Disney's big Singapore ship is a big opportunity
The Disney Adventure, Disney's largest cruise ship yet, will begin sailing from Singapore in December. At full occupancy, the ship is expected to accommodate between 6,000 and 7,000 guests. In comparison, Disney's Wish-class ships have a capacity for about 4,000 passengers.
"This will give us an opportunity to float the Disney brand in all of its glory into a region that we think has a huge Disney brand affinity," Iger said.
In addition to the Adventure, the Disney Destiny (Disney's third Wish-class ship), will debut in November in Fort Lauderdale. The newest ship currently sailing, Disney Treasure, has "gotten off to a strong start and continues to perform well," Disney wrote in prepared executive remarks Wednesday. The Treasure began sailing last December.
"Forward bookings look great, and we're running at very high occupancies," CFO Hugh Johnston said.
Disney Cruise Line is about half booked for 2026, he said, and the percentage is even higher for its newer ships.
Domestic park spending rises
Disney Cruise Line is part of the Disney Experiences division, along with the theme parks, hotels, Disney Vacation Club, the Adventures by Disney tour operator and consumer products. The segment performed well in the quarter with operating income up 13%, to $2.5 billion.
Domestic operating income soared 22%, to $1.7 billion, driven by growth at theme parks, resorts and Disney Cruise Line. Disney attributed the bump to guests spending more at its parks as well as an increase in passenger cruise days from the Treasure. It also includes a $40 million benefit from the Easter holiday, which fell in the third fiscal quarter this year.
Disney Experiences had higher costs, including about $30 million in pre-opening expenses related to the Destiny and Treasure ships. Another $50 million in pre-opening cruise costs is expected in the fourth fiscal quarter.
Disney's theme parks, especially its domestic parks, are performing well. Executives pointed to two anniversaries and their accompanying in-park celebrations: Disneyland's 70th and Hong Kong Disneyland's 20th.
Johnston said Walt Disney World compiled record revenue in its fiscal Q3.
Asked if Disney's guest mix for domestic parks has been impacted by international visitation to the U.S. or the opening of Universal Orlando's Epic Universe in May, Johnston said there was "nothing material going on there."
Disneyland Paris is also performing strongly, according to Johnston. Next year, a new World of Frozen land will open there.
Disney has faced some headwinds in China, the CFO said, mainly because of reduced guest spending, not attendance.

Disney enters new streaming chapter
Disney on Wednesday told investors that it plans to shutter the standalone Hulu app and integrate it into its Disney+ streaming service. Why it matters: It's the latest in a string of Disney's efforts to streamline its direct-to-consumer business as it matures. Zoom in: Disney said the new, unified Disney+ and Hulu app will be available in 2026. Consumers can still buy subscriptions to the two services separately, but they will be accessed through the same interface. Hulu has traditionally housed Disney's more mature content, featuring shows from FX and ABC primetime. Disney+ has leaned into family-friendly programming. Bringing the services together will drive efficiencies for the company and a better consumer experience, Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors. "You're going to end up with a far better consumer experience when those apps are combined by combining all of the program assets of both current apps," he said. "With an improved consumer experience comes the ability to lower churn, which is obviously something that we're very, very focused on and committed to doing. We obviously will deliver efficiencies when these are together." Between the lines: The company also said it would no longer disclose quarterly paid subscriber number updates to investors, a move that other streamers like Netflix have also adopted as they try to push Wall Street to focus instead on their streaming financials. For Disney, focusing on profit will also help alleviate any concerns of saturation in the U.S. The entertainment giant on Wednesday said it now has 183 million total streaming subscribers, 128 million of which are for its core Disney+ product. But the company added no new subscribers for Disney+ in North America. ESPN+ also stayed stagnant at 24.1 million subscribers. Between the lines: For Disney, offering consumers more ways to bundle their subscriptions represents a stronger opportunity to upsell them and keep them engaged. Bringing Disney's three services together on one tech stack will give the company "price elasticity" that it didn't have before, Iger said. The big picture: Disney's transition comes as TV companies grapple with the best way to lean into streaming while preserving their cash-positive linear TV networks. Iger said the company is drawing less of a distinction between the two mediums, and is more focused on giving consumers as much choice as possible. "We're at a point, given the way we're operating our businesses, where we don't really look at being in the linear business and the streaming business. We're in the television business," Iger said. What to watch: The entertainment streaming package will also be available to bundle with ESPN's new streaming service, set to debut later this month.

Analysis-ESPN-NFL deal faces regulatory hurdles
By Jody Godoy and Dawn Chmielewski LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -The National Football League's deal with Walt Disney in which it will gain an equity stake in ESPN in return for prime media assets is expected to face scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice, according to legal experts and industry sources. The agreement, announced late Tuesday, involves Disney's ESPN acquiring the NFL Network and other media properties in exchange for the league receiving a 10 percent stake in the sports network. Andre P. Barlow, a partner at Doyle, Barlow & Mazard, said the transaction "surely raises competition concerns," because it could potentially give Disney greater control over televised sports carriage and reduce competition. "The deal could potentially result in higher costs for consumers, as Disney's dominance in sports media could limit options and drive up prices for streaming services or game access," Barlow said. The Justice Department is expected to conduct a substantive review of the new ESPN-NFL transaction, according to one source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Another source said obtaining U.S. antitrust clearance could take up to 12 months. ESPN and the NFL declined comment. The expected review comes as the Justice Department's Antitrust Division is examining a separate deal Disney reached earlier this year to acquire a controlling stake in the sports streaming service Fubo TV. The division demanded further information from the companies in March to examine whether the deal would unduly concentrate the market for sports streaming. Meanwhile, the issue of rising costs for fans as games migrate to streaming services has reached the Senate, where the Commerce Committee held a hearing in May. "In an era of deep partisan division, sports might be the most powerful cultural unifier we have," said Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who chairs the committee, noting it brings together Americans whether they're watching from their couches or in the stands. "But those millions of fans are asking a simple question: 'Why does it seem to be getting harder -- and more expensive -- to just watch the game?'" John Bergmayer, legal director of the non-profit Public Knowledge, voiced the same concerns. "The proliferation of streaming services -- and the fragmentation of content between them -- means that the costs of watching streaming video are rising, and for many people can approach what they were paying on their cable bill," said Bergmayer in testimony to the committee. "Some viewers feel like they finally broke free of the cable bundle only to watch it re-forming (before) their eyes." ESPN STREAMING SERVICE The NFL has done outreach to 30 congressional offices to discuss the terms of its deal with ESPN and how it would result in greater consumer choice, according to one of the sources. Under the agreement, ESPN would be able to add the NFL Network to its breadth of sports programming and incorporate it as part of its ESPN-branded streaming service. ESPN also plans to merge its fantasy football offering with that of the NFL. ESPN also will be able to distribute the NFL's RedZone to cable and satellite TV distributors, along with its other channels. The NFL will retain streaming rights to NFL RedZone, which is available online through YouTube TV. Disney won swift approval for its $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets in 2018, during President Donald Trump's first term, though it was required to divest Fox's 22 regional sports networks to address competition concerns. At the time, Trump called to congratulate the Fox's Rupert Murdoch on the deal. "It was worked out in record time," said Barlow, adding that this time around, he expects the Justice Department "to take a close look before approving the deal." One recent media deal, the $8.4 billion merger of Paramount Global and Skydance Media, became bogged down in a lengthy regulatory review, as President Donald Trump sued Paramount, claiming the CBS News program "60 Minutes" deceptively edited an interview with his Democratic rival for the White House, former Vice President Kamala Harris. The Federal Communications Commission approved the transaction within days of Trump receiving a $16 million settlement, though FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the civil suit and regulatory review were unrelated. Politics could complicate the deal. Some sports industry insiders pointed to Trump's threats to interfere with a deal to build a new football stadium in Washington, D.C., unless the local NFL team, now known as the Commanders, changes its name back to Redskins, which was abandoned after decades of criticism that it was a racial slur. ESPN is currently 80 percent owned by ABC Inc as an indirect subsidiary of Disney, with the other 20% owned by Hearst. If the deal is approved, ABC's stake would drop to 72 percent and Hearst would fall to 18 percent to grant the NFL a 10 percent stake.
