Lorraine host steps in as WWII veteran bursts into tears over King Charles
ITV's Lorraine witnessed an incredibly moving moment when Ranvir Singh welcomed 98-year-old Joy Trew, a World War II veteran who recently had a memorable encounter with King Charles III.
Joy started her service at just 17, becoming a WWII interceptor proficient in Morse Code, which she used to help disrupt Nazi communications and derail Adolf Hitler and his German army plans.
Decades on from her wartime efforts, King Charles honoured Joy by inviting her to the VE Day celebrations and seating her alongside himself and Queen Camilla in London.
The sincere recognition moved Joy to tears during her appearance on Lorraine as she recounted the cherished experience to Ranvir.
Emotions heightened further when British historian Dr Tessa Dunlop joined the segment to surprise Joy with a sparkling award for her pivotal role in obtaining vital intelligence during the war, reports Edinburgh Live.
As Dr Tessa revealed the honour on the show, an overwhelmed Joy wept, prompting Ranvir to comfort the emotional veteran.
Additionally, Dr Tessa bestowed upon Joy a certificate from Prime Minister Keir Starmer, bearing a special acknowledgment: "From the Government Code and Cipher School, we also have a commemorative badge."
Dr Tessa elaborated on the significance of the award, saying: "You should have had this years ago, but we didn't know about you, and it says on the back, 'We also serve'," highlighting the long-overdue recognition of Joy's service.
Ranvir shared a touching moment with Joy, expressing gratitude by saying: "Joy, thank you so much for everything you did for us. We are all so proud of you."
Emotions ran high in the studio as Joy struggled to hold back tears, prompting Ranvir to offer a comforting embrace and say: "You're going to get me going in a minute."
The mood turned reflective when it was mentioned that Joy shared a special moment with King Charles and other senior members of the Royal Family earlier.
They greeted people from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, witnessing the Red Arrows soar overhead on May 5, commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The commemorations continued with a military parade, where Nato allies marched alongside the 1,300-strong contingent of UK armed forces. King Charles gave a salute as the troops passed the Queen Victoria Memorial.
Despite breaking away from the recent spate of hot weather, the day remained extraordinary. King Charles made sure Joy stayed warm, cosily wrapping her up in a blanket as they joined in the historical celebrations.

The comedian, 73, was previously one of the UK's top stars but his decades long career ended after the death of Stuart Lubbock in 2001 following a party at his Essex home. Yet he was plagued by another scandal five years when he later admitted possessing cocaine that was found in his pocket after police approached his car. A charge of being drunk and disorderly was withdrawn at the hearing. Despite the incidents, Michael has become an unlikely icon for Gen Z and is now a well-loved TikToker and YouTube vlogger. But in a recent video posted online, the star revealed he had been diagnosed with epilepsy which was caused by a mini stroke. Sharing a series of photos of him in a hospital, he penned: 'I developed epilepsy at 73... 'A mini stroke caused me to develop epilepsy where I have uncontrollable seizures. 'I suffer from cluster seizures, which affects a quarter of people with epilepsy. It means I have more than one, usually three individual seizures in a short period of time. 'It's scary because there's a 40% chance of going into epilepticus which causes brain damage and death without prompt medical attention. 'I've had several attacks this year and have emergency medication at home if I go into a seizure. It doesn't really affect my life otherwise, but it would be nice to talk with other sufferers on here about it.' DailyMail has contacted Michael's representative for comment. It comes after it was revealed that Michael 'could be earning £250k a year' after becoming unlikely social media star in shock comeback. PR expert Lynn Carratt has estimated he could be making more than £250,000 a year, thanks to his clips and collaboration with Sports Direct that could have made him £1,500 alone. A friend of Michael's told The Sun: 'Michael is having a great time. He lives to entertain people, and while he may not be getting the TV offers he once did, this way he gets to create his own content on his own terms. 'What started as a bit of a hobby online has now become a way of connecting with his fans again, flexing his funny bone and getting back to doing what he loves without the pressure and scrutiny that comes with being on the nation's TV screens every week.' In 2001, Stuart Lubbock lost his life in suspicious circumstances following a party at Barrymore's home. The 31-year-old father of two had met Barrymore in a club that evening, and returned to his house with eight others. He was found unresponsive in the pool, and pronounced dead later in hospital. A post-mortem examination showed he had suffered severe internal injuries, suggesting sexual assault. Police continue to believe he was raped and murdered. Despite years of investigation, no one has ever been charged, and his family are no closer to knowing what happened. Michael has always denied any knowledge of what happened. Stuart's father Terry, who campaigned tirelessly for justice and was a thorn in Michael's side, died in 2021 from cancer. He always believed that even if Barrymore, who fled the scene before police arrived, wasn't involved, he could have done more to bring closure to the family. Terry's dying wish was that the truth would one day emerge. For many years it was assumed Barrymore's career had died along with Stuart Lubbock. Dropped by ITV because his 'brand' had become so toxic (it had been plagued by drug and alcohol issues even before the pool night). There were a few attempts to regain the limelight, including an appearance on 2006's Big Brother and Dancing On Ice. His followers are treated to daily videos about what he eats in a day, his outfits, mini vlogs and Labubu unboxings. He says posting content on TikTok – which his fans see as 'wholesome' – is pretty much a full-time job. There were rumours of a new partner (he was photographed in Barcelona with a handsome younger man), his new life in Spain didn't work out. Katie proceeded to mention the 'Saints' who are 'genuine' and have 'helped her', before launching an attack on those who 'are not who they would have you believe they are'. 'They have a carefully managed image which must be exhausting to maintain,' she continued. 'Some Saints are fake. They play the victim and to succeed in life they need a villain… or at least a Sinner. Without the Sinner they don't get to be the Saint… 'As a Sinner – I sometimes get bored of these Saints. But maybe I should feel sorry for them, It must be such hard work having to pretend all the time.' Katie concluded: 'Anyway, all you Sinners keep your heads up and keep trying to be better. Mohamed Salah in tears as Liverpool fans sing Diogo Jota's name at Anfield
Mohamed Salah wiped away tears as he listened to Liverpool fans sing songs in tribute to Diogo Jota after the team's victory over Bournemouth at Anfield. Liverpool won 4-2 in the opening match of the Premier League season, with goals from Hugo Ekitike, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Salah getting their title defence off to a winning start. Jota died in a car crash along with brother Andre Silva in Spain on 3 July after a suspected tyre blowout. The tragedy occurred only 11 days after Jota, a 28-year-old father of three, had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso. Jota 's family were in attendance at Anfield on Friday night as Liverpool fans sang a rousing rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone, before a minute's silence was impeccably observed. A loud rendition of Jota's song was accompanied by banners commemorating the late forward, one of them in the Bournemouth end, in a gesture by the visiting fans. Mosaics were formed by fans in the Kenny Dalglish Stand and the Kop as Liverpool paid their own tribute. Chants of Jota's name continued to ring around the stadium as the game got underway, all players wearing black armbands, with fans singing his now immortalised 'Number 20' anthem. And afterwards, Salah stood in front of the Kop soaking in the moment as supporters sang Jota's name. "We know that this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game we have played since we lost Diogo and Andre,' Arne Slot had said in his pre-match programme notes. "As I have said previously, the tributes that have been paid throughout the football world, and especially within the LFC community, have been truly special, and I know that tonight we will come together to honour them once more.' Reds captain Virgil van Dijk added in his notes: 'It will be a very emotional occasion for everybody associated with the club, and especially for Diogo's wife, Rute, their children and his family, who will be in attendance this evening. 'They remain, of course, the most important people in all of this, and it is important that we as a club – players, staff, supporters – are there for them always, and that they know that they will always be loved and welcomed here at Anfield.' Liverpool retired Jota's No 20 shirt earlier this summer, with the Portuguese forward listed under 'Forever' on their website's squad list.
