
Over 2,000 non-life-threatening calls to medical triage helpline directed away from emergency departments
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to 245,279 EMS calls in 2024 – an average of 672 calls a day. This was a 57 per cent increase from 2014.
"With Singapore's ageing population and rising healthcare needs, EMS calls are expected to continue increasing," said MOH and MHA last week.
The NurseFirst pilot will operate from 8am to 11pm daily. Outside of these hours, SCDF will deal with non-life-threatening 995 calls according to its current protocols.
The public can also call the NurseFirst helpline directly at 6262 6262 for non-life-threatening medical conditions to receive timely medical advice at no cost.
IS IT LIFE THREATENING?
The Advanced Medical Protocol System is used by SCDF to triage emergency medical calls based on their severity, SCDF said.
To determine the appropriate level of response, SCDF will ask questions about the patient's condition, for example, their level of consciousness and breathing status.
'It helps call-takers to assess the seriousness of a medical emergency and prioritise ambulance response to life-threatening cases,' SCDF said, adding that all 995 calls are assessed by call-takers using this system.
When a 995 call is assessed to be non-life-threatening, SCDF's Operations Centre will transfer the caller to the NurseFirst helpline for further assistance.
Non-life-threatening conditions include animal bites without allergic symptoms and without active bleeding, minor burns affecting less than 15 per cent of the body surface area, and resolved choking episodes without active symptoms, among others.

SINGAPORE: After a spate of recent cat deaths, Lee Hui Ying, one of the newly elected Members of Parliament (MP) for Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency (GRC), said earlier this week that she will raise the issue of enhancing penalties against animal welfare offences. Since May, at least three community cats have been found dead in Nee Soon and Punggol. After a second cat was found lifeless in Nee Soon within a short amount of time, CNA reported that a bounty of S$5,000 had been put up in the hopes of finding the person responsible for the deaths. Ms Lee noted in a Facebook post late on Tuesday night that the National Parks Board (NParks) finished investigations into the death of King Kong, the Nee Soon community cat found dead early last month, saying that it had likely been due to a vehicular accident. Most importantly, creating a safer environment for all,' the MP wrote, adding that she intends to speak on more penalties for animal welfare offences when Parliament reopens. Ms Lee wrote that Singapore needs stronger laws and enforcement, stricter penalties for cruelty, and better protection for voiceless lives. 'Our animals don't have a voice — but we do,' she added. CNA reported on Jun 4 that NParks has looked into the deaths of four cats, two in Yishun, one in Punggol, and one in Tampines. NParks' group director of enforcement and investigation Jessica Kwok said that a road accident was also the likely cause of the death of the Punggol community cat. 'NParks understands the concerns on cases of alleged animal cruelty, and we would like to assure the public that we take all feedback received from the public on alleged animal cruelty seriously and will investigate them thoroughly, including looking at any new evidence presented,' she added. 'Community cats in Singapore are increasingly becoming victims of abuse, with more reports of physical harm, poisoning, and neglect surfacing in recent months. ‘Why is nursing looked down on?' Student in Singapore pushes back against tired stereotypes
SINGAPORE: A nursing student recently took to Reddit to express her frustration over the negative perceptions people have of her chosen career. In her post titled ' Why are nurses so poorly regarded in society despite how hard they work?' , the student shared that whenever she tells someone she is studying nursing in a polytechnic, she often receives a 'judgy look.' Some even go so far as to ask whether nursing was her 'first choice.' 'Yes! It was my first choice,' she wrote in her post. 'With my O-Level score, I could have gone to JC, but I chose not to. I decided to go into nursing.' She went on to discuss the stigma surrounding the nursing profession — particularly how some people assume nursing is a backup option for students with poor grades. This perception, she said, is far from the truth. She pointed out that the cut-off point for nursing in polytechnics is actually among the highest across all courses, yet the field still suffers from a lack of respect. 'Despite all the bio, the diseases, and the hands-on clinical skills we're learning now, people have this idea like, 'Oh, nursing is for people who didn't do well and have nowhere else to go.' Like, what do you mean? All this stuff I'm learning right now is so hard,' she said. She also raised concerns about the pay gap between nurses and doctors, noting that it contributes to the belief that nurses are merely 'helpers' rather than professionals in their own right. 'People think that nurses are just the helpers for doctors because doctors get paid an insane amount of money, while nurses are paid so poorly. I do agree that nurses help doctors, but we aren't just helpers — we do so much more. Even if I could go into medicine, I wouldn't, because I love how much patient interaction nurses have,' she explained. Despite the stigma, the student expressed pride in her choice, describing her nursing journey so far as 'amazing' and deeply fulfilling. 'Nursing is so versatile. There are so many different pathways to pursue after you start working, and every day is something different. The last couple of weeks have been nothing but amazing, and as of now, I don't regret my decision,' she shared. She ended her post by inviting Singaporeans to share their thoughts on the profession. 'I know that there are also some people who are really grateful for nurses. But anyway, this was just a thought, and I would love to hear what other Singaporeans think about nurses!' 'Singaporean society values prestige and money.' Contrary to the judgments she received, many users in the comments shared that they do not look down on the profession and are, in fact, grateful for nurses. 'I don't regard nurses poorly at all,' one user said. 'Just surprised that people are willing to take up such a demanding and unappreciated profession, especially if they are local. Takes a certain strength of character, nothing but respect.' 'I respect nurses and caregivers 100%, especially during COVID,' another chimed in. 'I can't imagine seeing a patient coughing his lungs out, asking for help while professing to be anti-vax.' Others, however, shared their views on why some people might look down on the profession. I would say for SG, it's mainly because of the pay, and as you know, in SG society, getting money = having dignity. If a nurse were paid similarly to a doctor, you wouldn't receive such comments. Back in 2022, Dr Pamela Cipriano, the president of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), spoke out about why nursing tends to be looked down on in many parts of the world. One big reason, she said, is because of gender. Since around 90 per cent of nurses worldwide are women, nursing has historically been seen as less important or skilled. For a long time, jobs that involve caregiving, such as nursing, have been labelled as 'women's work' and therefore not taken seriously. This outdated view has led to the profession being undervalued, both in terms of public perception and in how much nurses are paid. Dr Cipriano added, 'ICN calls for health systems around the world to invest in nursing and evaluate the gendered pay models toward the nursing profession as a historically female profession. S$52K rental for Tampines clinic: Ong Ye Kung ‘dismayed,' Ho Ching defends winning bidder
SINGAPORE: After a doctor shared on LinkedIn on Sunday (June 1) that a General Practitioner (GP) clinic in Tampines was being charged a monthly rental rate of more than S$52,000, many Singaporeans expressed their shock online , in keeping with growing dissatisfaction with rental rates across the city-state, as many feel they've become too expensive. Since then, the story has unfolded further, with the company that won the rental bid explaining its side, telling CNA the high price it pays for rent will not be passed on to its patients by way of higher fees for consultations and medications. Andrew Chim, the co-owner of I-Health Medical Holdings, was quoted in a Jun 4 (Wednesday) report as saying that 'Rent is not commensurate with (consultation) fee. I can assure you that the total bill for different cases will be in range for other heartland clinics.' Later that day, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung weighed in on the issue, writing in a Facebook post that he was 'dismayed' by the rental bid, which is equivalent to S$1,000 per square meter. He emphasised the growing importance of GPs in Singapore's ageing society, highlighting their vital role in fostering the necessary trust between doctors and patients, as the latter are guided toward better health outcomes. 'He or she is the vital link to connect patients to acute hospital care, preventive community care, and social prescriptions,' he wrote. Mr Ong added that in May, the Health Ministry and the Housing Development Board (HDB) launched a Price-Quality evaluation Model (PQM) at Bartley Beacon. In this new approach, the quality of care accounts for 70% of the tender evaluation, while rental makes up the remaining 30%. Although the Tampines clinic had been awarded before the new PQM, he said that it will become the norm for when tendering GP clinics in HDB heartlands. On Thursday morning, however, the winning bid for the S$52,000 clinic at Tampines appeared to be defended by Ho Ching, the former CEO of Temasek. In a Facebook post, Madam Ho, the wife of Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, wrote that the company that won the bid is 'not a newbie' as it has won and lost bids in the past and has three other existing clinics. 'These are folks who have experience and know the operating costs,' she added, explaining that the company had assessed its bid as a long-term investment, building its clientele with families in a new estate that would remain loyal through the years. 'They even studied how many BTOs (build-to-orders) are coming up and what other developments are coming up before they bidded.
