A man has been handed an eight-month suspended jail term for trying to cycle cross the Tour de France finish line on stage 17 this week, the public prosecutor told AFP on Friday.
The 30-year-old prankster attempted to ride across the finish line just minutes before the final sprint in Valence in southeastern France on Wednesday.
Police and race security rushed to intercept the individual who was wearing a black helmet and a Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale team jersey.
He was sentenced for "entering a sports competition area and disrupting the competition, refusing to comply and assaulting a person in a position of public authority," prosecutor Laurent de Caigny said.
The incident occurred just minutes before the peloton's sprint finish, which was already underway at full speed, with Italian rider Jonathan Milan winning on the day.
The man, who has already been "convicted three times," is also banned from entering any sports venue for five years, the prosecutor added without providing further details.
He was ordered to pay 500 euros ($586) in damages to the police officer who fell while attempting to stop him.

Ghana's Partey granted bail on rape charges - Africa

Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday after appearing in a London court on rape and sexual assault charges. The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey was charged four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June. The midfielder stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court, wearing a black zip-neck jumper. British police said they first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said he "denies all the charges against him", adding he welcomed "the opportunity to finally clear his name". Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million ($60 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. Overall he played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times. Partey has also made 51 appearances for Ghana. An Arsenal spokesman previously said: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case." Reports in recent days have linked Partey with a move to Spanish club Villarreal. Sudan accuses UAE of bringing in Colombian mercenaries to support RSF - War in Sudan

Sudan accused the United Arab Emirates on Monday of hiring Colombian mercenaries to fight against the government-aligned army on behalf of its rival, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Since April 2023, the war between the Sudanese army and the RSF has killed tens of thousands of people and created the world's largest hunger and displacement crises. It has also drawn widespread accusations of foreign involvement -- namely, Abu Dhabi's backing of the RSF. "The government of Sudan possesses all the documents and evidence proving the involvement of mercenaries from Colombia and some neighbouring countries, sponsored and funded by the UAE," the foreign ministry said Monday. The UAE has repeatedly denied allegations of arming the RSF, despite reports to the contrary from UN experts, diplomats, US politicians and international organisations. Mercenaries have been spotted on both sides, with reports of Colombian fighters first emerging in the western region of Darfur late last year and corroborated by United Nations experts. This week, the Joint Forces -- a coalition of armed groups in Darfur aligned with the army -- reported more than 80 Colombian mercenaries fighting on the RSF's side in the North Darfur state capital El-Fasher. The coalition said "several Colombian mercenaries involved in drone operations and artillery coordination were killed" in the most recent RSF attempt to seize the city, which it has besieged for over a year. El-Fasher is the last state capital in Darfur still under control of the army, which on Sunday released video footage it said was of "foreign mercenaries believed to be from Colombia". AFP was not immediately able to verify the videos. The ministry said on Monday that it had previously submitted evidence of the foreign fighters' involvement to the UN Security Council, adding their presence was making the conflict a "cross-border terrorist war waged by proxy". A report this year from UN experts monitoring an ongoing arms embargo on Darfur called the accusations of Colombian mercenaries fighting for the RSF credible. Sudan said in December that the Colombian foreign ministry had extended its regret "for the participation of some of its citizens in the war", according to Sudan's state news agency. Retired Colombian soldiers and ex-guerrillas -- hardened by more than half a century of conflict back home -- have turned up in recent years in conflicts in Ukraine, Haiti and Afghanistan. They have previously been recruited by the UAE to fight Huthi rebels in Yemen and to guard oil pipelines in the wealthy Gulf state, according to AFP reporting. US Closes Embassy in Haiti Amid Gunfire

Israa Farhan The United States has temporarily closed its embassy in Haiti following intense gunfire near its diplomatic compound in the capital, Port-au-Prince, amid escalating gang violence in the region. In a statement published on X (formerly Twitter), the US State Department confirmed the closure and advised American personnel to remain inside the embassy. The message cited reports of heavy gunfire in the Tabarre district, located near the US Embassy and close to Port-au-Prince International Airport in the northeastern part of the city. 'Due to reports of sustained gunfire near the US Embassy in Tabarre, all official movements by US government personnel have been suspended. The public is advised to avoid the area,' the statement read. The closure comes as Haiti continues to suffer from spiraling violence driven by armed criminal gangs. According to a July report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 3,141 people were killed across the country between January 1 and June 30, 2025. The UN warned of further unrest as gang activity continues to expand with little state resistance. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
