SEMPORNA: The prolonged basic infrastructure issues in Sabah could jeopardise the State's future, including the education sector and foreign investment, said Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. He said long-standing water problems, including at higher learning institutions like Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), continue to burden students.
Advertisement 'In several meetings with university students, they raised their concerns over this issue. Some are forced to buy mineral water or rely on donations just for bathing and drinking. 'This not only affects their comfort but also disrupts their focus on their studies,' he said after officiating the SPM 2024 Excellence Incentive and Appreciation Programme, here. Shafie said remedial measures such as terminating concession contracts and absorbing more than 1,000 contract workers into the department had been done before, but the problem remains unresolved. 'The State's water problem has dragged on for years, mainly due to management weaknesses, including at the Sabah Water Department. 'Basic infrastructure issues like this not only affect the people's comfort but also impact State investments,' he said. Shafie also touched on the sharp increase in cooking gas cylinder prices, which have now soared to over RM70 per unit. 'Sabah is the second largest gas producer after Sarawak. It is unfair that our own people should bear this high cost,' he said. He said he would raise the issue in the upcoming Parliament session. During the event, more than 100 top SPM 2024 students from across Semporna were celebrated. Shafie expressed pride in their achievements and said he would continue to support efforts to develop the State's education sector. He also urged all parties to work together and not sideline local leaders in advancing the sector. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KOTA KINABALU: Zara Qairina Mahathir's family legal team will apply to be included in the inquest proceedings into her death. They welcomed the Attorney-General's Chambers' decision to hold the inquest under Section 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code to determine the cause of death and whether any criminal elements were involved. The lawyers — Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M Borhan and Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi — said in a statement on Wednesday that the decision met all the requests made in their 5 August 2025 letter to the Chambers. Drone debris causes fire at Russian refinery, 46 drones downed

A small fire ignited by debris from a destroyed drone was promptly doused at the Slavyansk oil refinery in Russia's region of Krasnodar, authorities said on Wednesday. Russia's air defence units destroyed 46 Ukrainian drones overnight, the defence ministry said on Telegram, including five over the Krasnodar region. The ministry reports only drones downed, not the number launched by Ukraine. 'There are no casualties reported,' the administration said on the Telegram messaging app. 'The fire was promptly extinguished. Emergency and special services are working at the scene.' A car caught fire at the refinery, the regional administration added in its post. Reuters was not able to independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, which says its strikes inside Russia aim to destroy infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts, including energy facilities. The Slavyansk refinery is a private plant with a capacity of around 100,000 barrels per day, supplying fuel for both domestic use and export. The overnight Ukrainian drone attack also targeted Russia's southern region of Volgograd, the regional governor said. Drone debris fell on a 16-story residential building in the city of Volgograd, forcing residents to leave their homes, the governor, Andrei Bocharov, said on Telegram. The city of Volgograd is the administrative centre of the broader region of the same name. The Russian defence ministry said its units destroyed 11 drones overnight over Volgograd. - Reuters

Stick to trusted news sources: Bernama boss

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: Musa (right) receiving a souvenir from Wong. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman on Tuesday received a courtesy call from Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai at Istana Seri Kinabalu, here. Wong's visit, which was his first since Musa took office as the 11th Governor of Sabah in January, was also accompanied by Bernama Sabah Bureau Chief Fadzli Ramli, journalist Noorazlina Jindeh and photographer Zamain Singkui. The 40-minute meeting was conducted in a warm and cordial atmosphere. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Wong said discussions with the Governor focused on the role of government media agencies in combating the spread of fake news, particularly on social media. The meeting also touched on the exchange of views and ideas, as well as current issues in Sabah, and how to enhance news coverage to counter misinformation more effectively. 'As government media, agencies like Bernama, RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia) and the Department of Information (Japen) must work to improve the quality of news coverage in Sabah, especially as the State continues to face a wide range of issues - political, social, developmental and economic,' he said. Wong stressed that it is vital for government media to provide accurate and trustworthy information, especially in the face of misinformation and politically charged narratives that often circulate online. 'As a government news agency, Bernama - along with RTM - must ensure that the information we deliver is factual and responsible, as social media is often flooded with inaccurate and misleading stories,' he added, reiterating that official media outlets remain reliable sources of information. Musa, a former Chief Minister, was sworn in as the State's Governor for a four-year term beginning Jan 1, 2025. He succeeded Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, who served four terms from Jan 1, 2011, until his tenure ended on Dec 31, 2024. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
