In Just Seven Days, Ahaan Panday And Aneet Padda's Saiyaara Becomes The Surprise Success Story Of 2025

NDTV25-07-2025
New Delhi:
What do you get when you combine a debutant hero, a dreamy love story and a filmmaker who hasn't dabbled in box office records in a while? Apparently, a full-blown blockbuster.
When Saiyaara released on July 18, not many outside the industry knew what to expect. Ahaan Panday, stepping into the limelight for the first time, and Aneet Padda, still early in her career, were not exactly household names.
Yet, within days, theatres across India began buzzing with an energy rarely seen for romantic dramas anymore, especially those without an established superstar on the poster.
And now, barely a week into its run, Saiyaara is not just being watched, it's being witnessed. It's the kind of theatrical phenomenon fans can call their own, a film that's making them weep, cheer and, more importantly, return to theatres in numbers that even the biggest franchises haven't managed this year.
The Romance That Set The Box Office On Fire
Directed by Mohit Suri and backed by Yash Raj Films, Saiyaara has become one of the most exhilarating success stories of 2025. Right from Day 1, the film signalled a seismic shift in audience sentiment.
With an impressive Rs 21 crore opening in India, the romantic drama set a new benchmark for debutant-led films, easily surpassing the previous record held by Dhadak (Rs 8.76 crore). But it didn't stop there. The opening weekend alone brought in approximately Rs 84.5 crore nett, earning it a spot in the Top 5 opening weekends of the year.
The fact that a romantic film, without any marquee stars, crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in India within the opening weekend is no small feat.
It now officially holds the record for the highest opening weekend for a Hindi romantic film, ahead of the likes of Kabir Singh, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and T eri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. These weren't just overtaken; they were outpaced by a film that didn't even crack the top three on most trade prediction lists.
Another feather in Saiyaara's cap is how efficiently it has been distributed. Despite having just 8,000 screenings across India, less than half the number some commercial films receive, it managed to sell nearly 10 lakh tickets on Day 1 alone.
Advance bookings were equally robust, raking in Rs 9.39 crore before release. In major chains like PVR INOX and Cinepolis, tickets flew off the counters, with many shows running housefull through the weekend.
One Of The Best Openings Of The Year
What makes Saiyaara's journey even more astonishing is the consistency it has shown throughout the week. After a spectacular opening weekend, the film continued its march with daily collections hovering in the Rs 20-25 crore range.
On Day 7, even as it dipped slightly to Rs 18.75 crore, it still outperformed most releases from this year, including star-led vehicles like Kesari Chapter 2 and Metro In Dino. Its total India nett collection for the first week stands at Rs 172.5 crore.
Occupancy rates reflected this unrelenting momentum. Morning shows opened at 19.74%, climbing steadily through the day and peaking at over 40% during night shows.
Second-Highest Week 1 Collection Of 2025
By the end of its first week, Saiyaara comfortably secured its spot as the second-highest opening week grosser of 2025, just behind the historical action drama Chhaava, which earned approximately Rs 219.25 crore in its first seven days.
Saiyaara, with its Rs 172.5 crore nett, stands ahead of high-budget, star-studded releases like Housefull 5 (Rs 127.25 crore), Sikandar (Rs 115 crore) and Sky Force (Rs 99.7 crore).
Notably, it also beat the week-one collection of Raid 2, starring Ajay Devgn, which had reached around Rs 95.75 crore and Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par (Rs 88.46 crore).
Even overseas, Saiyaara is performing exceptionally well. Its global box office total crossed Rs 248 crore by the end of the first week, Rs 205 crore gross from India and an additional Rs 43.25 crore from international markets.
Ahaan Panday's Debut Is Anything But Quiet
In terms of pure star-making moments, few launches in recent memory have had the kind of impact that Ahaan Panday's debut is having.
Within a week, trade insiders are already calling this the most successful male debut since Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.
Ahaan's first film has already outgrossed the debut films of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra (Student of the Year) and even his cousin Ananya Panday (Student of the Year 2).
Romance Isn't Dead, It's Just Called Saiyaara
If 2025 marks the revival of Bollywood romance, Saiyaara is its undisputed flag-bearer. Earlier this year, re-releases of cult hits like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Sanam Teri Kasam drew surprising crowds. But Saiyaara has gone several steps further; it didn't rely on nostalgia, it created its own legacy in real-time.
The Bottom Line
With Rs 172.5 crore in India nett and Rs 248 crore worldwide in just 7 days, Saiyaara currently stands at No. 2 on the list of highest first-week grossers of 2025 and is well on its way to joining the Rs 300 crore club, if current trends hold.
In a year packed with sequels, spy universes and testosterone-fuelled actioners, Saiyaara has proved that a simple, soulful love story with the right packaging and performances can still reign supreme. And somewhere, amid all the data and broken records, is a wide-eyed debutant who just rewrote the rules of the game.

‘Ghich Pich' review: A modest, diverting coming-of-age film

It's rare to see architecturally attuned Hindi films. Basu Chatterjee in the '70s had an eye for it. Last year, Atul Sabharwal's Berlin used Brutalist buildings to suggest forbidding bureaucracy. I wouldn't go as far as to say architecture informs Ankur Singla's Ghich Pich, but the film is alive to it. Every now and then, a deliberate framing will dwarf the characters and call attention to the building in the back. It's a welcome strategy. Why set your film in Chandigarh if you're not going to use Le Corbusier's creations? You can tell Singla grew up in the city. His vision of Chandigarh in 2001 feels unforced but specific, a series of quick, confident sketches rather than a laboured recreation. The central trio, fast friends and classmates in high school, are deftly drawn too. Anurag (Aryan Singh Rana) is a promising student, the one likeliest to make the jump to a metro like Delhi. Gurpreet (Kabir Nanda) is a sad sack who spends all his time thinking of ways to impress classmate Ashima. Gaurav (Shhivam Kakar) mostly gets in trouble at school, content with a future working in his doting father's eyewear store. Ghich Pich soon presents a dilemma for each boy involving their fathers (it would pair nicely with Varun Grover's 2023 film, All India Rank, about a student in coaching and his parents back home). Gurpreet, desperate to make an impression on Ashima, wants to cut his hair, something his mild, religious father can't come to terms with. Anurag's father has no problem saying no, as he alternately berates and exhorts the boy to 'jump an orbit', study hard enough that he qualifies for Delhi university (it feels like an unnecessary detail that there's always an alcohol bottle around during his lectures). Gaurav's relationship with his dad is a more delicate situation, a glimpse of something the simple-minded kid just can't process. 'Ghich pich' is a colloquial Hindi term which could translate as 'confused' or 'illegible'. But while there might be some ghich pich in the minds of the three boys, the film is clear-cut. Running an almost unheard-of 92 minutes, it moves methodically from one boys' story to the next. This somewhat episodic approach, paired with colour grading that's occasionally an approximation of late '80s-early '90s parallel films, made me think of old shows like Hum Log and Nukkad, which had stories like Gurpreet's and Anurag's, if not Gaurav's. In his first film as director, Singla seems happy to try and make something uncomplicated and resonant. I think he recognises he isn't technically proficient yet, and accordingly opts for a linear structure and simple, efficient shot-making and assembly. There's the occasional flourish—an impromptu dhol session for three that turns into a roadside rave—but nothing that sticks in the mind. This plain, almost drab, style offers plenty of room for the actors to shine. Of the three boys, I particularly liked Rana's watchful turn as Anurag, who comes alive with his friends but is walking on eggshells at home. As the fascist father, Satyajit Sharma is almost too harsh for this gentle film; Nishan Cheema's hurt Sikh patriarch is more its tempo. But the sweetest work comes from the late Nitesh Pandey and Geeta Agrawal Sharma as Gaurav's parents. You can sense from their scenes together and with their confused son how these two have managed to hold onto a loving relationship despite all the challenges. Monsoon Wedding (2001), a big influence on the Hindie film till this day, is referenced by Singla. Ghich Pich might aspire to be like Mira Nair's film (it ends similarly, various conflicts resolved or faced up to before a climatic Punjabi dance number). But this is a much more modest undertaking—and is all the better for it. Ghich Pich makes no great demands on the viewer, and no great claims for itself. Like the gedis the boys love to go out on, it's unrehearsed, diverting and over before you know it.

Dhadak 2 box office collection Day 7: Siddhant Chaturvedi-Triptii Dimri's romantic drama earns its lowest amount ever at Rs 1 crore

Dhadak 2 box office collection Day 7: Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri starrer Dhadak 2 hit the theatres recently. However, the film failed to draw crowds to the theatres, despite the positive word of mouth. The Hindi remake of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal was expected to break records like Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's latest romantic blockbuster, but the box office numbers have been underwhelming till now. According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, Dhadak 2 earned Rs 1 crore on the seventh day of release, which is its lowest amount ever. The total India net collection of the first week now stand at Rs 16.44 crore. The film recorded Rs 3.5 crore on its first day, and witnessed slight growth over the first weekend, with Sunday being the highest earning day at Rs 4.15 crore. However, the movie faced a dip again on Monday. On day 7 (Thursday) at the box office, Dhadak 2 had an overall 12.00% Hindi occupancy, with morning shows at 8.40%, afternoon shows at 13.99%, evening shows standing at 10.92%, and night shows at 14.68%. Dhadak 2 is facing touch competition from sevral other releases – Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur starrer Son of Sardaar 2, the devotional animated film Mahavatar Narsimha, and Mohit Suri's record-breaking romantic drama Saiyaara. In fact, Son of Sardaar 2 has overshadowed Dhadak 2 in its first week of release. Given that there are no new releases this Friday, Dhadak 2 has this weekend to show growth. ALSO READ | Dhadak 2: Shazia Iqbal destroys ancient Bollywood Dharma in the best Karan Johar production since Jigra An excerpt from SCREEN's review of Dhadak 2 read, 'The film doesn't draw back from scenes set in squalor, even if those visuals come wrapped in a Neelesh's outburst as he 'introduces' Vidhi to his lived reality — look, that neighbour is a sweeper in homes, that one cleans gutters. We aren't shown the people up close ; they are blurs in the distance. A romance flowers between the two, but the passion feels a trifle performative. Coming off from 'Saiyaara' where the two young lovers burn up the screen, about the only really effective thing about that film, you feel this even more intensely. Individually, though, both make us watch, and in some places, Dimri more than Chaturvedi.' Produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, Zee Studios and Cloud 9 Pictures, the film is a spiritual sequel to the first part Dhadak, which was released in 2018. Also starring Zakir Hussain, Saurabh Sachdeva, Deeksha Joshi, Vipin Sharma, Saad Bilgrami and Harish Khanna, it focuses on the sensitive topic of casteism.
