Beyond The Gates Recap: Martin Tells Smitty The Truth About Two Years Ago
On today's Beyond The Gates recap:
Anita and Vernon's Mansion: Anita arrives home and immediately ignores a call (Tracy?). She calls out for Vernon but gets no response.
Orphey Gene's: Bill, Martin and Vernon are chatting. Martin can't believe Kenneth is dead and his nightmare is over. Bill lies and says Kenneth was at the wrong place at the wrong time and is dead. Either way, it works well for them. Vernon remembers back to a few minutes ago when he saw Malone with a gun pointed at Kenneth. Martin can't believe he almost burned his whole world to the ground. Martin grabs Bill's phone when he realizes the picture of dead Kenneth was sent to him at the perfect time. Bill tells him to focus on the two-year weight that has been lifted from his shoulders.
Martin doesn't think the weigh has been lifted. Kenneth may be dead but his nightmares will remain. He won't be free until he stands in his truth. Bill wants his nephew to straighten things out with his family but thinks going public is crazy. Martin thinks he's seeing everything clearly as he looks around the room and sees Joey and suspects either Malone or the Chief of Police is in on the situation. Just then, reporters approach and ask about the cancellation of the presser. He doesn't make a comment and they are ushered out. Martin mouths off at both Bill and Vernon before storming out.
Joey won't reveal any more details. He says his business is such that he can't tell her every little thing. He knows she gets turned on by the rush, but Vanessa wants to be the judge of what she can handle.
Vernon is furious with Bill for not calling off his thugs. Bill shoots back that his 'self-righteous ass' heard what he wanted. Money wasn't going to fix anything and a more permanent solution was necessary. Vernon says his entire family is now an accessory to murder. Bill shoots back saying he's not that sloppy. They continue to snipe back and forth until Vernon stops him saying, 'we both know who really holds the power in this room.' With that, he exits.
Vanessa pushes Joey about being his alibi. He tries to charm her but to no avail. She says she's involved with the Duprees and wants to know every dirty detail of whatever is going on. Joey tries to get out of telling her anything but Vanessa pushes. He gets close and says they disposed of a very bad man.
Malone arrives and Vanessa makes a spectacle of calling him over to their table. She looks at him and says she hears the evening has been quite productive. Vanessa gets snarky with Malone and Joey about the adrenaline rush of the night's activities. She continues but Joey yells, 'ENOUGH!' Joey says if she ever brings up his business in this way again things will not end well for her.
Martin and Smitty's Place: Samantha is beyond irked they are just sitting and waiting for pop. Smitty reminds her and Tyrell that their pop made a choice, and he chose to leave. Smitty's phone rings. He says it's not their pop but he still needs to take it. His boss fills Smitty in on Martin's press conference and how it was quickly cancelled. Next, Smitty gets a call from a reporter at the presser who asks about the family emergency. He knows better than to answer and quickly hangs up.
Martin returns and finds his family waiting and his bags at the door. He begs Smitty to let him explain. Smitty is not trying to hear any of it and can only focus on the secrets and lies. Samantha and Tyrell are just happy their pop is home, but their dad is on a roll. Martin says he's done with the secrets and hiding. He asks the kids to leave the room, but Smitty stops him. They've all been impacted by Martin's deception and deserve to know the truth. Samantha agrees to go upstairs, and Tyrell reluctantly follows.
Martin apologizes to Smitty, but he only wants to know what happened two years ago. Martin goes directly into the story. He and Vernon were at a political event. On the way back, they took a wrong turn.
Flashback: Martin is driving and talking to Vernon about life on the political trail. Just then, they get a flat tire.
In real-time, Martin says they were alone on a dark, deserted country road.
Flashback: Martin gets out of the car and opens the trunk to get the spare tire. Just then, a car approaches and pulls up behind them. Kenneth and presumably his brother get out and size up the situation. Vernon hops out and thanks them for stopping but says their foot to go. Kenneth says they can help but not for free. He asks how much money they have. Vernon mentions calling the police to help. The brother gets too close to Martin who pulls back the tire iron as if to strike him. The brother says, 'let's see what color's your money.' Kenneth goes for Vernon while the brother goes after Martin. Kenneth pulls a gun and Martin knocks him to the ground with the tire iron. The brother comes for him and Martin knocks him down, as well. Martin then jumps on top of the brother and beats him until blood splatters all over his shirt. Vernon begs him to stop and then pulls him off. Vernon reaches down and says the brother is dead and Kenneth is unconscious.
In real-time, Smitty is in shock but Martin says there's more. He isn't even certain what happened afterwards as he was in shock. Smitty begs him not to shut down now. Martin says his grandfather knew who to call to make everything disappear. Smitty knows he means Malone. Martin confirms and says he showed up with Chief Hawthorne right behind him. His grandfather told the Chief to get him out of there and he drove him home, which is when Smitty saw him in a disheveled state. Smitty knew something serious had gone down. Martin says he was in his grandfather's clothes because there was so much blood. He admits he killed a man, snuffing his life out like it was nothing. He continues to see what he did to Kenneth's face in his nightmares.
Smitty asks about the dead body and the witness to the crime. He asks if Martin was a part of the cover up. Martin says he went along with all of it, even when Joey was brought in. Smitty realizes that's when Malone's bank account blew up.
Martin explains his rage. When he saw the white man lay hands on his grandfather, he couldn't control himself. The rage exploded against the situation and the hatred of those two men. Smitty is in tears as he can't believe Martin has lived with this much pain for so long. With that, the two embrace.
Martin asks if Smitty wants to hear the rest and he says yes. Martin says Kenneth was one of the two men. He just found out Ted was called in for the plastic surgery and Kenneth was given money to start a new life overseas. He always worried Kenneth would return and he did, weeks ago. Martin explains he was working at the country club but he didn't realize who he was, until Kenneth made contact.
Smitty begins to breathe like a bull when he realizes Martin kept quiet despite the danger looming over their father. Martin says granddad insisted but Smitty isn't hearing it. He is beside himself knowing how Martin's inaction kept them in all kinds of danger as they walked around oblivious.
Smitty reminds Martin of how he held him through every nightmare and begged to be let in. Even so, Martin should have told him immediately when Kenneth returned. Smitty says he should have protected them but he failed.
Anita and Vernon's Mansion: Vernon arrives home and is thrilled to find Anita waiting for him. She can tell something is wrong and asks him to tell her everything. Vernon is evasive asking all kinds of questions about Chicago. Anita stops him dead as she wants to know what is going on.
Fairmont Country Club: Bill is drinking when Dani approaches.
Previous Beyond The Gates Recap:
Endings

Dani and Bill drink together and she asks what's wrong. After they go back and forth a bit, Bill admits her daddy raked him over the coals. Dani says if her father gave it to him hard then he knew Bill could take it. Further, she thinks Bill and her father compliment each other but he disagrees.
Vernon tells Anita the night from two years ago has all come back, and Martin is drowning.
Martin admits the worst choice he made through the last two years was not being honest with him. Smitty believes him and is horrified by what his husband experienced. He can even understand Martin maintaining the lie until a few weeks ago. His loyalty should have been to his family. Smitty looks upstairs towards the children and tells Martin he needs to go as he is a danger to the family. They argue back and forth until Martin admits Kenneth is dead.

Comcast Profit Jumps 183% on $9.4 Billion Sale of Hulu Stake
Comcast Corporation saw a substantial net income lift in the second quarter of 2025, owing to the sale of its Hulu share to Disney. Net income was reported as $11.1 billion on Thursday thanks to the $9.4 billion the company received from the sale. Revenue also increased 2.1% over the quarter to hit $30.3 billion. This was partially due to growth in the company's Content and Experiences division, which saw a 6% uptick in revenue due to the opening of Universal's latest Orlando theme park, Epic Universe. Connectivity revenue also increased 5.4% due to growth in domestic broadband and wireless as well as international connectivity and business services connectivity. More from TheWrap Comcast Profit Jumps 183% on $9.4 Billion Sale of Hulu Stake 'South Park' Season 27 Premiere Nabs Almost 6 Million Viewers Across Platforms, Biggest Linear Share Since 1999 'Superman' Soars as the No. 1 Title Audiences Are Most Excited About for 7th Consecutive Week | Chart Paramount Needs 'South Park' — Despite the Ridicule and $1.5 Billion Price Tag | Analysis As for the television and film side of the business, media EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) increased 9.3% year over year to hit $1.5 billion. This uptick was largely driven by Peacock, which increased its revenue by 18% to hit $1.2 billion during the quarter, as well as decreases in programming and production costs. Peacock's EBITDA losses also accounted for $101 million, a $247 million improvement from the year prior. The studios division saw a EBITDA decrease of 31%, accounting for $85 million. Despite seeing an 8% increase in revenue over the quarter, higher operating expenses led to the overall decline. Specifically, those expenses reflected higher costs connected to content licensing sales as well as higher marketing andpromotion expenses that were spent on both recent and upcoming theatrical film releases. Two of the company's buzziest movies — the live action 'How to Train Your Dragon' and 'Jurassic World: Rebirth' — premiered in summer, which partially accounted for the increased costs. The profits from both of those movies will likely be better reflected in Comcast's third quarter report. Here are the key takeaways: Net income: $11.1 billion, up 183% year over year. On an adjusted basis, net income fell 1.7% to $4.65 billion. Earnings per share: $2.98 per share, compared to $4.06 per share expected by analysts surveyed by Yahoo Finance. Revenue: $30.3 billion, compared to $123.6 billion expected by analysts surveyed by Yahoo Finance. The latest quarterly results come as Comcast is preparing to spin off its cable network portfolio into a publicly traded, standalone company called Versant by the end of 2025. Versant, which is expected to reach over 65 million U.S. households and generate $7 billion in annual revenue, will house MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, Golf Channel and digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow and SportsEngine. The move will be tax-free to Comcast's shareholders. Last week, Versant unveiled its full board of directors, which will include its CEO Mark Lazarus, former Yum Brands! CEO David Novak as chairman and Disney's former international content and operations chairman Rebecca Campbell, among others. It also comes as NBCUniversal recently closed its upfront negotiations, touting a nearly 15% year over year increase in ad commitments across its broadcast offerings, including news, sports and entertainment. It also said it was the largest digital upfront and strongest sports upfront in history, though it offered no hard numbers. Versant, which will continue to be represented by NBCU in the next two upfront cycles, saw a nearly 10% increase in clients investing in its brands, while Peacock saw an over 20% year over year increase, representing nearly a third of the media giant's total upfront commitments. The company's new 11-year media rights deal with the NBA contributed to a 20% increase in new clients compared to the 2024-2025 season and a 45% year over year increase in volume. Over 25% of NBCUniversal's NBA advertisers will be new to broadcast this year. Peacock has hiked the price of its plans by $3 per month, with its premium plan hitting $10.99 per month and premium plus plan hitting $16.99 per month. The change took effect for new customers on July 23 and will impact existing customers on Aug. 22. It also is testing a $7.99 per month Select tier, which will feature current seasons of NBC and Bravo programming and a broad assortment of library titles. Reno, Nevada casino shooting remains a mystery as police reveal suspect fired 80 shots
The gunman who opened fire at a Reno casino on Monday fired 80 shots during a deadly rampage that left three people dead and several others injured, authorities said Tuesday, though the shooter's motive remains unclear. The suspect, identified as Dakota Hawver, 26, of Reno, is in critical condition after being shot by police during a gunfight outside the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, according to the Sparks Police Department, which is leading the investigation. Investigators have found no connection between Hawver and the Grand Sierra Resort or any of the victims, and his motive remains unknown, according to the department. Hawver walked on foot to the valet area of the casino just before 7:30 a.m. and opened fire on a group of victims using a 9mm handgun and multiple magazines, officials said. Investigators determined Hawver legally purchased the gun about two years ago and purchased the ammunition recently. He has no criminal history and no history of mental health problems, officials said. Two of the victims – Justin Aguila, 23, and Andrew Canepa, 33 – were fatally shot from behind while waiting in the valet area for a ride to the airport, police said. Both men were in town from Southern California for a bachelor party with friends. A third victim, 66-year-old Reno resident Angel Martinez, was driving his car through the parking lot away from the casino when the suspect jumped out from behind another vehicle and shot Martinez several times, killing him, police said. Two other victims wounded in the shooting remained hospitalized but were expected to make a full recovery, police said. When the shooting began, the suspect's gun initially malfunctioned before he was able to get it to shoot multiple times on the group outside the casino, police said Monday. He then ran through the parking lot, where he encountered an armed security guard. The gunman shot at the guard, who returned fire, before continuing to run, police said. The suspect eventually encountered responding police officers and was shot in an exchange of gunfire. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

Denton native, jazz saxophonist shares his journey to the Juilliard School's Master of Music Performance program
The road to Juilliard isn't an easy one—but for Denton native Matthew Garcia, it's been a journey fueled by passion and practice that's now taking center stage. Garcia, a jazz saxophonist and graduate of Denton High School, has been accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School's Master of Music in Jazz Performance program—one of the most selective music conservatories in the world. "It requires you to give so much of yourself," Garcia said. "It's beyond a hobby, it's beyond a passion, it's beyond a career. I think it's really part of who you are." Garcia's love for jazz started early. At 11 years old, he picked up his first saxophone and never looked back. "When I made All-State Jazz my junior year of high school, that's when my parents were like, 'Oh, okay, you're serious,'" they said. "So they ended up buying me a new instrument, actually." That very horn helped carry him to New York City, where he earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at NYU. There, Garcia studied under acclaimed jazz musicians like Ron McClure, Lenny White and Melissa Aldana, building a reputation as a rising star in the scene. During his time at NYU, Garcia was recognized as a YoungArts Finalist, performed in the JAS Academy Big Band led by Christian McBride and toured internationally after his combo won the NYU Combo Competition. He has since played at iconic venues including The Village Vanguard, Carnegie Hall, Smalls Jazz Club, Birdland and The Blue Note—sharing the stage with jazz legends and peers alike. "Oh, the talent's been there all along," said Emilio Mesa, who taught Garcia private lessons. "It was a matter of just kind of gently nudging him in a direction that led him to realize that talent, to realize that potential." In fall 2025, Garcia will begin his studies at The Juilliard School, joining a small, elite group of jazz musicians selected from around the world. "I was sitting there refreshing it. I refreshed it, it came out, it was a big 'Congratulations,'" Garcia said, recalling the moment he found out he was accepted. "It felt good to receive that validation—that people think I'm on the path to becoming what I want to become." For now, Garcia is back in Texas for the summer, performing, teaching and giving back to the community that helped launch his career. And while the stages may keep getting bigger, he remains rooted in his purpose: to inspire the next generation of jazz artists.
