Lorraine host steps in as WWII veteran bursts into tears over King Charles
Lorraine proved to be an emotional watch as 98-year-old war hero Joy Trew sobbed on-air after tribute
ITV's Lorraine witnessed an incredibly moving moment when Ranvir Singh welcomed 98-year-old Joy Trew, a World War II veteran who recently had a memorable encounter with King Charles III.
Joy started her service at just 17, becoming a WWII interceptor proficient in Morse Code, which she used to help disrupt Nazi communications and derail Adolf Hitler and his German army plans.
Decades on from her wartime efforts, King Charles honoured Joy by inviting her to the VE Day celebrations and seating her alongside himself and Queen Camilla in London.
The sincere recognition moved Joy to tears during her appearance on Lorraine as she recounted the cherished experience to Ranvir.
Emotions heightened further when British historian Dr Tessa Dunlop joined the segment to surprise Joy with a sparkling award for her pivotal role in obtaining vital intelligence during the war, reports Edinburgh Live.
As Dr Tessa revealed the honour on the show, an overwhelmed Joy wept, prompting Ranvir to comfort the emotional veteran.
Additionally, Dr Tessa bestowed upon Joy a certificate from Prime Minister Keir Starmer, bearing a special acknowledgment: "From the Government Code and Cipher School, we also have a commemorative badge."
Dr Tessa elaborated on the significance of the award, saying: "You should have had this years ago, but we didn't know about you, and it says on the back, 'We also serve'," highlighting the long-overdue recognition of Joy's service.
Ranvir shared a touching moment with Joy, expressing gratitude by saying: "Joy, thank you so much for everything you did for us. We are all so proud of you."
Emotions ran high in the studio as Joy struggled to hold back tears, prompting Ranvir to offer a comforting embrace and say: "You're going to get me going in a minute."
The mood turned reflective when it was mentioned that Joy shared a special moment with King Charles and other senior members of the Royal Family earlier.
They greeted people from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, witnessing the Red Arrows soar overhead on May 5, commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The commemorations continued with a military parade, where Nato allies marched alongside the 1,300-strong contingent of UK armed forces. King Charles gave a salute as the troops passed the Queen Victoria Memorial.
Despite breaking away from the recent spate of hot weather, the day remained extraordinary. King Charles made sure Joy stayed warm, cosily wrapping her up in a blanket as they joined in the historical celebrations.

Where Soldier, Soldier cast are now - booze battles, affairs and tragic death
Soldier, Soldier was a huge TV hit in the 90s and made stars of Robson Green and Jerome Flynn who went on to have a number one hit and huge success in Hollywood Soldier, Soldier star Marise Wipani has tragically died aged 61. The actress, who also appeared in Xena: Warrior Princess, died on her birthday on Friday. Her Facebook page announced the news of her death in a sad message to friends and family. It read: "Marise passed peacefully today on her 61st birthday surrounded by family and friends. "She just wanted to say....I have shuffled off this mortal coil. Good byyye, good luuuck, good God!!! Quote from Driving Miss Daisy." Her cause of death was not shared in the post. ITV's Soldier, Soldier was a massive telly hit in the 90s, captivating viewers with its fictional insight into the ups and downs of the British Army. Set within the made-up 1st Battalion The King's Fusiliers regiment, it delved into the professional and personal dramas of the show's ensemble. The standout stars were Robson and Jerome, who enjoyed a brief but significant music career, sparked by an episode where they performed Unchained Melody. With Simon Cowell's support, their rendition topped the charts for seven weeks and became 1995's best-selling single. They both exited the show in the fifth series, but it continued for another two seasons before wrapping up in December 1997. It ran for seven series and captured the nation's attention.
