 mph and traveled 469 feet, landing on the roof of the Royals Hall of Fame in left field. Only the Angels' Mike Trout and Logan O'Hoppe have hit longer home runs this season. Judge added a bloop RBI single in the sixth inning, when the Yankees put the game away with five more runs off the Kansas City bullpen. Cody Bellinger drove in one of them with the 1,000th hit of his career. Cameron wound up allowing six runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. It was the first time in the left-hander's first six big league starts that he allowed more than one run or failed to make it through six innings. Jac Caglianone singled and had an RBI groundout in his home debut for Kansas City. Jonathan India homered in the sixth, and Tyler Tolbert singled in the eighth for his first big league hit. KEY MOMENT Judge's homer sent a shock through a star-studded crowd. Among those at Kauffman Stadium were Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Hall of Famers George Brett and Reggie Jackson, and actor and noted Yankees fan Alfonso Ribeiro. KEY STAT Judge has reached safely in 61 of 65 games this season, including every game the Yankees have played on the road. UP NEXT RHP Clarke Schmidt (2-3, 4.04 ERA) starts Tuesday night for New York. LHP Kris Bubic (5-3, 1.43 ERA) gets the nod for Kansas City.

Ja Morant Sends 9-Word Message on NBA's Unexpected MVP Decision

Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies were the second seed in the Western Conference on Feb. 27, but they couldn't produce when it counted most. The club slid all the way to the eighth seed by the end of the regular season and fired head coach Taylor Jenkins in the process. It then lost to the Golden State Warriors in the first Play-In game before winning the do-or-die second Play-In match vs. the Dallas Mavericks. Advertisement However, the glory was short lived, as they got swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. The latter team is now in a second-round bout with the Denver Nuggets, who they'll host for Game 7 on Sunday. The series features the top two MVP candidates in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic. Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic (15), Nuggets guard Christian Braun (0), and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2).Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images The NBA still hasn't announced the winner yet, and Morant sounded off about the unusual delay on social media. 'They got to see who wins the series first,' the Murray State alum said. He was responding to Minnesota Timberwolves guard Bones Hyland, who asked 'Anybody else wondered why they haven't announced MVP yet?' The NBA taking this long to announce MVP has been an unexpected decision among fans, and clearly players as well. Last season, Jokic was announced as league MVP on May 8, 2024 (via NBA). Advertisement Gilgeous-Alexander won the scoring title this season with 32.7 points per game on 51.9 percent shooting (37.5 percent 3 PT). On the other hand, Jokic was third with 29.6 points, ninth with a 57.6 percent field goal clip, third with 12.7 rebounds, and second with 10.2 assists. The 2014 second-round pick also shot 41.7 percent from deep. Whoever wins Game 7 will have homecourt advantage over the Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals.
