She was believed to have made the threat via a social media messaging application. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the 38-year-old local was detained at Kampung Hidayat Batu 4, Jalan Apas, here, at 2.45pm on Friday. 'A hairdresser lodged a complaint on Jan 3, last year, claiming she received a threatening message via WhatsApp,' he said, Saturday. Jasmin said the arrest was made by a team from the District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJND) in front of an unnumbered house, where a mobile phone was also confiscated. According to the police report, the suspect had allegedly sent a message stating, 'Di mana-mana aku jumpa binimu, aku kasi pecah kepalanya (Wherever I see your wife, I'll smash her head).' 'The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation through online communication, which carries a sentence of up to two years in prison upon conviction,' said Jasmin. In a separate case, police arrested a local youth suspected of trespassing into a home and attempting to assault a woman in her rented room in town last Sunday. Jasmin said the 20-year-old suspect was apprehended by the Strike Team from Tawau Police Station at 10.15pm on Thursday at a car park in the town area. The arrest followed a police report lodged by the alleged victim, a 25-year-old female tenant who was traumatised and concerned for her safety. 'According to the complainant, the incident occurred while she was asleep in her room when the suspect allegedly broke in, covered her mouth and attempted to rob her. 'She was startled by the suspect's actions and immediately woke up, screamed and struggled, managing to push the door open, which caused the suspect to be thrown out of the room,' he said. Initial investigations revealed that the victim did not suffer any losses or have any valuables stolen, as her swift reaction thwarted the suspect's intentions. Jasmin added that police reviewed CCTV footage and carried out intelligence work, which led to the suspect's arrest. A cap, sling bag and a pair of slippers believed to have been used by the suspect were also seized. The case is being investigated under Section 448 of the Penal Code for house trespass. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Herbal trader fined for insulting Orang Asli community and Deputy Speaker on Facebook
IPOH: A 53-year-old herbal trader who insulted the Orang Asli community and Parliament Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor on his Facebook account pleaded guilty at the Tapah Magistrate's Court on Thursday (July 31). The accused, M. Toraise @ Turesh Kumar, made the guilty plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Anis Zainab Pawanteh. The trader from Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, was fined RM1,300. According to the charge sheet, the accused, on May 27 at approximately 9.30pm, had intentionally made an insulting remark on his Facebook account. His action provoked anger in an individual named Bah Bi A/L Bah Kerundang, who then lodged a police report. The accused committed an offence punishable under Section 504 of the Penal Code. Prosecuting officer Insp Herman Kayae asked for an appropriate sentence as a lesson to both the accused and the public to prevent repetition and to deter making comments that could disrupt public order. The accused was represented by lawyer R. Balamurali, who said his client is a single father supporting two children and is running a small business, earning between RM1,000 and RM1,500 a month. He added that the accused has limited language comprehension and was unaware that his actions could disrupt public peace. "The accused has pleaded guilty, apologised, and expressed remorse for the offence committed," he said. He paid the fine. In the police report dated June 23, Bah Bi, who is the Malaysian Ex-Police Association (Senoi Praaq branch) president from Jalan Pahang in Tapah, lodged the report after coming across the post. In the post, the accused had called Ramli a "sakai" and stated that he (Ramli) has the mental capacity "like Tarzan".

Rights groups urge Nepal to reverse Telegram ban
KATHMANDU: Rights groups on Thursday (July 31) urged Nepal to reverse a ban on the Telegram messaging app, calling the move a serious threat to freedom of expression and digital privacy. The Himalayan nation blocked access to the app on July 18, citing a rise in online fraud and money laundering. "The government's ban is a serious human rights violation and a discriminatory decision," said Taranath Dahal of Freedom Forum, a media freedom watchdog. "This shows the government can ban any platform without transparency, which is extremely concerning." Freedom Forum was among more than two dozen organisations to release a statement demanding an "immediate" reversal of the ban. "The sudden, unlawful disruption has severely impacted journalists, human rights defenders, students, small businesses, and others who depend on the platform for essential day-to-day communication," said a statement released by #KeepItOn, an international coalition of civil society organisations. Min Prasad Aryal, spokesperson for the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, confirmed the government's directive. "We asked all internet service providers to block the app after receiving an order from the Prime Minister's Office," Aryal told AFP. Nepal has restricted access to popular online platforms in the past. In August last year, the government lifted a nine-month ban on TikTok after the platform's South Asia division agreed to comply with Nepali regulations. Telegram, launched in 2013, is a cloud-based messaging app known for its privacy features and support for large group chats and broadcast channels. The app has an estimated billion users worldwide, but faces restrictions in some countries. Telegram's Russian-born founder and chief executive Pavel Durov was briefly detained in France last year and questioned again this week about the platform's alleged complicity in criminal activity. - AFP

[UPDATED]: Police launch murder probe after decomposed body found near railway tracks
HULU SELANGOR: Police have launched a murder investigation following the gruesome discovery of a man's decomposed body near the railway tracks at Kampung Sungai Serian, Kalumpang. Hulu Selangor police chief Superintendent Ibrahim Husin said that police received a distress call from a member of the public at approximately 10.30am today, reporting the sighting of a body in the area. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was found at the side of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway tracks," Ibrahim said in a statement. "It is believed to have been thrown from a nearby bridge that stands 11.15m high." According to forensic officers at the scene, the victim's hands and feet had been tightly bound. "His head was wrapped in cloth and secured with black and white adhesive tape. We believe the man has been dead for more than four days based on the state of decomposition," he said, adding that no identification documents were found on the body. Ibrahim said the body has been sent to Sungai Buloh Hospital for a post-mortem, which is scheduled to be conducted tomorrow at 9am.
