How we got our job as... Co-founders of the luxury fashion label Yvon

Emirates Woman12-05-2025
This week we chat with Karina Ross and Almira Shnaider, Co-Founders of the luxury fashion label Yvon.
Welcome to the Emirates Woman weekly series 'How I got my job as…' where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they'd give to those starting out; and the hurdles they've had to overcome.
Founded on a deep friendship and a shared creative vision, Karina and Almira began their journey in Kazan before launching Yvon, a brand inspired by Parisian elegance and the transformation of femininity. Since its inception, Yvon has grown into a name synonymous with refined silhouettes, timeless detail, and an enduring connection to nature – each dress inspired by a flower from a meaningful book the duo found together in Paris. With a presence in Dubai and a focus on international expansion, the brand continues to evolve with each collection.
To delve into their story, Emirates Woman spoke to the co-founders to see how their journey in the fashion world began.

A post shared by (@yvonthelabel) What was your favourite subject at school?
KR: Mathematics. I was passionate about its precision and beauty. I had a sense that it could reveal the truth behind everything – like solving an eternal riddle.
AS: Mine was geometry, a subject that blends logic with the ability to visualise and express it through drawing. I remember diligently sketching figures in my notebook. What was your first job?
KR: I earned my first money at 18, working as a nightclub photographer. During that time, I was scouted by a modelling agency in Russia – a moment that shifted my path from behind the camera to in front of it, marking the beginning of my journey in the fashion industry.
AS: I dreamed of becoming a flight attendant since childhood. Growing up with a father who was a pilot, I was always fascinated by the world of aviation. Watching him travel the world and hearing his stories ignited a deep passion. I turned that dream into reality and worked as a flight attendant for four years. What brought you to Dubai?
KR: I signed a contract with an agency in Dubai, fell in love with the city and made it my home. My love to Dubai never vanished.
AS: 'Karina was actually the one who brought me to Dubai, and now I split my time between Kazan and Dubai. Talk us through your daily routine?
KR:My daily routine is rarely the same – it's easier to talk about my monthly routine. I travel a lot for work, directing marketing campaigns twice a month all over the world. My constants include daily calls with the YVON team, staying active, and dinners with friends. The only thing that's truly consistent is my morning coffee.
AS: My day begins with a glass of water, a cup of coffee, and checking my messages. I shower, make breakfast for my son, drop him off at kindergarten, then listen to my favourite songs – usually singing along – before working out and heading to the office to focus on YVON production. In the afternoon, I pick him up, we grab his favourite cake, then have dinner and wind down at home. I light a candle, pour a glass of wine, read a book, shower, and start again. On Fridays, I have a small tradition of buying fresh flowers for the house. What inspired you to launch Yvon?
KR: Almira and I first met 10 years ago at a French café in our hometown of Kazan. Shortly after, we travelled together on our first trip to Milan, and from that point on, an everlasting friendship began. Soon after, we visited Paris together. The charm and beauty of the city became an endless source of inspiration – the inspiration to create a brand.
AS: We felt a desire, a need, to do something of our own. A vision started to take shape. We wanted to create a brand that stands for beauty and quality. Clothes with a perfect fit for everyone, in every size.

A post shared by (@yvonthelabel) Talk us through the concept and where the name Yvon comes from?
KR: Originally, YVON was an old French male name that only recently began to be used for women. Our dresses reflect that very transformation – strong on the inside, feminine on the outside. What are the key elements of your role?
KR: We've split our roles. While Almira handles production, development, fabric, and hardware selection, I'm responsible for marketing, social media, PR, and all visual components.
AS: We trust each other's decisions 100 percent. There's very little interference in each other's work, which really boosts our efficiency and creates a great working environment. What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
KR: Passion, patience, and endurance.
AS: Don't do it unless you're prepared to make a lot of sacrifices. Tell us more about the pieces?
KR: A book with 400 different flowers was our starting point for creating a dress – a book we bought together on our first trip to Paris. In that sense, everything began with Paris and still connects back to it. Every time we create a collection; Almira selects a flower from that very same book to match each dress.

A post shared by (@yvonthelabel) What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
KR: Beauty is the power that comes from a free decision. And what is the worst?
AS: Don't go into business with your best friend. What's the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?
KR: Balancing family and business at the same time.
AS: 'The temptation to give up will be strongest right before victory.' What's lies ahead for the brand?
KR: We're focused on expanding our presence in the U.S. and European markets, while also growing our product portfolio with a wider range of accessories to better meet customer needs. – For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and Instagram

The shift to social media-first campaign thinking

The shift to social media-first campaign thinking

We used to think of campaigns as singular, well-defined launches. The big idea came first, followed by a carefully structured plan: a hero visual, a strong copy line, a timeline of deliverables. Media teams did their magic. The ad went live. Social media? It got the leftovers. Fast forward to 2025, that entire approach has flipped. Today, social media is not the final stop, it's the first spark. It's where the brand is born in the minds of the audience. It's where the first impression happens. Where the reaction happens. And increasingly, where the relationship begins. Whether you're in branding, media, visual communications, or marketing strategy, one thing is clear: If your campaign doesn't live and breathe on social media, it doesn't live at all. It's time to stop referring to social media as just 'a platform' or 'a channel.' That's outdated thinking. Social media is now the primary environment where audiences interact with brands. Think about your own habits. Where did you last learn about a new product? Probably on Instagram or TikTok. Where do you check for real-time reactions to a launch or a trend? Twitter (well, X). Where do behind-the-scenes stories, unfiltered opinions, and cultural shifts emerge first? You guessed it: social media. It's no longer a place where campaigns go to get exposure. It's the place where brands are evaluated. Either accepted, rejected, or meme-ed into the void (by me). What does social media first mean in practice? Well Here's my take : We throw the term around a lot, but here's what it really means: It means building ideas for the feed and not repurposing from a master file. It means writing headlines that hook in two seconds not waiting until line three to get to the point. It means designing visual systems that are responsive, scrollable, thumb-stopping and not just 'on-brand.' It means building flexibility into your idea so it can evolve with culture, not fight against it. The most successful brands today aren't the ones with the most polished assets, they're the ones that know how to show up in people's daily lives with the right energy, tone, timing, and purpose. Social media-first also means audience first We often talk about being audience-centric in advertising, but social media makes that unavoidable. Because here's the thing: social media doesn't care about your creative rationale. It doesn't care about your strategy deck. It doesn't even care about your logo. What social media does care about is relevance. Is this worth my time? Is this made for me? Is this adding something, or just talking at me? And audiences, especially Gen Z and Gen Alpha, are not passive consumers. They curate their feeds. They mute, unfollow, block. They meme bad ads into oblivion. They participate in culture and expect brands to do the same, not just observe it from a distance. Transparency: the not-so-secret sauce A social media-first approach inevitably requires transparency because audiences now expect to see the 'how,' not just the 'what.' Gone are the days of hiding behind polished campaigns and corporate-speak. The rise of creators, UGC, live content, and behind-the-scenes storytelling has made one thing clear: People trust people. Not perfect messaging. Transparency isn't just a buzzword, it's a brand value expressed in real time. It looks like: Credit given to the people who actually made the work, not just the agency. Showcasing the process (even the messy bits), not just the result. Letting real employees, not just actors speak on behalf of the brand. Addressing feedback openly instead of dodging it with vague statements. Admitting when something didn't go as planned and showing what you're doing about it. In short: vulnerability builds credibility. Rhode – Born social, acquired by e.l.f. for $1Bn Here's proof that social media-first isn't just a creative trend, It's a powerful brand currency. What happened? In May 2025, e.l.f. Beauty closed a multi-channel acquisition of Hailey Bieber's beauty brand, Rhode, for $1bn, $800M upfront in cash and stock, plus up to $200 M in earn outs. Why it matters? Rhode launched in June 2022 and soared to $212M in annual revenue within three years all direct-to-consumer, with zero reliance on traditional retail until the acquisition was announced. How Rhode leveraged social-first thinking Founder-led storytelling: Hailey Bieber, already a mass influencer with ~55M Instagram and ~15M TikTok followers used authentic skincare conversations, unfiltered routines and makeup snippets to build trust from day one. View this post on Instagram A post shared by rhode skin (@rhode) Platform-native content: Rhode leaned into the 'clean girl' skincare trend with real, behind-the-scenes posts that felt like advice from a friend, not a brand. Culture-first strategy: Its social media game led Rhode to top the Earned Media Value charts in 2024, growing 367 per cent year-over-year. This proves that a social-first approach isn't just marketing, it's brand-building. Rhode didn't just use social, they were social. And because of that, e.l.f. saw real value, not just numbers on a P&L. Key takeaways Social-first can drive billion-dollar exits. Rhode's valuation wasn't based on retail distribution or traditional advertising; it was built on audience, trust, and engagement. Founder voice is powerful. Authentic, topic-led storytelling from real people (not faceless brands) can outperform big-budget campaigns. Platform-native storytelling win. Rhode understood TikTok and Instagram natively; it didn't push brand content, it joined conversations. Transparency translates to value. Real routines, honest messaging, and visible product philosophy became core Rhode assets recognised in the deal. The creative implications of a social-first world. This shift has big implications for how creative teams work: – Pace: Campaigns no longer roll out in neat phases, they evolve in real time. – Format: Master assets are less important than modular, remix-able content. – Collaboration: Social teams, creatives, strategists, and media must work together, not in silos. – Measurement: Success is no longer about impressions, it's about attention, participation, and resonance. As someone working across visual communication and social media, I've seen this first-hand. The best creative ideas now are the ones that: Start with the platform in mind Plan for multiple outcomes Use audience behaviour as insight, not just data Aren't afraid to be scrappy when it makes sense So what now? We're not saying traditional campaigns are dead. There's still space for hero films, out-of-home takeovers, brand launches, and beautifully polished visuals. But they can't live in isolation anymore. In a world where the feed is the front door, your campaign has to work there first before it ever makes its way to a billboard or press release. Social-first thinking is not just about platform strategy, it's about creative integrity in the real world. Because attention isn't something you buy anymore. It's something you earn, one post, one interaction, one real moment at a time. What this means for creatives, marketers and teams This shift impacts every part of how we work: Creative direction – Concepts must live in small, adaptable pieces, not just polished master visuals. Branding – Logos, typefaces, and colour palettes need to flex across digital environments. Storytelling – Narratives must unfold in seconds, or risk never being seen. Team collaboration – Social media isn't just for community managers, it's a creative space that touches every part of the brand. More importantly, it means listening. To the audience. To trends. To the cultural temperature. Not everything needs to be reactive. But everything must be responsive. By Sara Hamaideh, Content Lead, 5th Element
