The Philadelphia Phillies organization held its breath after Zack Wheeler reported shoulder soreness and needed to undergo an MRI after his 10-strikeout performance on Aug. 2.
However, the organization and Phillies fans can breathe a sigh of relief after manager Rob Thomson gave an encouraging update after simply just bumping back his next start to Sunday, Aug. 10.
"It's clean," Thomson told Matt Gelb of The Athletic."
Thomson was also very brief when asked if there was any thought of skipping his start entirely or adding a sixth member of the rotation.

It's a breath of fresh air for the Phillies and their fans as Wheeler has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. Wheeler also hasn't been his normal self since he pitched the complete game on July 6 against the Cincinnati Reds.
The goal is, with two days of extra rest, to help the Phillies' ace get through a tough patch of the season. To say Thomson and the rest of the team rely on him is an understatement. Philadelphia needs him to stay healthy and get back to his old ways with the division race far from over.
Wheeler declined to speak on Wednesday after he played catch with some teammates to test how his arm was feeling. Given that he is in an unusual position, it makes sense for him not to talk. But the words from his manager are what Phillies fans want to hear.

Tigers' Trade Deadline Acquisition Already Turning Heads In Detroit
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers are one of the better teams in the American League behind the dominance of ace Tarik Skubal. Even with the Tigers winning this much, the front office didn't take a super aggressive approach at the trade deadline. While they made a handful of moves, none of them jumped off the page as a blockbuster deal. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter recently suggested the Tigers' addition of pitcher Chris Paddack was one of the more under-the-radar additions of the trade deadline. Detroit landed Paddack in a deadline deal with the Minnesota Twins. DETROIT, MI - AUGUST 5: Chris Paddack #40 of the Detroit Tigers pitches against the Minnesota Twins during the second inning at Comerica Park on August 5, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. DETROIT, MI - AUGUST 5: Chris Paddack #40 of the Detroit Tigers pitches against the Minnesota Twins during the second inning at Comerica Park on August 5, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan."The club stuck with him as their No. 5 starter this year, and he had a 4.95 ERA in 111 innings over 21 starts before he was traded to the Tigers on July 28 in an under-the-radar deal that sent low-level catcher Enrique Jimenez the other way," Reuter wrote. "He made his Tigers debut on Wednesday and tossed six innings of three-hit, one-run ball against the D-backs for his second consecutive quality start. "The Tigers also acquired Charlie Morton on deadline day, and Paddack will likely compete with him down the stretch for the potential No. 4 starter job in the playoffs behind Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, and Jack Flaherty." In 111 innings with the Twins, Paddack held a respectable 4.95 ERA, 4.42 FIP, and 1.27 WHIP. He wasn't spectacular, but his addition to the Tigers' rotation is going to be crucial down the stretch. In two starts with the Tigers, Paddack has thrown 10 innings and surrendered five runs on nine hits without a walk. His addition at the backend of the rotation is going to be huge for Detroit down the stretch. More MLB: MLB Rumors: Red Sox Pushed To Add Former Dodgers 11-Year Veteran

Phillies Could Trade For Orioles' Adley Rutschman If JT Realmuto Leaves In Free Agency
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies seem set for the playoffs as they've held one of the best records in the National League for most of the season. Barring a late-season collapse, they'll have another chance to secure a World Series title for Bryce Harper and Co. But there's reason to believe this will be the final season of their championship window. Key veterans like Kyle Schwarber and Ranger Suarez are set to hit free agency after this year and could opt for big contracts with new teams, leaving the Phillies' aging core behind. But the potential departure of one veteran star, catcher JT Realmuto, might open up the chance to reload with a younger one at the vacated position. "Even if Realmuto is no longer at the height of his powers, the combination of him still being productive and his excellent reputation around the league will likely mean he garners a two or three-year commitment this offseason," Tim Kelly wrote for On Pattison. "Eventually, you have to get younger." WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 06: J.T. (Photo by) More Rapfogel/Getty Given the likely market value of Realmuto's next contract, Kelly suggested that the Phillies look to a trade for Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman instead. "While Rutschman will get a raise from his $5.5 million salary in 2026 — his penultimate year of arbitration eligibility — it will still probably be cheaper than whatever Realmuto gets in free agency," Kelly added. "As Kyle Schwarber's price skyrockets, any extra savings might help president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to retain the NL MVP candidate and still build a World Series-caliber roster." As he enjoys another productive season, Realmuto's next contract is projected to reach $55 million over four years, per Spotrac. Given that latest update, the Phillies could be looking to make a trade for a younger star in the offseason. More MLB: Yankee Legends Floated to Replace Aaron Boone; Here's Who Would Really Get Job
