A person has died after a petrol tanker rolled on State Highway 5 near Whakarewarewa around 2am on Friday.
The highway remains closed with diversions in place at the northern and southern ends of SH5, police say.
Drivers should expect delays.
Contractors would be clearing debris and fuel spilt across the highway on Friday morning.

Auckland bus catches fire outside Birkenhead depot

A bus fire in Birkenhead, Auckland. Photo: Pippa Lynch / supplied Auckland Transport (AT) said it is investigating the cause of a bus catching fire outside its depot in Birkenhead on Friday morning. It said staff noticed smoke coming from the engine of the diesel-powered bus around 8.48am. Fire and Emergency said the fire was put out just after 9am. AT said there were no passengers on the bus when it caught fire, and no one was injured. A video posted to social media showed the tail of the bus ablaze and emitting large plumes of smoke. In May, another AT diesel bus running on a route in Epsom caught fire . A driver helped to safely evacuate passengers. In March, an AT bus caught fire on Karangahape Road. In December last year, an AT bus caught fire in Westgate . AT has been approached for comment on the latest incident. Police were callled to the scene about 8.30pm Thursday. Photo: RNZ/ Marika Khabazi Motorists heading to Wellington from Lower Hutt face a lengthy detour, after a two-vehicle crash. Police say there are serious injuries, after the accident in the southbound lanes of State Highway Two, just north of the Ngauranga interchange. The highway southbound is closed from the Dowse Drive interchange and Petone. Northbound lanes are open. Motorists will have to take State Highway 58, the Haywards Hill and State Highway One, until the road is re-opened.
