Real reason Captain America star Chris Evans skipped huge premiere of his new film in Cannes

Daily Mail2 days ago

Chris Evans was noticeably missing from the world premiere of his new film Honey Don't during the 78th Cannes Film Festival in France last Friday.
The retired Captain America - turning 44 next month - did not provide an explanation for his absence until Sunday morning.
'I wish I could've been with my incredible cast and filmmakers at Cannes,' Chris - who boasts 17.4M Instagram followers - wrote.
'But it was my mother's 70th birthday and there are some things you just can't miss! Congrats everyone!'
Evans is very close with his divorced mother Lisa, who fostered his creativity from an early age by installing a tap floor in the basement of their Sudbury, MA house.

The former pro dancer currently works as artistic director for the Concord Youth Theater where the Red One action star sits on the advisory board and his sister Shanna is a costume designer.
Lisa loved 'bragging about' Chris being named People's Sexiest Man Alive in 2022, and it was her who convinced him to take the multi-film MCU role of Steve Rogers.
'His biggest fear was losing his anonymity,' Evans (born Capuano) told Esquire in 2020.
'He said, "I have a career now where I can do work I really like. I can walk my dog. Nobody bothers me. Nobody wants to talk to me. I can go wherever I want. And the idea of losing that is terrifying to me."'
Lisa continued: 'I said to him, "Look, you want to do acting work for the rest of your life? If you do this part, you will have the opportunity. You'll never have to worry about paying the rent. If you take the part, you just have to decide, It's not going to affect my life negatively — it will enable it."'
Speaking of which, TheWrap reported that Evans would play 'an undisclosed role' in the Russo Brothers' MCU flick Avengers: Doomsday, which is already scheduled to hit US/UK theaters December 18, 2026.
Last Friday, Honey Don't director Ethan Coen climbed the grand staircase of Palais des Festivals alongside members of the cast and crew including Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, and Charlie Day.
The same group, including co-screenwriter Tricia Cooke, glammed up for the who-done-it dark comedy's photo call on Saturday.
In Honey Don't - hitting US theaters August 22 - Chris 'slips easily' into the cult leader role of Reverend Drew Devlin, but 'the film feels like a series of gags with nowhere to go' according to THR critic Lovia Gyarkye.
Last Friday, Collider critic Therese Lacson wrote that Evans presents 'one of the funniest characters' in the movie, but she 'questioned his character's purpose'- following the twisted climax.
Mashable critic Kristy Puchko agreed that the finale will 'divide critics and audiences' she called the Boston-born Buddhist 'hilarious' and his 'physicality is suitably absurd.'
From the 12 submitted reviews, Honey Don't currently has a dismal 50% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
On December 30, Chris wrapped his role as kidnapped movie star Mike Tyler in Romain Gavras' upcoming adventure comedy Sacrifice.
Evans is also credited as a producer on the flick featuring Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Charli XCX, and John Malkovich.
But first, audiences can catch the Deadpool & Wolverine actor as lovesick waiter John in Celine Song's matchmaking rom-com Materialists - hitting US theaters June 13 - alongside Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal.

Zheng subdues Samsonova to reach maiden French Open quarter-final

PARIS, June 1 (Reuters) - Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen continued her French Open campaign in battling fashion as the Chinese eighth seed overcame Russia's Liudmila Samsonova 7-6(5) 1-6 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals at Roland Garros on Sunday. Zheng swapped a pair of breaks with her 19th-seeded opponent in the opening set and fought back from 4-2 down in the tiebreak to get her nose in front before allowing big-hitting Samsonova to hold in a tense first game of the second set. The Russian broke to love in the next game and struck again later to draw level in the match, leaving Zheng with a big fight on her hands to reach her maiden Roland Garros quarter-final at the site of her Paris Games triumph last year. Zheng showed the mettle of a gold medallist, however, as the 22-year-old broke for a 4-2 lead and shrugged off a poor service game to get ahead 5-3 before securing victory when Samsonova made an unforced error. "Right now I feel incredible because I've been dreaming of reaching this stage, it did not happen in 2023 and 2024. I have no words to describe my emotions right now," said Zheng, who dropped to the ground in celebration. "The crowd helped me a lot, they gave me a lot of energy. I like to play in front of a lot of people. It gives me a lot of motivation. I hope I can stay longer in Roland Garros. "It was an intense match. She put me under a lot of pressure and I ran a lot behind the baseline. But I have a lot of energy. I can play five sets if needed. My body is feeling great and I will push till the end. Zheng takes on either world number one Aryna Sabalenka or Amanda Anisimova in the next round.

Iga Swiatek survives Elena Rybakina blitz to progress at French Open: ‘It was like playing Jannik Sinner'

Iga Swiatek looked on the brink of losing her French Open crown but recovered from a set and a break down to extend her winning run at the French Open to 25 matches. The four-time champion has not lost a match at Roland Garros since 2021, but she appeared to be heading for the exit when Elena Rybakina led 6-1 2-0. Rybakina, the former Wimbledon champion, had raced into a 5-0 lead after only 20 minutes. But in a match which eventually lasted two and a half hours, Swiatek came through 1-6 6-3 7-5. The Pole, who turned 24 on Saturday, now matches Monica Seles' 1990s run of 25 match wins at the tournament. She said: "It was tough. In the first I felt like I was playing against Jannik Sinner!" Swiatek will face Elina Svitolina, who sprung a surprise by knocking out fourth seed and last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini, in the quarter-final. The 30-year-old from Ukraine saved three match points before winning 6-4 6-7 (6) 6-1 in another dramatic match. "I would've never believed this match would swing my way," she said. "It was a really difficult match, Jasmine was playing really, really well. It was really tough. I had to fight until the last point and I'm very happy to be in the next round. "Of course it's one or two points which decided the second set. I was really pleased to win the second set and played really well to close the match. "We are at a grand slam so everyone is playing very well and everyone is fighting. It's all about trying to stay focused and finding the opportunities." Svitolina's husband, Gael Monfils, was knocked out by Jack Draper in a thrilling four-setter on Thursday night. "It's important to recover because today was a very difficult match," she added. "An ice bath, some food, speak with my brother and Gael as well, enjoy the moment with them and then practice tomorrow to prepare for my next round." Italian Paolini, who also reached the Wimbledon final last year, said: "It's a tough one. I think we played a great match. I had my chances. "She played well, I didn't. You know, it's tennis, so it's hard to accept, but I have to." PA

French authorities criticised as daily migrant arrivals top 1,000

Defence Secretary John Healey has criticised the French authorities for failing to intervene as small boats carrying migrants left beaches near Calais. More than 1,000 people crossed the English Channel in small boats on Saturday, with French police reportedly watching as migrants boarded near Calais and Dunkirk. Healey described the scenes as "shocking" and stated that Britain has "lost control of its borders" over the last five years. Ministers are reportedly pressing the French government to implement an agreement allowing them to intercept the boats, not just prevent departures from the shore. A total of 1,194 people made the journey in 18 boats on Saturday, bringing the year's provisional total to 14,811, a 42 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
