Fearne Cotton reveals she felt 'lost' at the height of BBC Radio 1 fame

Daily Mirror21-04-2025

Fearne Cotton has opened up about falling into a depression and struggling with fame after leaving her Radio 1 job back in 2015, admitting she suffered an identity crisis
Fearne Cotton says she almost gave up on showbusiness after failing to reach the flying success of presenting idols Ant and Dec - recalling how she struggled with fame and felt confused about what was next.
The former Radio 1 presenter, w ho split from her husband Jesse Wood in December last year, admitted in a new episode of her Happy Place podcast to feeling 'lost' in her early thirties, despite having become a household name through her role as a TV presenter.

She said, "I got to this point where I found myself just really not liking what I was doing, finding the feedback loop of being on the radio and in the public eye, excruciating. I started to inflate other people's view of me with what I knew to be true about myself. Which is dangerous, really dangerous."
"I thought every negative thing said about me was true. I left radio and I just thought, 'What am I doing? What is the point of any of this?'
"And I honestly thought at that point, 'Maybe I just quit everything because it's all too painful'. And I wrote a book called Happy, and that was the first time I really spoke about anything remotely real, because you can't really do on the radio," continued Fearne.
"This is the first time where I said, 'Actually this is what's going on' rather than me just saying 'morning' and playing some happy music. It was like, actually, I'm going home and I'm crying and I don't know who I am anymore. I was in a real period of proper depression and on antidepressants".
After writing her 2017 book Happy, Fearne says she began to come out of the depression and found a love for work again, having since expanded the book into a Happy Place lifestyle brand.

It's not the first time Fearne has spoken about her battles with depression and mental health, often drawing on her own experiences when interviewing fellow celebrities on her podcast.
Last year, Fearne split from her husband of ten years Jesse Wood, whom she shares children Rex and Honey with.

While Fearne nor Jesse have shared why they ended their marriage, they did share a statement at the time which read: "It is with a heavy heart that I let you all know that Jesse and I are ending our marriage. Our priority has been and always will be our children. We please ask that you respect the privacy of our family at this time."
The break-up came five years after Fearne opened up about marital troubles they had faced in the past, writing in a column for Red Magazine at the time: "Love takes hard work - and no one wants to hear that. This year, Jesse and I hit a rough patch - he was away, touring relentlessly, [with his band, Reef].
"I was trying to keep my own career going while looking after our kids and we were both desperately clinging on to our marriage."

Kerry Katona shows true colours over Katie Price friendship after cancelled tour

OK! Magazine columnist Kerry Katona appears to have thrown shade at her long-term friend Katie Price after their joint upcoming tour was cancelled as she says she's finally 'back on track' Kerry Katona has shared her thoughts on some of the latest hot topics in showbiz, including Chris Martin's shock split with Dakota Johnson after eight years, Jessie J's breast cancer diagnosis, Jamie Laing becoming a first-time-dad, and Kerry herself feeling 'back on track' after her joint tour with long-term friend Katie Price was recently cancelled. Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson's shock split I was sad to read about Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson's split, I thought they made a really nice couple and seemed very happy. I hope they're both doing OK. I really like Chris and his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. ‌ I think they're such a great family and it's amazing how they have managed to co-parent their kids and stay friends. I take my hat off to anyone who can do that, I wish I could have. ‌ I always wish Brian and I could have stayed friends. Molly went to watch him at a festival last week and I would have loved to have gone with her and been able to enjoy it as mates. His fiance is lovely and they've got a gorgeous little one. It would be great to have a better relationship. Love to Jessie J I'm sending all of my love and prayers to Jessie J after her shock breast cancer diagnosis, it's just awful. I want to give her all of the strength in the world, I can't imagine what she's going through. I know she's got a little one too, so my heart is going out to all the family. My health anxiety has always been bad and, as I get older, hearing about people being diagnosed makes me so nervous. I have a lump on my armpit which is just swollen lymph nodes, but I've got to keep an eye on it anyway, which scares me. I recently found out my biological family history, because I never knew my dad or what health issues were on his side of the family, and my grandmother had breast cancer. Thankfully, I've been checked and i'm OK, but it's scary. A decade of love Love Island is back and I cannot wait to get stuck in - it's my guilty pleasure! We've got Love Island and then my series of Celebs Go Dating, so it's a good summer for TV! I've been so busy that I haven't seen much about the new islanders, but i'm sure they will be great. The show is celebrating ten years on TV and I really hope they do something to honour Caroline Flack - the show was her baby and she loved it. I was disappointed to see that she didn't get a tribute in the Decade Of Love special they did earlier this month, I think that's wrong. ‌ Jamie's baby joy I'm so happy for Made In Chelsea couple Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo, who have announced they're having a baby. They're a really great couple and I can't wait to see them as parents. It's such a beautiful thing to become parents for the first time and I'm wishing them all the best. I know they've been hosting Radio 1 together recently, which I think is great, but unfortunately I'm loyal to Heart FM - Amanda Holden cracks me up on the breakfast show! Back on track I'm feeling so much better this week after being run-down the last while. It's great to finally feel like myself again. I went to Oxford Natural Clinic last week to help me feel revitalised, and they topped up my Botox too, so I'm feeling glam again. Aside from filming Celebs Go Dating, which we are almost finished with, I've just been spending time with the family. Lilly has been home this week from Ireland and Molly's also just arrived, so I'm happy to have my babies back. I always love having the kids at home - it's the best feeling in the world.

Sophie Habboo hits back after cruel backlash and nepotism accusations over her new Radio 1 job with Jamie Laing

Some listeners had threatened to switch off as they slammed the latest hiring by bosses Mic Drop Sophie Habboo hits back after cruel backlash and nepotism accusations over her new Radio 1 job with Jamie Laing SOPHIE Habboo has hit back at cruel backlash and nepotism accusations over her new BBC Radio 1 job with Jamie Laing. Station fans had previously threatened to switch off as they slammed the decision to put Made In Chelsea star Sophie, 30, on the airwaves as "gross". Sharing an expert from an i article to Instagram, Sophie wrote on her Stories today: "Thank you @carsonsarah @theipaper. "I've been reflecting on my first week of Radio 1 and it's been such a surreal experience to connect with the nation. I love it!!!" Chief Culture Writer Sarah Carson had praised Sophie in her opinion piece, claiming - while her hiring may not be "fair - the reality star still "deserved" her place. Advertisement She wrote: "The primary function of Radio 1 in the afternoons is providing a bit of distraction, energy, and silliness as people leave work or school. "It's not supposed to be challenging, or specialist - it's low-stakes, unwind, chatty stuff that needs someone sparky on the mic between the pre-made playlists. "Habboo is likeable, a sharp wit, withering, quick to laugh, and sweet. She's smart, comfortable being open about her relationship, self-effacing, and happy to indulge a bit of nonsense (she needs to be, being married to Laing). "She feels like a friend - the kind who gives you tough love while giving your arm a gentle squeeze - and she's got charisma. That counts for a lot more than skill and experience in this landscape." Advertisement Her comments were a far cry from some listeners, who had slammed the latest hiring by bosses. On the official social media account of BBC Radio 1, fans flocked to the comments section as they claimed the station has "fallen" in standards. Vick Hope finally reveals pregnancy - and date she's going on maternity leave from BBC Radio One One disgruntled listener fumed: "How far we've fallen from Vick and Jordan…" A second exclaimed: "There is something really gross, about two such privileged and independently wealthy (the Laings)given access to prime time national radio shows over people who have trained and studied for years in media." Advertisement "Please get some good DJs back in the drive time slot. It's getting embarrassing," stated a third user. While someone else raged: "Wealthy Reality stars just being handed roles for nothing now. They're sooo unrelatable." And a fifth added: "Im a big radio 1 fan but shouldve been jerry .....jamie and sophie is a bad move be a switch off for me sorry." Many longtime fans of the station directly blamed bosses for a decline as they hired "influencers". Advertisement They slammed the decision not to look for upcoming talent or give the role to an existing cover presenter who has trained for the job "for years". Another fan noted: "Where is the dislike button? "There are so many hard working and capable presenters covering gigs on R1 atm, how undermining that they weren't given the chance to show the listeners what they're capable of!!" Someone else agreed" "Really glad I'm not the only one who was disappointed by this update. Advertisement "It really doesn't sit right with me when there's people trying so hard to get a break. It's a no from me I'm afraid." Please get some good DJs back in the drive time slot. It's getting embarrassing Radio 1 fan While another added: "I think I'll be finding a different radio station to listen to for my 'going home' slot in the week now. "Something just doesn't sit right with me, that his wife has got the job… when there must be some amazing local talent & those that have worked really hard in the industry that will have been overlooked for celebrity privilege…" One more fan stated: "Radio 1 turning into a constant influencer podcast.. what happened to actually knowing music to being a radio DJ! Many years of listening, only holding on for Greg! Time to switch!" 'Harvey came out of a period which you can't really recreate because he was a lot of menace, as well as a lot of humour, so I don't know if you get bands that could really come up with that and plus it was a strange mixture of rock and music hall almost.'
