Police launch investigation after reports of a rape in the town centre
Officers say that the attack took place in Bradshawgate in the early hours of Thursday.
As part of their enquiries they have released images of a man they want to speak to.

A spokesman for GMP Bolton said: "We're working to identify this man after the rape of a woman was reported in town at 1am on Thursday.
"We're working to provide the victim with all the support possible and we'd encourage anyone with information to call 0161 856 5757 quoting 176 of 24/07."

Met Police officer accused of sexually assaulting a woman while on holiday to appear in court
A Metropolitan Police officer who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman while on holiday in Romania is set to appear in court. PC Hubert Kokoszko was charged with sexual assault on a female on July 16 and immediately suspended from duty. The Met Police said the charge followed a report made to the force about the alleged assault in June last year. Kokoszko is accused of assaulting a woman who was known to him while he was off duty abroad. Following the report, he was interviewed under caution on October 28 2024. He will now appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday to face the charge. The victim is being supported by specialist officers. The Met added that its Directorate of Professional Standards was aware of the case.

An angry dad blasted 'you've ruined a family' to a judge who jailed him for dealing cocaine on a single day. Andrew Millard was stopped in a car in Solihull and caught with more than £400 worth of drugs as well as scales and a dealer phone. But the 41-year-old father-of-four from Bentley Grove, Weoley Castle was hoping to be spared jail at Birmingham Crown Court, which was told he was otherwise a 'hard-working and productive' family man earning £50,000 a year. Millard, who had admitted possession with intent to supply class A drugs, turned to his wife and son in the public gallery and said 'sorry'. He then became angry as he was ushered out of the dock shouting 'you've ruined a family' and 'absolute joke'. Recorder Reid had earlier told him: "I'm conscious of the effect these proceedings have had on your family. "That is often the case when people are convicted of supplying class A drugs. "It is not only users but innocent family members affected by this unlawful trade. "That's something ultimately you are responsible for." Police had stopped a white Mercedes after it turned off Grange Road in Solihull without indicating at around 1pm on May 16 back in 2023. Millard, who was driving, was found to have £160 in his wallet. Scales and two further bags with around £350 of cocaine and £80 worth, were also seized as was a Nokia phone containing incriminating messages. Nothing was recovered from two other men who were in the car at the time. Millard initially denied he was a street dealer but eventually confessed that he was. He had 14 previous convictions for 19 offences. He last committed a crime in 2014, for which he was jailed, when he smashed up two gaming machines at William Hill in Weoley Castle after losing £150 in ten minutes, a court heard at the time. Gerard Cullen, defending, emphasised that Millard had only been dealing drugs on that one day having been out of trouble for nearly a decade. He said: "He himself was a drug user of cocaine and cannabis. Unfortunately for him and his family that drug use led him to being here today at risk of custody. "He's prepared for the worst but hoping for the best. His wife and one of four children has attended in support, and continue to support him. "Otherwise he has led a hard-working and productive life and continues to do so." The barrister told the court Millard earned £50,000 a year working for a company that was contracted to Severn Trent Water. He said he was the main earner in his home arguing jail would 'result in the destruction of lives for so many people'. Mr Millard described his client as a 'net contributor to society', adding: "A lot of hard-working family men have vices. "It was his vices that led him here today. I ask on behalf of Mr Millard and his family he is given one chance." But even after the maximum one-third reduction for an early guilty plea was applied to Millard's sentence it still fell above the two-year threshold to legally suspend it. Recorder Reid said: "I have considered other alternatives to an immediate custodial sentence. "Regrettably, it is of a length that can't be suspended."

Nicola Sturgeon says she still misses Alex Salmond
Scotland's former first minister Nicola Sturgeon has said that she still misses her mentor Alex Salmond 'in some way'. The pair formed one of the most successful political partnerships in UK history however their relationship deteriorated and then broke down after sexual misconduct allegations against him emerged. Following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh in 2020, Mr Salmond was cleared of all 13 charges, which included attempted rape and sexual offences. In an exclusive interview with ITV News before the publication of her memoir Frankly on Thursday August 14, Ms Sturgeon said she misses the relationship she used to have with her mentor. And she said she was hit by a 'wave of grief' after hearing of his death in October last year. Speaking to ITV News at Ten presenter Julie Etchingham, she said: 'Even today I still miss him in some way, the person that I used to know and the relationship we used to have. 'But I thought I had made my peace with it, that I'd got to a point where I felt nothing. 'And then I got a call to tell me that Alex Salmond had died. I started crying on the phone and I just was hit by this wave of grief… and it was complicated because obviously we weren't just no longer friends, we were political enemies. 'There was no prospect I was going to be able to go to his funeral or anything like that and it was a kind of strange, strange feeling.' Mr Salmond went on to become leader of the Alba Party, which became a frequent critic of his former party the SNP. He died suddenly of a heart attack in October in North Macedonia at the age of 69. Ms Sturgeon, who succeeded him as Scotland's first minister in 2014, said: 'At the point he died, I hadn't spoken to him for years. 'I felt really deeply the loss of the relationship with him. I suddenly didn't have him. He wasn't there. I couldn't talk to him. And I went through this period of I would still talk to him in my head. 'I would have vivid dreams that we were still on good terms. And then I'd have this feeling of such sadness when I remembered the reality. 'So, I went through that process. I still missed him in some bizarre way.' During the interview Ms Sturgeon is also asked by Ms Etchingham about her description of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage as 'odious' in her memoir. She said: 'This is my impression, other people might have a different view of him. He just comes across as somebody who's got a very, very fragile ego. 'Somebody who's not particularly comfortable, particularly around women. 'In the 2015 leaders debate just before we went on air that night, I just remember hearing him tell somebody how much he'd had to drink, in the green room area beforehand, and it just felt this kind of bravado and just not very pleasant.'
