Eddie Palmieri dead: Eight-time Grammy award-winning legend dies
The musician, who was a trailblazer in the rumba and Latin jazz genres, enjoyed a illustrious career which spanned 70 years and saw him win eight Grammy Awards.
Eddie died at his home in New Jersey on Wednesday. He became the first Latino to win a Grammy Award in 1975 and went on to have an impressive career.
The musician was dubbed the "Madman of Salsa". Eddie saw his career reach new heights in the 1980s when he was regarded as a global ambassador for Latin Jazz, having toured the world.
The albums Palo pa' rumba (1984) and Solito (1985) won the musician two more Grammy Awards as Eddie, from New York City, pioneered the genres.
Founder of the bands La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive, he continued to make music and entertain into his 80s, and determinedly performed through the coronavirus pandemic via livestreams.
In a 2011 interview, when asked if he had anything important left to do, the humble star responded: "Learning to play the piano well. ... Being a piano player is one thing. Being a pianist is another."
Fania Records also confirmed Eddie's death as they described the pianist, composer and bandleader as a music legend. Recalling his early days, the agent said Eddie learned to play both the piano and the timbale drums in his teens.

Beyonce is now halfway to coveted EGOT status after earning a milestone win this week. Over the course of her nearly 30-year career, the superstar, 43, has won a historic 35 Grammy Awards — the most ever for a recording artist or group. And on Tuesday, it was revealed that Beyonce has finally earned her first-ever Emmy Award after 12 nominations. The mother-of-three and the team behind Netflix 's Beyonce Bowl special, which aired in December 2024, won in the Outstanding Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming category, according to E! Online. Also sharing in the Emmy glory is Beyonce Bowl costume designer, Shiona Turini, as well as the show's costume supervisor, Chelsea Staebell, head of workroom, Timothy White, and assistant costume designers, Erica Rice and Molly Peters. The honor will be awarded to Beyonce and her team during the 2025 Creative Arts Emmys, which will occur one week prior to the Primetime Emmy Awards, on Sunday, September 7 in Los Angeles. Beyonce still has a chance to take home two more Emmys as Beyonce Bowl is also up for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, which will be announced at the Creative Arts Emmys, and Outstanding Variety Special, which is a Primetime Emmy Awards category. Beyonce Bowl — officially advertised as the NFL 2024 Christmas Day Halftime Show — premiered live on Netflix on December 25, 2024 during the game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. It was held at NRG Stadium in Beyonce's hometown of Houston, Texas. Produced by Beyonce's Parkwood Entertainment, the 13-minute show saw Beyonce perform numerous hits off her controversial, Grammy Award-winning country album, Cowboy Carter, which was released in April 2024. Fans feared for Beyonce's safety during her hometown show in Houston, Texas on June 29 when the red convertible she rides high above the crowd on during her performance of 16 Carriages tilted dangerously, threatening to throw the Cowboy Carter singer off the car and into the audience. Despite the scare, Beyonce returned to the main stage and finished the performance like the consummate professional she is. After the show, the superstar's team released a statement addressing the incident. 'Tonight in Houston, at NRG Stadium, a technical mishap caused the flying car, a prop Beyoncé uses to circle the stadium, and see her fans up close, to tilt. 'She was quickly lowered and no one was injured. The show continued without incident,' Parkwood Entertainment said.

After months of rumours and speculation, and with just weeks to go before this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing launches, the star-studded line-up is slowly being revealed. Gladiators star Nitro – whose real name is Harry Aikines-Aryeetey – was the first big name announced for the upcoming season, followed by Dani Dyer, Alex Kingston and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Soap actress Balvinder Sopal is set to join them and head to the dance floor, as she swaps Albert Square for the Argentine Tango. 'Being on Strictly is a dream that I held on to, with no proof that it would ever happen. Working on EastEnders and being a part of Strictly Come Dancing is the stuff that dreams are made of,' she said. 'I'm far too excited to put into words how I feel but I'm incredibly excited at the prospect of dancing across the ballroom!' She revealed she has already done ballroom and Latin dancing as a 'hobby'. 'I think when you've got a passion for something, you're naturally inclined to enjoy it. I'll enjoy it but I don't know if I'll be any good,' she said. Balvinder is an actress, who currently plays Suki Kaur Panesar-Unwin on BBC soap EastEnders. Balvinder was born on 4 December 1978, making her 46. Balvinder lives in Medway, Kent. 'I love where I come from. It's taken me a while to really appreciate how creatively diverse Medway and surrounding areas in Kent are. Sure, some places aren't as beautiful, affluent or full of rows of quaint little coffee shops, but it is full of heart, and it's where I grew up,' she said. 'It's where I come from.' Balvinder is not believed to be married in real life. Before joining EastEnders in January 2020, Balvinder has appeared on other soaps Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Doctors. Over her 20-year-long career on stage and screen, she has also been on Waterloo Road and Call The Midwife. But it's as villainous and protective matriarch Suki and the character's lesbian relationship with Eve Unwin (portrayed by Heather Peace), which fans called 'Sukeve', that she's made her name. 'I've always played downtrodden, submissive women, so to be out there and sort of the female version of Phil Mitchell, I think is great,' she said. Eve and Suki married in January, becoming the first lesbian couple to tie the knot on the show. The first celebrities for the Strictly Come Dancing's 2025 line-up have been confirmed. The BBC reality competition series hosted by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman is back for another year of jaw-dropping dance routines and emotional journeys for our cohort of famed contestants. Strictly has had a difficult couple of years after pros Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima were removed from the show (and replaced) after behavioural accusations from former partners came out against them. Earlier this month, the long-running series came under scrutiny once more with reports that two stars had used cocaine, and one veteran worker had been offered drugs at a party. Meanwhile, beloved pro Gorka Marquez confirmed he would not be competing this year, much to everyone's devastation, but would make a cameo in some of the group performances. Every time I think about it, they just go, so, yeah,' the actress who plays Suki in the soap said. 'I dabbled a little bit. I did ballroom and Latin as a kind of hobby, and I really love it. The BBC show confirmed three new names who will battle it out for the glitterball trophy, with Dani Dyer the first to walk out into the studio. How hard was it keeping this a secret? 'So hard,' Dani said on the show. 'Especially when there was speculation and stuff, people kept coming up to me, and I'm such a bad liar. I'm going to have to send so many apologies.' Alex Jones in the BBC One studio was clearly in shock when he appeared, saying she didn't think he would ever agree to it. The ex pro footballer said his four daughters were part of the reason he decided to sign on up to the show. The 53-year-old said from the red studio sofa: 'A few years ago, I would say the same, but I'm a father of all girls, and Strictly is part of our home life. I've got into it. I like the show, and let's have a go. 'Honestly, I have no idea what to expect. I have a little bit of rhythm.' Jimmy played for clubs including Leeds United, Atlético Madrid and Chelsea, carving out a prolific goal-scoring career in the Premier League and across Europe. Since retiring, Jimmy has become a familiar face in football punditry as well as a football club manager of clubs including Burton Albion and Northampton Town. He also served as an assistant coach for the England national team. Olympian and star of BBC's Gladiators, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, was the first famous face confirmed to grace the Strictly ballroom this autumn. The TV personality already took part in last year's Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special with pro-partner Nancy Xu and now he is back for round two. 'After the Christmas Special, it was so nice I just had to do it twice! I'm so excited to be part of the Strictly family this series and I'm ready to give it all I've got. 'I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track,' he said in a statement. The multi-gold-medal-winning Team GB sprinter was announced as Nitro in the high-stakes BBC gameshow in 2023. He will no doubt be bringing all his skills to the dance floor. If there is one thing Harry is used to, it's being the best of the best, not only competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics but also securing the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award in 2005 aged 17. Not to mention being a three-time European champion and two-time Commonwealth champion. So he'll be a force to be reckoned with on the dancefloor. As we eagerly await the full line-up, there is still plenty of speculation over who will be joining the confirmed names this year. There are a couple of celebrities who have come out at the top of the rumour mill – including Natalie Imbruglia, 50, and Delta Goodrem, 40, who are said to be in talks to join the show.
