Coolie worldwide box office collection day 1: Rajinikanth powers film to ₹150 crore start; beats War 2, Pathaan, Animal
Coolie worldwide box office report
Coolie earned ₹65 crore net in India on its opening day, according to early estimates from Sacnillk. This is the second-best domestic opening for any Tamil film, behind only Vijay's Leo ( ₹66 crore) and ahead of Rajni's own 2.0 ( ₹60 crore). The final gross collection figures for the film are yet to be released, but they are around ₹80 crore, as per rough data.
This is an impressive feat for Rajinikanth, who has powered this film to record occupancy figures in not just the native Tamil language but also in the Telugu and Hindi-dubbed versions. The presence of Nagarjuna and Upendra, along with Aamir Khan's cameo, seems to have helped too. However, Coolie's real success has come overseas, where the film has set several new all-time records for a Tamil film.
Sun Pictures, the production house behind the film, announced on their social media on Friday that Coolie has earned $3.04 million in North America, £124K in the UK, and Aus $535K in Australia on its opening day. All three are new records for a Tamil film in the respective territory. These three territories alone give ₹31 crore gross to Coolie on its opening day. Trade sources say that territories like the Middle East, South East Asia, and Europe - traditionally strong for Rajinikanth films - would likely double the figure. Coolie can easily rake in ₹70 crore from the overseas markets on day 1, taking its global haul to ₹150 crore.
This would put it in the top-10 highest-opening Indian films of all time with a chance at claiming the Tamil all-time record from Leo ( ₹142.5 crore). A ₹145-150 crore opening would mean that Coolie would easily surpass the day 1 collections of mega hits like Jawan ( ₹126 crore), Animal ( ₹116 crore), Pathaan ( ₹104 crore), and Rajini's best-ever 2.0 ( ₹94 crore). Coolie also easily beats War 2, the Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR film that clashed with it. War 2 has opened at around ₹90-95 crore worldwide.
Coolie in sight of all-time Tamil record
The strong opening day puts Coolie on track for a solid opening weekend. The Independence Day holiday will give the film some boost, and it should aim to cross ₹300 crore by Sunday. If that holds true, Coolie has a shot at becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film ever, beating 2.0's mark of ₹691 crore.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie stars Rajinikanth in the titular role. The action thriller also features Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj and a cameo from Aamir Khan. The film has received mixed reviews, but that has not slowed it down at the box office.

War 2 Box Office Day 3: Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR's Film Sees BIG Drop, Trails Behind Coolie
Last Updated: War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, started with Rs 52 crore, rose to Rs 57.35 crore on Day 2, but saw a drastic fall on Day 3. The film also stars Kiara Advani. War 2 Box Office Collections Day 2: Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's much-anticipated film, co-starring Kiara Advani, released on August 14, clashing with Rajinikanth's Coolie. While the film raked in a decent amount for two days, War 2 saw a big drop in collection on the third day. The film now trails far behind Coolie, however, it raked in more money than Salman Khan's Sikandar. War opened to a staggering Rs 52 crore at the box office. On Day 2, the numbers hiked by 10.29 per cent, minting Rs 57.35 crore. However, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's film saw a big drop in collection on Day 3 by earning Rs 33 crore (early estimates). It saw an overall Hindi occupancy of 31.42% on Saturday, August 16. The total collection of War 2 stands at Rs 142.35 crore. However, there are chances the numbers could take a different turn after its first weekend in theatres. Meanwhile, Raijinikanth's Coolie is witnessing grear box office numbers. The film minted Rs 300 crore at the global box office. How is Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR's War 2? News18 Showsha rated War 2 with a 2.5/5 stars. An excerpt from our review read: 'At 2 hours 50 minutes, War 2 tries to go full throttle but often skids into chaos. A thriller of this scale definitely needed crisper editing. Instead, what we get is a bunch of long-drawn flashbacks that dilute the pace, stripping the film of any solid edge-of-the-seat, nail-biting moment. But what needs to be truly spoken about are its action sequences. One thing is clear – Kabir and Vikram/Rahu are immortal. Nothing can kill them. Bullets, swords, fire, icicles, nothing. Most importantly, they can fly. They fly over land and water. Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR's War 2 fee revealed The buzz around War 2 just got bigger. Earlier, reports revealed that Jr NTR is being paid a massive Rs 70 crore fee for the film, while Hrithik Roshan will take home Rs 50 crore along with backend earnings. Now, fresh reports suggest that the South superstar has also struck a lucrative profit-sharing deal. According to Bollywood Hungama, Yash Raj Films (YRF) has sold the Telugu rights of War 2 outright to producer Naga Vamsi for an impressive Rs 90 crore. A source told the portal, 'Naga Vamsi has acquired Telugu rights for War 2 for Rs 90 crores. Every profit from the Telugu theatrical medium will now go to Naga Vamsi, while YRF has received an outright recovery of ₹90 crores on a budget of Rs 400 crore. The Telugu case has been settled between the parties." Interestingly, NTR Jr has also negotiated a share of the profits from the Telugu version. 'After receiving a large salary of ₹70 crores, NTR Jr. is also entitled to a portion of the revenues from the Telugu version of Naga Vamsi. He is anticipated to earn more than ₹100 crore by the end of the run, as the Telugu version of War 2 is expected to generate significant earnings. The profits from Telugu will be split between NTR Jr. and Vamsi, not YRF or Hrithik," the trade source added. Directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Aditya Chopra, War 2 is the latest entrant in the YRF Spy Universe. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani, the high-octane action entertainer released on August 14, 2025, in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. 2025: A year that documented the fall of greats in Tamil cinema
2025, in the history of Tamil cinema, will not only be remembered for its blockbusters but also its spectacular failures. It was a year that began with unprecedented expectations but ended up witnessing the downfall of many industry legends. From Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan to Shankar, Suriya, and AR Murugadoss, many celebrated stars and directors faced the wrath of the Rajinikanth's 'Coolie', despite being a money-spinner, was at the receiving end of criticism, mostly aimed at director Lokesh Kanagaraj for his writing. Or the lack of SPECTACULAR STUMBLE: GAME CHANGER THAT DIDN'TShankar, one of India's most celebrated filmmakers, witnessed an epic fall with Ram Charan-starrer 'Game Changer'. The film, which tackles corruption - a recurring topic in his films - was criticised for its poor writing and redundant tropes. The film was supposed to strike gold in theatres during the Sankranti/Pongal holidays. Instead, it was stuck in a cesspool of negative reviews that dissected Shankar's dwindling form since 2015. While Shankar proved his prowess in his career spanning three decades, his last few films have suffered from repetitiveness. Sure, Shankar can mount several hundred crore projects and make use of state-of-the-art technological advancements in his films. But his stories have lacked reinvention, and the negative reviews are proof of that. AR MURUGADOSS AND THE SIKANDAR DISASTERAR Murugadoss was a filmmaker who gifted the Tamil cinema audience some of the greatest films - 'Ramana', 'Ghajini', 'Thuppakki', and many more. This year saw him collaborate with Salman Khan for 'Sikandar'. The star power of Salman Khan and AR Murugadoss's directorial skills, on paper, signalled a promising opening at the box 'Sikandar' was so lifeless that it hardly recovered its total budget in its lifetime. According to trade reports, the Salman Khan-starrer wrapped up its run before it could even touch the Rs 200 crore-mark, a milestone that Salman Khan's films easily surpass, even if the content is DECADE-LONG QUEST FOR A HIT CONTINUESIt has been almost a decade since Suriya tasted monumental success at the box office. Even though most of the films of the past decade boasted brilliant performances, their box office figures tell a different story. This year saw 'Retro', which marked his collaboration with director Karthik Subbaraj. The film's success would have put an end to the 10-year-long 'Retro' failed to impress the audience. The story took us to different places, and so did the screenplay, which meandered more than it should. 'Retro's criticism made Suriya's quest for a big hit wait longer, and now, he has pinned all his hopes on his upcoming film, 'Karuppu', directed by RJ LIFE: WHEN LEGENDS COLLIDE AND CRASHadvertisementOne of the biggest disappointments of 2025 was 'Thug Life', which marked the reunion of the iconic duo - Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan - 38 years after 'Nayakan'. The film raked in approximately Rs 93 crore globally, creating the most devastating blow not just for the makers, but also for fans who believed in it. Despite being a film that carried the weight of Haasan's acting prowess and Ratnam's genius, it crashed and how!'Thug Life's debacle reiterated the emerging problems in Tamil cinema. A few years ago, star power combined with directorial excellence was considered a sure-shot hit formula. But, the film's performance at the box office and its reviews pointed out that times are indeed changing. EVEN RAJINIKANTH'S COOLIE WASN'T SPAREDRajinikanth's films never flop. They always guarantee box office success, irrespective of the content. On August 14, his film, 'Coolie', directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, hit theatres amid unparalleled hype. But, right from its first show, the film has been receiving polarising reactions from critics and audiences alike. No doubt, the film will definitely rake in the moolah. But the polarising opinions were quite uncharacteristic of a Rajinikanth SPECTACLE FILMS ARE FAILING?What made 2025 particularly devastating was not just the failures of tent-pole films but the collapse of what were once established formulas. Back in those days, the director-actor combination and their reunions were just enough. They not only guarantee a grand opening, but also serve as the crowd-pulling factor. But these criticisms and box office flops highlight several issues plaguing Tamil cinema. Take a look:advertisementEvolving audiences' preferences: Over the last decade, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, audiences have been fed up with formulaic approaches. Neither star power nor a monstrous budget with an ensemble cast and crew guarantee triumphs star power: Barring a few big-budget films, it was the small and medium-budget films that outperformed these star vehicles this year. This also suggests a fundamental shift in what audiences are seeking these of pan-Indian films: After the Covid-19 pandemic, there was increasing pressure among directors and the film industry to create pan-Indian content. This desire dilutes authenticity, which once made regional cinema and OTT takeover: The rising production costs and the star salaries, too, contribute to these box office failures as they take up a significant portion of the budget. After the OTT takeover, the shortened theatrical windows also affected the audience turnout in LIES AHEAD: REINVENTION OR CRISIS?With just four months to go for 2026, Kollywood is at a crossroads. For an industry to flourish, big-budget spectacle films should also succeed, so that it enables films of smaller/medium budgets to be made. In 2025 (so far), this balance was off by so many no, the question isn't whether these celebrated artistes and technicians can bounce back - they have proved themselves and all it takes is one script that will strike gold. But, the real question that looms over Tamil cinema is whether the industry and audiences are ready to embrace a new paradigm shift where content trumps stardom, authenticity trumps grandeur, and box office collections are not the only yardstick to measure success.2025 is the year that documented the fall of the giants, but it could just be a temporary setback. If filmmakers fail to reinvent and rediscover the soul of Tamil cinema, then Kollywood might face a content crisis like Bollywood. Will Tamil cinema analyse the changing trends and make corrections? Only time will tell.- EndsMust Watch
