Vladimir Putin unleashed yet another round of bombardments on Ukraine – close to the borders of four Western nations – forcing Nato to scramble its warplanes.
It is the 13th time in a few weeks that the alliance has publicly admitted to deploying jets in response to a widespread Russian attack, but the number could be much higher.
Missiles and drones pounded the Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk – one of the heaviest attacks in the war – reaching between 60 and 105 miles from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.
For the past two months, Russia's nighttime strikes have strained Ukraine's air defences, and last night was no different.
At least one person has been killed and seven others injured in Kyiv, where its 3.7 million residents are exhausted and on edge.
Explosions lit up the night sky as the high-pitched whine of drone engines echoed off the walls of the capital's high-rise buildings.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescuers and medics were working on sites in four districts.
A subway station in central Kyiv, commercial property, shops, houses and a kindergarten have been heavily damaged.
Footage shows the Lukianivska metro station filling with smoke and debris as residents who were shielded inside the makeshift bomb shelter scrambled for safety.
Ukraine's air force said that Russia launched 426 drones and 24 missiles overnight across the country, but that only 23 drones hit their targets.
At the scene of a strike, dazed residents stood amid shattered glass and scorched walls, surveying the damage after a drone hit the lower floors of an apartment building.
In the region of Ivano-Frankivsk, several hundred miles west of Kyiv, four people including a 12-year-old boy were injured in the overnight attack, according to the state emergencies service.
Attack drones were also intercepted over the regions of Sumy, Kirovohrad, Khmelnytskyi, Mykolaiv, Poltava, and Kherson. More Trending
Volodymyr Zelensky said on X: 'Throughout the night, Russia launched more than 420 drones and over 20 missiles, including ballistic ones.
'The waves of attacks lasted all night and continued into the morning. In the morning, 'shaheds' once again targeted the Kharkiv region.
'During the shelling, mobile fire groups, army aviation, electronic warfare units, Air Force warriors, and interceptor drones were in action.
'Many targets were shot down – but unfortunately, not all.'

EastEnders horror in early iPlayer release as a knife is pulled on major local

This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs on BBC One at 7.30pm or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Oscar Branning (Pierre Moullier) has turned on one of his own with a knife. As viewers of the soap know, the newbie is in hot water with some vicious thugs, after he tipped off the police about their involvement in the car robbery. The group's ringleader Mike (Tai Hilferink) had tried to petrol bomb Oscar's home, mistakenly targeting the neighbours instead. As a result he was kicked out by mum Tanya (Jo Joyner) and has settled in Albert Square since being released from a youth detention centre. So far he's proved himself to be quite the troublemaker; trying to scam Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), flirting with just about every man or woman he's crossed, and causing undue stress for his sister Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) and her fiancé Peter Beale (Thomas Law). After discovering that his nephew Jimmy is visually impaired, fans saw a softer side to Oscar, who later volunteered to babysit his two nephews. Disaster struck when Mike let himself into the house, leaving a large kitchen knife jammed in the chopping board as a warning of what he was capable of. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video In today's episode, Lauren found out about the altercation. Louie, who had spotted Mike chatting with Oscar, asked if he was going to return again soon. A troubled Oscar was then forced to explain what had happened, and promised his sister that her sons weren't in danger. Later, after heading to the market for a shift, he spotted Mike and his mate Harrison lurking in the shadows. Knowing that it was high time this stopped, he pulled the lads to one side and tried to find a solution. Harrison swooped in from behind and punched him in the stomach, with Mike lifting a brick over Oscar's head. Luckily, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) rushed to his defence, but the violence didn't end there. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? Russia's night attack wounds eight in Kyiv, Ukraine says

KYIV, July 28 (Reuters) - A Russian overnight air attack wounded eight residents of an apartment building in Kyiv, including a three-year-old child, authorities said on Monday, while the Ukrainian air force said a town hosting a key air base had been attacked. Four of those injured in the capital were admitted to hospital with one in serious condition, the head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on Telegram. Ukraine's air force said Russia had launched 324 drones and seven missiles overnight, and that their main target was Starokostyantyniv in western Ukraine, home to a major air base. It said 15 drones and two missiles had hit targets in three locations, but did not specify where. Russia invaded its neighbour three and a half years ago. Its repeated night-time air attacks, sometimes involving hundreds of drones, are often accompanied by a handful of missiles to try to overwhelm air defences. The capital and most of Ukraine were under air raid alerts for several hours overnight. Polish aircraft were also scrambled to ensure the safety of national airspace. Those wounded in Kyiv were residents of a multi-storey apartment building in the Darnytskyi district, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. The full scale of the Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. There was no comment from Russia. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war. However, thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.
