The two rival governments that could split Sudan
After more than two years of war that has caused waves of ethnic killings, famine and massive displacement, Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are currently fighting for control of al-Fashir — the army's last foothold in the western Darfur region, an RSF stronghold.
A coalition led by the RSF announced the members of a parallel government last week. While it has not yet established institutions or been recognised, analysts say a potential breakaway of its territory could precipitate another split in Sudan, following the 2011 secession of South Sudan.
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Sudan's army and the RSF worked together in 2021 to oust the civilian politicians who took over from President Omar al-Bashir's toppled government two years earlier.
But in April 2023 war broke out between them over a push to integrate RSF fighters into the armed forces. The RSF took over swathes of the country, though the army pushed them out of the capital Khartoum and towards the west earlier this year.

Sanef slams Gaza journalist killings, calls for action and accountability
The United Nations reported that at least 242 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, with a rising death toll. Israel's military claimed responsibility for the assassination, saying Al-Sharif led a unit of Hamas' armed wing. According to RSF, Mohammed al-Khaldi, the creator of a YouTube news channel, was the sixth fatality, and freelance reporters Mohammed Sobh, Mohammed Qita and Ahmed al-Harazine were wounded. 'Right to information' Sanef said the attack is a 'grave threat to the public's right to information.' 'Sanef has, on numerous occasions, unequivocally condemned the brutality of the Israeli military in specifically targeting journalists and systematically denying other international journalists the ability to report live from Gaza. 'Disturbingly, the Israeli military has admitted to targeting journalists, attempting to unfairly brand them as Hamas operatives without any shred of evidence to justify these cold-blooded murders,' Sanef said. 'Sanef joins the call of other international organisations dedicated to defending media rights and advocating for media freedom and the protection of journalists, and voices its grave concerns'. Truth reporting The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), has repeatedly highlighted the record number of journalists killed in the conflict, emphasising the urgent need for investigations and accountability. RSF has similarly condemned the deliberate targeting of media workers, underscoring the vital role journalists play in informing the world during times of conflict. 'The world relies on journalists to bear witness and report the truth, and their protection must be paramount,' RSF said. Killing of Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza receives widespread condemnation

The five Al Jazeera staff correspondents were Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa, and freelance journalist Mohammad al-Khaldi was killed in a nearby tent. In a statement, Al Jazeera Media Network condemned the targeted assassination of its correspondents and photographers 'by the Israeli occupation forces, in yet another blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom'. 'As Al Jazeera Media Network bids farewell to yet another group of its finest journalists, who boldly and courageously documented the plight of Gaza and its people since the onset of the war, it holds the Israeli occupation forces and government responsible for deliberately targeting and assassinating its journalists,' the network said. The South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) said: 'SANEF has, on numerous occasions, unequivocally condemned the brutality of the Israeli military in specifically targeting journalists and systematically denying other international journalists the ability to report live from Gaza.
