Glee's Darren Criss says he finds it 'easier' to star on Broadway than be a parent of two toddlers

Perth Now28-04-2025
Darren Criss finds it "easier" to star on Broadway than be a parent.
The 38-year-old actor has daughter Bluesy Bell - who turned three in mid-April - and son Brother László, 10 months, with wife Mia Swier and admitted that currently starring in 'Maybe Happy Ending' on The Great White Way several times a week is far less "ballistic and uncontrolled" than bringing up two toddlers.
Speaking on Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series, he said: "I have two kids under three. If I'm putting the jokes aside, it's the most beautiful arrangement because to have a schedule and be with my children all day is nice.
"I have to say, the show is the easiest part of my day, as a parent with two under three."
'The life of little ones is ballistic and uncontrolled.
"By the time you go to a show that's under two hours, it's sweet and measured. I don't envy our colleagues who are retching their souls out for three hours, eight times a week."
The former 'Glee' star previously noted that it had been a "blessing" to have everything in his professional life and his personal life fall into place at once and joked that he "thrived on the chaos" that brought the two together.
He told People: "It's a blessing to get all these things happening kind of all at once — personal, home stuff happening among the same fun, prosperity and excitement that is existing in my professional life — there's something that's very invigorating about that.
"So I'm rockin' and rollin'. Chaos begets chaos. And I, for better or worse, tend to thrive on a bit of chaos."
Despite his success, Darren previously admitted that he still got "nervous" before every performance.
He told UsWeekly; "I think someone told me once that being nervous means you care. So that's always good. I'm nervous, but not for the reasons you would think. It's for the desire to really nail things.
"Performers tend to make these arbitrary goalposts that you have to hit in order to feel good about a performance, but it's a complete delusion. Those aren't real. You know, every show, as long as you can hit 75 percent of the things you want to hit, usually that's gonna be 100 percent of an experience for the audience."

Alison Brie was 'anti-marriage' until she met Dave Franco

Alison Brie's "anti-marriage" stance was a "solid part" of her "identity" until she met Dave Franco. The Mad Men star, 42, fell for fellow actor Dave when they met during Mardi Gras in New Orleans and they went on to tie the knot in 2017 - and Alison now admits meeting her partner changed her mind about marriage because she'd previously vowed never to walk down the aisle. She told The Sunday Times newspaper: "Being anti-marriage was once a solid part of my identity and I vowed it would never get in the way of my creative pursuits. "My parents are wonderful but they divorced and I didn't have many examples of happily married adults. "Dave flipped some kind of switch in me. I suddenly felt this deep pull to make a commitment. I know it's only rings and a bit of paper but you're telling the world that this matters. We're in for the long haul." Alison also insisted she doesn't want to have children because she's kept busy by the couple's two cats, but she's not ruling anything out. She added: "In the past I said I didn't want to have kids and that's still the case. My career is paramount. "Anyway, we have two new cats ... and they are our babies. But, hey, I'm only 42. Never say never." Dave proposed during a trip to Big Sur in California and he put a lot of effort in to make sure the moment was just right - even wearing a Mardi Gras mask from their first meeting in New Orleans. He told Variety: "We were going to Big Sur, one of our favourite places on Earth. I decided I was going to do it there ... "The day before the trip, I figured I should have a placeholder ring so I could at least put something on her finger. "I went to an antiques store down the street from us and got what I thought was a cool, old ring. "We first met at Mardi Gras in New Orleans years ago, and Alison had this silver mask on her head the entire weekend. I had written my phone number on the mask, and at the end of the trip, I took it and hid it. She didn't know I'd kept the mask all these years." Alison continued: "He calls me out onto the patio. I turn around and Dave's on one knee in a Zorro mask, holding a weird box with an old rock in it. I had no idea what was going on."

Anthony Mackie was 'proud' to call Malcolm-Jamal Warner a friend

Anthony Mackie felt "proud" to call Malcolm-Jamal Warner a friend. The 46-year-old actor hailed the late Cosby Show star - who drowned while on a family vacation in Costa Rica last month - a "beautiful human being" who he always treasured spending time with. He told People magazine: 'I'm proud to say Malcom-Jamal Warner was a friend of mine. He's somebody that I knew and spent time with, and just was such a beautiful human being. 'And every time I was around him, I was able to take full advantage of those conversations and that time. That, for me, is the most important thing." The Captain America: The Winter Soldier actor also spoke of how much he valued having late actor and "icon" Andre Braugher as a mentor before he died of lung cancer aged 61 in December 2023. She said: 'Being in New York and that new kid on the theater scene. To have those lessons and those moments and have that communicated [by] such — at that time for me — such an icon in the business. 'I always tell people just take full advantage of those moments [with mentors] and truly be yourself so that that person can see, react and engage with who you are and not some fictitious idea of who you think they want you to be." Anthony's Twisted Metal co-star Stephanie Beatriz, 44, also worked closely with Andre on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and she agreed how important interactions with other people are. She said: 'Unfortunately, we all go through grief in our lives. And all you really have are those memories. 'So Anthony's absolutely right. Coming to people in your life with the truest, most honest self as much as you can at all times is gonna feed the memories when you lose them. And hopefully feed their memories when someday they might lose you.' Malcolm's mom spoke out about her son's death earlier this week, and reassured fans the actor "did not suffer" and was "at peace" when he died. In a lengthy tribute shared on the new Malcolm-Jamal Warner Living Legacy Instagram page, she wrote in part: "For those of you who are at a loss, pained by the suddenness of his departure, ache for his presence or just to hear his voice one more time, to see his beatific smile one more time, be comforted that he was at peace and more importantly, he did not suffer. "Malcolm was birthed through water and transitioned through water. 'This was his time. His mission on earth had been completed. "Hold close to whatever part of Malcolm's life that touched yours. In keeping it near, you keep his spirit alive — nourishing you with the peace, love, joy and light that embodied Malcolm-Jamal Warner."
