PAPAR: One man was killed and two others injured in an early morning crash involving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a lorry along KM16, Jalan Papar–Bongawan on Thursday. District Police Chief Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the 4.48am incident occurred when the MPV, driven by a 35-year-old man, lost control and veered into the opposite lane. The vehicle, which was heading towards Membakut from Papar with two passengers onboard, collided with the front right side of an oncoming lorry. The 66-year-old backseat passenger sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Ukrainian drones force suspension of Russian electronics factory
MOSCOW: Work at an electronics factory in Russia's Chuvashia region, some 600 kilometres east of Moscow, was briefly suspended on Monday after a Ukrainian drone attack, local officials said. Moscow said falling debris from intercepted drones fell on the facility, while Ukraine claimed a direct hit on the site. 'This morning, Ukrainian attempts to use drones in Chuvashia were detected,' regional governor Oleg Nikolayev wrote on Telegram. 'Two drones fell on the territory of the VNIIR factory,' said Nikolayev, adding that there were no casualties. The site is one of the main factories producing electronic components in Russia. Ukraine's General Staff said in a statement that it had targeted 'a military-industrial complex facility, where antennas for Shahed (drones) were manufactured'. Russia fires dozens of Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones at Ukrainian cities on a daily basis. Ukraine regularly launches retaliatory drone strikes in response to Moscow's aerial bombardments, which began with its full-scale offensive into Ukrainian territory more than three years ago. 'Strikes on the facilities that support the armed aggression of the Russian Federation will continue until it is completely stopped,' Ukraine's General Staff added. Governor Nikolayev said that the decision had been taken to 'temporarily suspend production to ensure the safety of employees'. Russia's defence ministry said it intercepted 49 Ukrainian drones overnight. Ukraine said it shot down 'dozens' of Russian drones over its western Rivne region. The massive Russian attack saw Ukraine's western neighbour Poland scramble fighter jets to secure its airspace, Warsaw's Operational Command said in a statement on social media.

Gerik crash: Initial probe reveals crash triggered by rear-end collision with MPV
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: The crash scene. - fotoBERNAMA GERIK: Initial investigations by the police have revealed that the fatal bus accident which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Upsi) students, occurred when the bus hit the rear of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), believed to be a Perodua Alza, before overturning. Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the bus was carrying 42 Upsi students, eight men and 32 women, aged between 21 and 23, all from the east coast. Advertisement He said the bus, which was registered in Kedah, had been privately chartered by the students and the group departed from Jertih, Terengganu at 9 pm on Sunday and was en route to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when the crash occurred at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Banun, Gerik, early this morning. 'This tragic accident has resulted in 15 fatalities. All the bodies are currently awaiting post-mortem. Thirteen of the deceased have been sent to Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital, while two others were taken to Gerik Hospital. 'Twenty-seven others - 23 women and four men - suffered injuries. The bus driver, aged 40, and his 54-year-old co-driver were also hurt in the incident,' Noor Hisam told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters today. Noor Hisam said that the driver and passengers of the MPV, namely a couple aged 37 and 36, as well as their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were also injured and taken to Baling Hospital, Kedah, for treatment. 'The road where the accident occurred is winding and downhill (hilly)...It was dark and had no lights except for the area near Tasik Banding, but it is still too early to draw any conclusions. Two trawlers detained for illegal fishing near Kudat coast

KUDAT: Two trawler-type fishing boats were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritim Malaysia) in Kudat waters on Sunday for operating less than three nautical miles from the shore. Kudat Maritime Zone Director Commander Hasbullah Omar said the vessels were detected at around 6.30pm, about 2.6 nautical miles northeast of Marina estuary, through Sabah's Sea Surveillance System (Swasla). Advertisement A patrol vessel dispatched under Ops Sejahtera, Ops Pluto Timur, Ops Cegah Pati and Ops Tiris found the boats trawling nets within prohibited waters and detained six individuals, including two locals and four Indonesians with valid documents. Another boat was detained at 7pm the same evening, about 2.2 nautical miles off Tagumamal waters, carrying nine crew members, one of whom was a Filipino with questionable identification.
