Mass protest in Vijayawada against smart power meters and tariff hikes

The Hindu04-07-2025
A massive protest led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) erupted in Vijayawada on Friday against the installation of smart electricity meters and a steep increase in power tariffs. The CPI(M) activists gathered at the CPDCL headquarters, demanding the rollback of what they termed as 'corporate-driven reforms' that burden consumers.
Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) leaders Ch. Babu Rao and D. Kasinath accused the ruling TDP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government of betraying public trust by imposing ₹15,485 crore worth of adjustment charges within a year of coming to power, despite promises to reduce electricity costs. Protesters also denounced the forcible installation of smart meters, linking them to corporate interests, particularly Adani.
Mr. Babu Rao said: 'Over 50,000 petitions were submitted to CPDCL officials, who initially hesitated to receive them.' The petitions were collected from the public during the party's door to door campaign and padayatras. The protesters, including many women, displayed the petitions symbolically and raised slogans condemning the government's silence and double standards, he said, adding, the TDP, Jana Sena, and BJP, who had once opposed smart meters and filed court cases against them, are now enforcing them silently.
The CPIM leaders warned that smart meters, controlled remotely by private firms, would lead to inflated bills and 24/7 surveillance, calling them 'Adani bombs in every household.' They claimed that two crore existing meters were being replaced with prepaid smart meters, shifting financial burdens to the public while giving discounted rates to large corporations.
The CPI(M) vowed to escalate the agitation state-wide if the government failed to reverse its decisions. 'If they tamper with the people's electricity, they will lose their political power,' said Babu Rao, invoking the memory of the 2000 electricity movement. The protest ended with a call for public resistance and street-level action across Andhra Pradesh.

Delhi court defers decision on issuing notice to Robert Vadra in land deal case

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday deferred till August 2 the pronouncement of its decision on issuing a notice to businessman Robert Vadra, son-in-law of former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in connection with a money laundering case linked to a land deal in Haryana's Shikohpur. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), claiming that Vadra's Skylight Hospitality 'fraudulently' purchased 3.53 acres of land situated in the village of Shikohpur in Haryana's Gurugram district through 'false declaration'. The Rouse Avenue Courts, which was slated to deliver the verdict on Thursday, deferred the pronouncement till August 2. Last week, the trial court had reserved its order regarding the issuance of a notice to Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. During the hearing, advocate Zoheb Hossain, appearing for the ED, stated that the sale deed falsely declared a payment of Rs 7.5 crore, whereas in reality, no such payment was made. This amount was paid at a later stage to evade stamp duty, a fact that has been confirmed by key witnesses, added Hossain. Further, the federal anti-money laundering agency claimed that Vadra, 'through his personal influence', obtained a commercial license on the land purchased. As per the ED, the land was later sold to DLF at a higher price, and this aspect of the case is still under investigation. In April this year, Vadra was questioned in multiple rounds by the ED, during which his statement was also recorded. The land purchase deal in question was executed in February 2008 when Congress was at the helm in Haryana, and Bhupinder Singh Hooda was the Chief Minister. The mutation process, which usually takes months, was done the next day. Months later, Vadra received a permit to develop a housing society on the land, and the value of the plot increased. He sold it to DLF in June at Rs 58 crore. Suspecting the proceeds to be part of a money laundering scheme, the ED has been probing the trail behind the windfall gains. In October 2012, IAS officer Ashok Khemka (now retired), who was then posted as the Director General of Land Consolidation and Land Records-cum-Inspector-General of Registration of Haryana, cancelled the land purchase deal, citing procedural irregularities. Later in 2013, an in-house government panel gave a clean chit to both Vadra as well as DLF. When the BJP-led government came to power, an FIR was registered by the Haryana Police against former Chief Minister Hooda, Vadra, and others.

Arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh echoes in Parliament

Congress and its allies raised the arrest of three, including two nuns from Kerala, in Chhattisgarh over charges of alleged human trafficking and religious conversion, demanding their immediate release. At the Zero Hour, Alappuzha MP K.C. Venugopal argued sisters Preeta Mary and Vandana Francis of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate order were being kept in jail without any reason. He enumerated that the two nuns have been serving cancer patients, poor and deprived people, and offering palliative care. Mr. Venugopal further accused the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister of adhering to the Bajrang Dal's narrative. He urged the government to intervene and release the nuns immediately. BJP in Kerala has distanced itself from Bajrang Dal, terming the arrest a 'misunderstanding'. However, in parliament, Durg MP Vijay Baghel accused the two nuns of facilitating potential religious conversion. Enumerating the chain of events, he held one of the three women being escorted by the nuns was seen to be crying at the railway station and wanted to go back home. Apart from this issue, Lok Sabha conducted business as usual, taking questions related to communication, space, and other constituency-centric issues. In Rajya Sabha, the debate over Operation Sindoor continued with both Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, and Leader of the House, J.P. Nadda, making statements. 'We gave a message that we are now responding to Pakistani attack and we will keep responding. If that fighting has to stop, Pakistan must make a request and that request must come from the channel of Pakistan's Director-General of Military Operations,' said Mr. Jaishankar. Mr. Nadda alleged that the anti-terrorism policy of the previous Congress-led governments at the Centre had suffered due to their eagerness to appease Pakistan. Questioning the Congress's stand on counter-terrorism measures, Mr. Nadda asked the Opposition leaders to introspect about their responses to terror attacks when they were in power. 'The Army was the same, but there was no political will,' he claimed. Despite both denying any foreign interference in the Indo-Pak ceasefire, several Opposition members raised US's role in the outcome. They also urged the Centre to display humility and apologise to the Pahalgam victims' families. Today, Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution in Rajya Sabha to extend President's Rule in Manipur. He moved a similar motion in the lower House yesterday. The Upper house may also take up The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025 for discussion and passing. The Lok Sabha will discuss the The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025. Governors, Cabinet Stalwarts, Ex-CMs & RSS-Aligned Intellectuals: Decoding BJP's V-P Shortlist

Last Updated: With NDA holding a majority in the electoral college, BJP's pick is likely to be about shaping narrative through regional outreach, ideological clarity, or statesmanlike symbolism From Governors of opposition- or alliance-ruled states to heavyweight cabinet ministers, from former chief ministers to senior RSS-aligned intellectuals or functionaries—the BJP's shortlist for the next Vice-President of India is likely to showcase its wide strategic bench. Each category signals a different political calculation, which includes the party's political outreach, ideological assertion, parliamentary expertise, or generational transition. Among Governors, names like Tamil Nadu's RN Ravi, Thawar Chand Gehlot of Karnataka and Bihar's Arif Mohammad Khan stand out, News18 has learnt. Ravi has repeatedly made headlines for his confrontational stance with the DMK-led state government, embodying the BJP's assertive federal posture. Ravi served in the CBI and Intelligence Bureau and was also the deputy NSA. Post his retirement, he served his terms as Governor of Nagaland and Meghalaya along with his stint as an interlocutor for the talks between the government and the NSCN(IM). Khan, on the other hand, offers the party a unique blend of Muslim representation and reformist ideology, especially on matters like Triple Talaq and the Uniform Civil Code. Both bring ideological clarity with constitutional legitimacy. Former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, defence minister Rajnath Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla are seen as elder statesmen who can lend gravitas to the Vice-Presidential role without rocking the political boat. Also being discussed are a few veteran intellectuals from the extended Sangh Parivar ecosystem, individuals who may not have electoral baggage but carry ideological weight and public respect. With the NDA holding a decisive majority in the electoral college, BJP's choice is likely to be less about securing numbers and more about shaping the narrative through regional outreach, ideological clarity, or statesmanlike symbolism. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
