2025 Michigan State Football Predictions: Spartans Ranked 97th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where Michigan State lands in my Ultimate 136.
Michigan State ranking: 97
Last year's ranking: 82
Top player: WR Nick Marsh: Set MSU true freshman records last season in receiving yards (649) and receptions (41).

RJ's take: If QB Aidan Chiles and WR Nick Marsh can play the two-man game where Chiles throws for an average of 250 a game – but 150 are to Marsh – 4-0 is there for Jonathan Smith's Spartans. The toughest games on its schedule this season are when Penn State and Michigan come to East Lansing — no Ohio State, no Oregon.
The Spartans receive an early opportunity to throw down a marker at USC on Sept. 20, a program it beat the last time the Greeks clashed in 1990 – a 17-16 Sun Bowl victory for the men of Leonidas over Hector's men of Troy. Sure, there's Boston College in the non-conference before USC, but that's it.

The margins are thin and the Michigan State race car isn't that fast. But there's lap time left to find, and who knows just who they could make flinch in wheel-to-wheel combat? Send it, Spartans.

We're talking about the Heisman. So Ben, give me some of the favorites out there to be in New York at the end of the season. Yeah, no surprise picks, right? Arch Manning at Texas, the favorite right now, plus 600, as you would expect, one of the most hyped prospects coming in. We've seen him play a little bit in previous seasons, but now he's got the reins at Texas, which should be an amazing team. And they get to face week one Ohio State. So you're going to see right off the bat, he's gonna have a chance to potentially take that Heisman leap, and we'll see where his odds go depending on his performance. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, the second choice, tied with Clemson quarterback Cade Klumnik at 9 to 1. And then Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith at 10 to 1. Always difficult for wide receivers to win the Heisman. Not many have done it over the past 15 to 20 years, but he's arguably the best offensive player in the country. Barely guardable, I would say. If anyone in college football can do it, can they get him the ball enough is going to be the question. Can he put up those stats to compete with the other quarterbacks? What about a dark horse that's maybe a little off the beaten path? Yeah, I think South Carolina quarterback Lenori Sellers is 16 to 1. Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is also taking some money. He's down to 18 to 1. And I know our guy Corby Craig at Yahoo likes Avery Johnson from Kansas State at 40 to 1. Part of the reason as well, he gets that week one game, that showcase game on ESPN against Iowa State. So if he comes out big in that game, you're not gonna see those 40 to 1 odds last very long. Yeah, we're always looking for Heisman moments, and you're right, that's a great one to give, but maybe it'll give us some Vogue in the meantime also. Close

College football betting - Who are the national title favorites?

View more Video Transcript The college football season is finally here, and that means we get to talk about national championships. Ben, who's the favorite right now? Texas fits, uh, as you would expect, right? No, this, uh, this hasn't happened in a long time. Texas is the favorite, plus 500 at Bet MGM. Ohio State just behind them, plus 525, with Georgia and Penn State at 7 to 1, Oregon and Clemson, the next best odds at 9 to 1. Uh, Alabama 10 to 1, Notre Dame 12 to 1, and we'll certainly see a lot of movement, right? Texas plays Ohio State week one. Ohio State 2.5 to 3 point favorite, depending on the book that you're looking at. So one's gonna rise a little bit, one will fall a little bit after that first week. I think Clemson's another fascinating one. They opened at 30 to 1 at one sportsbook out in Vegas. They're now down to 12 to 1 there. One oddsmaker told me it's been kind of an off-season love affair with Clemson. Another book said his highest liability is on Clemson, so a lot of bets as well for Clemson at a couple different books. It's amazing how many huge brands you've already named in this, so it's gonna be an exciting year. Where's the money going right now? Yeah, a lot of, I, I think even though you have the 12-team college football playoff, bets really only think they're, you know, 4 to 6 teams that really have a realistic chance at winning, right? They're just, there's kind of the cream of the crop. And so at Bet MGM, as you would kind of expect, Texas number one in bets, Texas number one in money, Texas, the biggest liability at Bet MGM. You also have Penn State, though, Ohio State and Clemson as some of those teams with the most bets, and fifth, Notre Dame. Uh, but for a lot of, you know, I think you always like to measure the liability, right? What do the sportsbooks stand to lose? Texas number one liability like. Like I said, Penn State number two, Clemson three, LSU and Alabama, who you kind of forget, Alabama still, still out there, you know, they've been rising a little bit. We're 12 to 1 last week, now 10 to 1 at Bet MGM, but Texas is certainly the one that they want to avoid right now, even with those short odds. Let's go full Dumb and Dumber. So you're telling me there's a chance. Like, give me a, give me a long shot that can make a surprise run. I said, why not South Carolina, right? This is a quarterback-driven sport, and certainly, Lenora Sellers is a potential Heisman quarterback, Heisman candidate. We saw him put it together against Clemson last year and had some big performances, and South Carolina, they play seven projected top 21 teams by Bill Connolly's SP+ in their final nine games. So, in other words, they're gonna have the schedule to prove it. Whether or not they win enough of those games to make the playoff and make a run is a different question, but they'll have the spotlight, they'll have the schedule, they just need the results. College football betting - Notable team win totals
Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and senior sports betting analyst Ben Fawkes take a look at how the sportsbooks are ranking certain teams for this season - including Alabama, Colorado, North Carolina and Michigan. View more Video Transcript With college football finally here, that means we get to take a look at some notable team totals out there for some of the programs you love paying attention to. Let's go through some of them, Ben. Where are we on Colorado right now? Because it feels like everybody used to talk about Colorado, but this year it's kind of quiet so far. Yeah, quiet everywhere except the betting market, I, would say. So Colorado opened very early at 6.5 at Bet MGM. They've been 5.5 for their over under for a while. You don't see this very often, but they have the most tickets or the most bets of any under and the most tickets of any over, right? And just to show you how close this is, 49% of the bets on the over, 51% on the under. So essentially 50/50, meaning a lot of people have a lot of opinions about Colorado. Somebody's going to be right, somebody's gonna be wrong. Uh, this also is the most under money of any. Win total, so at least a couple big bets on the under as well. All right, what about rolling tide? Where are we on Alabama? Are we rolling up, we rolling down? What's it look like? Yeah, Alabama. This opened 8.5 with a lot of juice, minus 190 at that MGM. They did move it up to 9.5, 70% of the bets and 80% of the money so far on the over. Uh, so again, the over 8.5 and then some of the over 9.5, not 8. Not the best first season for Kaylin DeBoer in Tuscaloosa, but Alabama has a lot of talent. They returned 19 defenders who had at least 200 snaps, and their defense was ranked by Bill Connolly, #8 overall last season. So a good team, obviously questions that quarterback, but there's still a ton of talent at Alabama in a very difficult conference, but to have a number, Alabama 8.5 is a very low number to open, certainly for that team. It feels like it was a lifetime ago they won a national championship. Now, where are we on Michigan? Yeah, Michigan's over/under is 8.5, uh, a lot of wagers on the under so far at Bet MGM, 70% of the money as well. This is the second most under, uh, team total of all the college football teams. So a lot of people going on the under from Michigan. They are missing their top two rushers from last season. They lost a lot on the offensive line. And again, quarterback questions in a tough Big 10. 10. What about the fighting Belichicks? We are, we've got to pay attention to North Carolina this year. This year. North Carolina, uh, I'm in the process of reporting a piece on this. I think they're one of the most fascinating teams, you know, uh, teams in college football. Obviously Bill Belichick there. This is also one of the biggest movers. So they opened with a win total of 7.5, still 7.5, but it opened -130 to the over at Bet MGM. They're now -165 to the under, so a ton of movement to the under. 60% of bets, 70% of the money at Bet MGM on under 7.5, the third most total bets on the under of any team. Talking to a handicapper, he had a great line. He said, Look, Tom Brady ain't walking through that door in Chapel Hill. And one oddsmaker said this is a lot of movement based off of sharp action. He's already moved UNC's power rating from where he had it early on to now down 4.5 points. And week one, they opened as a 2.5 point favorite against TCU in their first game. They're now a 3 point underdog, right, just based off of betting and some public perception. So a lot of movement for UNC, not all of it good right now for Belichick. Close
