Confusion persists as Congress leaders continue to discuss leadership issue

The Hindu3 days ago
Days after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reiterated that he would be in the post for the full five-year term, confusion over the leadership in the Karnataka Congress seems to persist.
On Sunday, supporters of Public Works Minister Satish Jharkiholi raised slogans in Chitradurga that he would be the next Chief Minister, even as two senior Ministers continued their support to Mr. Siddaramaiah. This comes amid the Chief Minister's camp trying to project the 'Sadhana Samavesha' in his home district of Mysuru on July 19, where a slew of development works will be launched, as a rally of show of strength on his home turf. The event is expected to have central leaders, apart from State leaders, in attendence.
An event to launch a series of development programmes in Mysuru on July 19 by Mr. Siddaramaiah is set to be projected as the Congress government's 'Sadhana Samavesha'. Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa, who participated in a preparatory meeting in Mysuru on Saturday, held discussions with MLAs, former MLAs, chairpersons of boards and corporations, public representatives, officials, and leaders from Mysuru and adjoining Chamarajanagar districts to make the event a grand success.
Meanwhile, Industries Minister M.B. Patil told reporters on Sunday, 'There is no tussle within the party. Whatever decision is taken by the high command will be applicable to all, including Mr. Siddaramaiah, D.K. Shivakumar, and me.' He added, 'It is natural that Mr. Siddaramaiah said he is the Chief Minister now, and he will continue for five years. What is wrong with that?'
To a question on the claim of legislators' support by the Chief Minister, the Minister said: 'I do not know what he meant by that. In the current context, legislators' support is for Mr. Siddaramaiah. It does not mean that legislators do not support Mr. Shivakumar. He too has the support of legislators.'
In Mangaluru, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy told reporters that Mr. Siddaramaiah had the support of all legislators, including Mr. Shivakumar's. 'He has himself clarified that he would be the Chief Minister for five years,' he said.
Speculation scoffed off
Even as the leadership issue continues to plague the party, Mr. Shivakumar, Deputy Chief Minister, clarified in a post on X that his visit to Shirdi and other places, including Delhi, was a private one, and that there need not be any politics attached to it. Sources close to him confirmed that he met the legal team to discuss his cases and no political motives need to be attributed to the visit.
Meanwhile, scoffing off the speculation over Mr. Siddaramaiah being asked to come to Delhi by the month end to discuss party matters, sources in the Chief Minister's Office said his Delhi visit was to attend a dinner with diplomats of other countries — an event organised by IT Minister Priyank Kharge on August 1 — and attend a seminar organised by the All India Congress Committee's legal cell on August 2. 'The seminar is being inaugurated by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Mr. Siddaramaiah will be presenting a paper on 'Social justice: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's vision'. There is no scheduled meeting with central leaders during the visit as of now,' sources said.
It is also learnt that AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala will be arriving in Bengaluru on July 16 to continue with his meetings with legislators to elicit their opinion on party work and governance. This will be the third visit of Mr. Surjewala in as many weeks. 'The Chief Minister is likely to discuss the nomination of four members to the Legislative Council with him next week.'

No alliance at the top, but Congress, AAP discuss strategy ahead of Goa assembly session

Even though Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has announced that there would be no alliance with the Congress, local leaders of the two parties have come together to coordinate the opposition's strategy ahead of the monsoon session of the Goa assembly. The session will be held from July 21 to August 8. Congress and AAP MLAs attended a meeting called by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on July 15, while the leaders of other opposition parties including the Goa Forward Party and Revolutionary Goans Party remained absent. "I convened a meeting with the opposition MLAs, including AAP MLAs Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva, and Congress's Carlos Alvares Ferreira and Altone D'Costa," Mr. Alemao said in a statement. The purpose was to draw up the opposition's strategy, he said. "The discussion was productive, with valuable inputs from MLAs Venzy Viegas, Carlos, Altone and Cruz on how to hold the BJP government accountable," said Mr. Alemao who belongs to the Congress. "We are united in our determination to protect Goa from the corrupt BJP government's clutches," he added. Congress MLAs have submitted over 750 Legislative Assembly Questions (LAQs) for the session, Mr. Alemao said. AAP Goa president Amit Palekar said to attend the meeting was the decision of the legislative wing of his party. The AAP and Congress have decided to demand accountability from the BJP government on the floor of the House, he said, adding that a collective strategy was decided for the sake of the people of Goa. In a joint statement issued on Tuesday (July 15, 2025), AAP MLAs Viegas and Silva said, "United we stand for Goa's justice. For meaningful change in the assembly, AAP and opposition parties must align their political and legislative wings. Common political discipline and collective action should happen."

₹2,569 cr. worth development works to be launched at Sadhana Samavesha in Mysuru on July 19

Development works worth ₹2,569 crore for Mysuru city will be inaugurated and foundation stones will be laid on July 19 during Sadhana Samavesha in Mysuru, said Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa. Addressing a press conference after inspecting the arrangements at Maharaja College Grounds – the venue of the Samavesha - on Wednesday, Dr. Mahadevappa said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the works that have already been implemented and lay foundation stones for the new ones. 'All put together, the total value of the works is ₹2,569 crore,' he said. These works are in addition to development projects worth ₹2,493 crore that were either inaugurated or for which foundation stones were laid in the six taluks, including H.D. Kote, T. Narasipur, and Periyapatna, a few months ago, the Minister added. 'The Opposition claims the State has no money for development. If that is the case, how are these works being taken up? I can provide documents on the projects implemented and the amount spent,' he asserted. Dr. Mahadevappa said no other government has brought such large-scale development, particularly to Mysuru city. 'It is Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who has sanctioned maximum funds for the region,' he maintained. Key projects listed for the launch and laying foundation stones include ₹502 crore for white-topping and other works under PWD; ₹419 crore for an irrigation project at Heggadanahalli; ₹408 crore for underground electricity cabling by CESC; ₹330 crore for UGD works under Mysuru City Corporation; ₹192 crore for the Unity Mall at the exhibition grounds (State is providing only land to the Centre for the work), and ₹100 crore for new facilities at Mysore Medical College. He said AICC president Mallikarjuna Kharge has been invited to the Samavesha. On expanding K.R. Hospital with sharp increase in patient load, Dr. Mahadevappa said vertical development is possible only if building bylaws are altered, since high-rise structures are not permitted in the vicinity of the palace. 'The bylaws are under consideration,' he replied. He also acknowledged the increasing patient load at Jayadeva Institute in Mysuru, attributing it to lifestyle changes leading to rising health issues. The expansion of the facility will also be looked into, he added. Former Minister and MLA Tanveer Sait, MLA K. Harish Gowda, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, DCPs Sundar Raj and Bindu Rani, and local Congress leaders were present. Earlier, the Minister inspected the venue and spoke to the officials on the arrangements. Dr. Mahadevappa said nearly one lakh people are expected to attend the event.
