Tigers hope rookie Troy Melton can provide spark vs. Pirates

Reuters23-07-2025
July 23 - The Detroit Tigers are looking for something to break them out of their recent struggles. They will turn to prospect Troy Melton, who will make his major league debut on Wednesday afternoon against the host Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series.
Melton, the Tigers' No. 10-ranked prospect per MLB.com, will oppose Pirates lefty Bailey Falter (6-5, 4.00 ERA) as Detroit attempts to regroup from a stretch of eight losses in its past nine games.
The Pirates will try to secure their fourth three-game series sweep of the season. They have won nine of their past 12 home games.
Whether it's one time or multiple starts for Melton, the Tigers would like to get a good look at their 24-year-old right-hander, who compiled a 2.72 ERA with 56 strikeouts and nine walks in 36 1/3 innings for Triple-A Toledo.
Before being promoted, Melton recorded a 3.23 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 11 walks in 39 innings over 10 starts for Double-A Erie.
Melton, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft by the Tigers out of San Diego State, has an opportunity to perhaps secure a spot in the rotation or as a long reliever down the stretch for a Detroit squad that still holds a comfortable lead in the American League Central despite its recent struggles.
The Tigers' current rotation consists of Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Reese Olson, Casey Mize and Keider Montero.
"We've been monitoring him the last few starts," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said of Melton on Monday. "His stuff has gotten better. His fastball command has gotten better. The punchouts have been there."
Falter had a spectacular month of May when he went 3-0 with a 0.76 ERA in six starts. Since then, he has gone 2-2 with a 5.60 ERA in eight starts (35 1/3 innings).
Over his three July starts, Falter is 0-2 with a 6.28 ERA, having allowed 11 runs (10 earned) in 14 1/3 innings. He yielded seven home runs in those three games after allowing nine over his first 17 starts.
In his most recent start, on Friday in the Pirates' first game after the All-Star break, Falter surrendered four runs on six hits, including two home runs, walked one and struck out two over four innings in a 10-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
Falter faced the Tigers for the first time on June 17 at Detroit. He gave up three runs on five hits, including two home runs, walked one and struck out four over five innings.
"(He needs to) continue to be committed to his fastball. Pitching in and pitching up is his go-to," Pirates manager Don Kelly said. "Finding ways to attack the strike zone, getting ahead. Makes it really tough as a pitcher whenever you're behind in a count. We have to be ahead, and we've done a good job of that for most of the year."
Javier Baez, who returned to Detroit's lineup on Tuesday after missing one game with a sore left shoulder, has two home runs in three career at-bats against Falter.

A shock quarterback is crowned DailyMail+ Power List's most popular, another future Hall of Famer comes dead last... and Patrick Mahomes falls out of sight

No position on the football field is more crucial than the quarterback. If your team doesn't have a good one, you can forget about winning a Super Bowl. It's why every starter in the league is automatically regarded as the face of their franchise - and why each of them operates under a brighter spotlight than any other player in the locker room. Behind Yu Darvish, Padres seek to rebound vs. D-backs

August 5 - San Diego right-hander Yu Darvish was dominant in his last start, and the Padres hope it's a good sign as they look to sort their rotation for a playoff run. Darvish (1-3, 6.46 ERA) will oppose Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson (6-3, 3.20) in the second game of a three-game series in Phoenix on Tuesday night. The D-backs won the series opener 6-2 Monday when Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas homered and Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in two runs apiece. Arizona has won three straight games after losing six in a row. "There is so much season left," Carroll said. "The things that we do for the rest of this year will carry forward into 2026. To see some things trend the right way in a season where they haven't so far, that's important." Darvish limited the New York Mets to two singles in seven scoreless innings in a 5-0 victory last Wednesday, when he struck out seven and did not walk a batter while throwing only 76 pitches. "Looked like the Yu Darvish I've been playing behind the last five years," Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Just awesome." Darvish has made only five starts this season after being delayed because of right elbow inflammation suffered in spring training, and his return to form would be a welcome turn. No. 2 starter Michael King (4-2, 2.59 ERA) has not pitched since May 18 because of right shoulder and thoracic nerve injuries, and No. 1 Dylan Cease has been in and out (4-10, 4.60) of form. Joe Musgrove, who underwent Tommy John surgery last October, threw a bullpen session Saturday and hopes to return for the postseason if the Padres advance. Cease was rumored to be a trade candidate at the July 31 deadline, but the Padres went in other directions. Cease is a free agent after this season, and King holds a mutual option with the Padres for 2026. Darvish remains a key member of a rotation that was bolstered by the addition of left-handers JP Sears and Nestor Cortes at the deadline. Darvish, who gave up 17 runs in 16 2/3 innings in his first four starts, said he used a lower arm angle against the Mets after trying it in his bullpen season between starts. "So I went into the game with a different arm slot than usual, and it worked," Darvish said. "So all in all, I'm happy about that." Darvish's win against the Mets was his 111th in the major leagues and the 204th in his career, including his time in Nippon Professional Baseball, breaking Hiroki Kuroda's record for the most by a Japanese-born player. "It means a lot," Darvish said. Darvish is 9-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 20 career starts against the Diamondbacks, his most appearances against any opponent. He lost to them 6-3 in his 2025 debut on July 7, giving up two runs in 3 2/3 innings. Nelson appears to have established himself as a long-term member of the D-backs' rotation since stepping in for good for Corbin Burnes in early June. Nelson is 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA in his last nine starts, beginning with a 5-1 victory over San Diego at Chase Field on June 13. He is 4-3 with a 5.03 ERA in 10 appearances, nine starts, against the Padres, and has won his last two. --Field Level Media

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris slammed to the ground by his own player in brutal hit

Raheem Morris tried to guard Falcons wide receiver Drake London at practice on Monday - and it didn't go too well for the Atlanta head coach. Morris, 48, formerly played college football at Hofstra and has more than two decades of NFL coaching experience. But he was little match for his team's No. 1 receiver during a drill on Monday as he tried to man up on London. As seen in footage from Fox 5 Atlanta, London took the matchup seriously as he fought through some press coverage from his coach and shoved him to the ground. Morris, however, was in good spirits afterwards as he laughed while picking himself up off the ground. He then manned up against Ray-Ray McCloud before appearing to have some playful words with London, who was by then out of the camera frame. Advantage Drake lol — Miles Garrett (@MilesGarrettTV) August 4, 2025 Morris will be hoping to lead Atlanta into the playoffs in his second full season as head coach after the team went 8-9 and missed the postseason in 2024. Unlike last year, the team will start the season with Michael Penix under center, after the former University of Washington standout took over the quarterback job from Kirk Cousins in Week 16. London, meanwhile, will look to build off of a career-best year at wide receiver, after he racked up 100 receptions, 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns last year for Atlanta. Only three players - Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and Brian Thomas - finished with more receiving yards than him during the 2024 regular season. The Falcons, who are holding training camp at their practice facility in Flowery Branch, Georgia, will kick off their preseason on Friday against the Lions. They'll host the Buccaneers in Week 1 of the regular season on September 7.
