COIMBATORE: A SpiceJet flight from Dubai to Kochi was diverted to Coimbatore International Airport on Friday night due to bad weather at
Cochin International Airport
. The flight, carrying 181 passengers, was scheduled to land at Kochi at 6.25pm on Friday but was diverted to Coimbatore, where it landed around 7.30pm.
Passengers alleged that no food and water had been provided to them till 1am on Saturday. 'There were many elderly passengers and children among us. When we asked airline officials, they told us to wait till Saturday afternoon for a flight to Kochi and said that accommodation would be arranged,' said a passenger in a video that went viral on social media.
Videos of passengers arguing with airline staff were widely shared online.
Around 2am on Saturday, cabs were arranged to transport around 60 passengers from Coimbatore to Kochi. Others reportedly arranged their own transportation.
When contacted, a SpiceJet official said, 'We arranged cabs for around 60 passengers to reach Kochi. Arranging vehicles for all passengers took some time. So, some chose to travel on their own. Since it was an odd time, only sandwiches, juice, soft drinks and biscuits were available with our caterer, and we provided those items to the passengers.'
The flight departed for Kochi at 3pm on Saturday.

Long I-Day weekend boosts local tourism

1 2 Ranchi: The I-Day weekend turned Ranchi and its neighbouring destinations into a buzzing tourist circuit, as thousands of visitors poured into waterfalls, valleys, lakes, and resorts. With three back-to-back holidays, families, students, and travel enthusiasts grabbed the window to escape into nature. From Jonha, Dassam, and Hundru Falls to Patratu Valley and the misty plateau of Netarhat, popular sites were choked with vehicles. Roadside tea stalls and local eateries did brisk business, while dhabas on the Ranchi-Ramgarh stretch overflowed with customers. "The monsoon makes the waterfalls come alive. The spray of water at Dassam was so strong, it felt like a natural shower. I was not tired of clicking selfies," said Priyanka Gupta, a visitor from Ramgarh. At Netarhat, also known as the 'Queen of Chotanagpur', tourists were disappointed at missing the famous sunrise and sunset views due to cloudy skies. But they quickly switched plans. "Since the skies are foggy, people are heading in large numbers to Jodh Falls, which has become the real crowd-puller this weekend," said Abdul Wahab, manager of the Jharkhand Tourism-run Prabhat Vihar Resort. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "All our 24 rooms were sold out on Friday and Saturday, and 22 were pre-booked for Sunday. In three days, our earnings will easily cross Rs 10 lakh, inclusive of all taxes." The boom was equally visible at Patratu Lake Resort, where boating and the view of the valley view kept tourists hooked. With 40 rooms booked for all three days, the resort saw a surge in revenue. "If you include the restaurant, entry tickets, and parking, our daily turnover has exceeded Rs lakh," said Jharkhand Tourism-run Lake Resort's manager, Arun Kumar. However, the surge brought challenges too. To ensure safety, police tightened vigilance on the Patratu route. "We carried out helmet checks, stopped youngsters performing stunts, and kept a watch after recent reports of chain snatching. Our priority was to ensure tourists enjoy the valley without any fear," said Abhay Singh, officer-in-charge of Pithoria police station. Despite the checks, the mood stayed festive. Families spread picnic sheets near Hundru, groups trekked around Jonha's trails, and couples enjoyed long drives through the valley's green curves. For many, the three-day break is less about the calendar and more about rediscovering Ranchi's monsoon magic. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Safari vehicles in R'bore granted 1-year extension

1 2 Jaipur: Forest department has granted a one-year extension to safari vehicles in Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. According to the order, the field director must ensure that vehicles permitted for safaris are safe, suitable for tourism, and meet prescribed safari standards before allowing the extension. Officials said the model validity of these vehicles will expire in 2026, after which they will not be permitted for tourism operations. However, following requests from associations and the absence of practical alternatives, a temporary extension was provided. "Tourists prefer Gypsies due to their manoeuvrability and suitability for rugged terrain. With the extension, Gypsies will continue for one safari season starting Oct 1," an official said. Currently, 556 vehicles are registered for tourism at Ranthambhore, including 269 Gypsies and 287 Canters. The Ranthambhore Vehicle Safari Owners' Union earlier submitted a memorandum to the forest department seeking an extension. The challenge, however, lies in the fact that Gypsy manufacturing was discontinued in 2016. While diesel vehicles are available in the market, their higher emissions make them unsuitable for protected areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Officials said a petrol-based model was expected to emerge as an alternative, as petrol vehicles typically cause less pollution and are considered more compatible with eco-sensitive tourism. But no viable petrol option was developed, leaving both the department and safari operators without a substitute. Forest officials noted that a similar directive was earlier issued for replacing old Canters with newer models. Implementation was delayed due to the ongoing tourist season, but an extension was provided. With several companies offering Canters with improved technology and lower emissions, the department directed that alternatives be explored. Officials admit that unless a suitable petrol or eco-friendly vehicle is identified, both forest department and safari operators may face uncertainty when the validity of Gypsies ends in 2026. Ngp-Pune Vande Bharat Oversubscribed, Waiting List Crosses 150 for Sunday Journey

Nagpur: The newly launched Vande Bharat Express, connecting Nagpur and Pune, has turned into a runaway success within days of its introduction, with waiting lists already exceeding 150 for Sunday. A TOI check of the booking status revealed that the Nagpur–Pune Vande Bharat Express had a staggering waiting list of 153 passengers in chair car (CC) class by Saturday evening, while Tuesday's service already had 33 people on the waitlist. Executive chair car (ECC) tickets also showed a waiting list. The service does not operate on Mondays. The ECC seat costs around ₹3,815—higher than even many AC first-tier fares in sleeper trains on the route. The overwhelming response has even outshone older Vande Bharat services from Nagpur. The Nagpur–Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express had a waiting list of 61 for Sunday and 19 for Monday, while the Nagpur–Bilaspur Vande Bharat Express, which offers greater seating capacity than the Nagpur–Pune train, had no waiting list at all. Seat availability stood at 401 and 750 in chair cars for Sunday and Monday, respectively. The earnings, too, reflect this surge in popularity. In just the first two days of operation, the Nagpur–Pune Vande Bharat clocked an impressive revenue of ₹18.60 lakh, with occupancy levels crossing 134% when accounting for waiting list bookings. A railway official confirmed that the train has been running at near-full capacity since its launch and is expected to continue doing so during the upcoming festive season. Passenger accounts also highlight the train's significance during peak travel days. "Many people came for Rakhi and stayed back because of the Independence Day long weekend. The Vande Bharat is proving to be a boon in this situation. In the coming festive season, it will play an important role for travellers," said Aniket Pawar, a techie from Wardha currently working in Pune.
