Wayne Rooney hits back at Tom Brady's ‘work ethic' comment, questions Birmingham City owner's awareness: ‘Not the NFL'
Former England and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has fired back after finding himself at the wrong end of some fiery comments directed his way by American NFL great Tom Brady, who recently took over as owner of Birmingham City FC, the club at which Rooney was acting as coach two seasons ago. Wayne Rooney and Tom Brady have shared a few sharp words following a release of an Amazon Prime docuseries on Birmingham City FC. Speaking on his podcast The Wayne Rooney Show, the English star explained how Brady's questioning of his work ethic and demeanor while in charge of Birmingham stung and felt 'unfair'. "I think it was a very unfair comment. When I went into Birmingham, they were in a mess really,' explained Rooney, who has had a tough history in terms of his managerial career after trying to make the switch from his playing days. 'Hence the fact that, the players weren't really the players who could take the club forward.' 'Don't think he really understood football…' Rooney's tenure at Birmingham in the 23/24 season coincided with Brady's onboarding as part-owner and chairperson, a season which was covered in Amazon Prime docuseries 'Brady & The Blues: Birmingham City'. However, it was an unhappy year for the team, as they were relegated from the EFL Championship and into the third division of English football. In the docuseries, Brady and his business manager Ben Rawitz had commented on Rooney, questioning his work ethic and describing him as 'lackadaisical'. However, for a player considered to be one of the most determined and committed to come through the England systems in its long history, the comments didn't go down well for Rooney. "We knew that and Tom [came in] the day before a game, where the day is a little bit light anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well at the time, maybe he does now…' explained the 39-year-old. 'Football is not NFL…' Rooney also explained that the disconnect stemmed from how the NFL lifestyle sees players go at 110% throughout the season, which isn't a realistic option in the much longer, more taxing world of football. "But what he does understand is, he's a hard worker, we know that, so that's why I'm really disappointed with the comment. Because football is not NFL - NFL works for 3 months a year, players do need rest as well, so I think he was very unfair the way he's come out and portrayed that,' said Rooney. Rooney would be the first to admit that his coaching experience has been disastrous, first being relegated with Derby County following a massive points deduction, before overseeing much of Birmingham's relegation season, and then joining Plymouth Argyle only to part ways halfway through the season with the Pilgrims in last place. Nevertheless, despite not having cracked it at any level as a manager, Rooney remains one of England's finest players in history, both in terms of talent and his dedication to the sport, explaining why the Birmingham owner's comments chafed in such a manner.

‘He didn't understand football': Wayne Rooney hits back after Tom Brady questions his work ethic
Wayne Rooney and Tom Brady (Images via Getty Images) When Tom Brady bought into Birmingham City, no one expected the NFL legend to become the star of a football (yes, soccer ) feud. But here we are. In Amazon Prime's new docuseries Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues , the seven-time Super Bowl champ doesn't just sip the tea, he pours the whole pot on Wayne Rooney 's short-lived managerial stint. His main gripe? Rooney's work ethic. And Rooney? Let's just say he fired back with a perfectly curved shot, claiming Brady 'didn't really understand football. ' Now, fans are throwing jerseys and tweets in the air, picking sides like it's a derby day. Tom Brady's blunt critique of Wayne Rooney's time at Birmingham City Tom Brady became a minority owner of Birmingham City in August 2023, right before the club brought in Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as manager in October. Hopes were high, but the honeymoon barely lasted, Rooney's 83-day run saw just two wins in 15 games, and the club was eventually relegated. In the docuseries, Brady didn't hold back: 'I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic. I mean, I don't know, I don't have great instincts on that.' Tom Brady blasts Wayne Rooney 😳 He also called the squad from Rooney's tenure 'lazy and entitled,' and admitted that replacing the coach wasn't enough to stop the slide. For Brady, leadership energy and day-to-day drive are non-negotiables, and he clearly felt something was missing. Wayne Rooney claps back with a football reality check Wayne Rooney wasn't about to let that go unanswered. Speaking to BBC in an interview, Rooney said: 'Tom came in once, which was the day before a game, which is a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well at the time. Maybe he does now, Rooney called Brady's comments 'very unfair,' pointing out that Brady reportedly visited the training ground only once and on a light day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo He also stressed the major difference between NFL's 17-game season and the year-round grind of football, hinting that Brady might not fully appreciate the demands of the sport on players and staff. Fans are already picking their fighter Social media is doing what social media does, turning this into a full-on sporting civil war. NFL fans are nodding along with Brady, praising his 'championship mindset.' UK football fans, on the other hand, are rallying behind Rooney, insisting the American legend doesn't get 'proper football.' Memes, sarcastic tweets, and even mock match posters are making the rounds. Whether you're wearing a Brady jersey or a Rooney scarf, one thing's clear, Birmingham City just landed in the global spotlight for all the wrong (or right, depending on how much you love drama) reasons. And with the docuseries still fresh, the debate isn't slowing down. Football, meet American football, now fight. ‘Football is not NFL': Wayne Rooney ‘disappointed' about Tom Brady's comments on his work ethic
Former Manchester United and England great Wayne Rooney said that he was left disappointed about comments made by NFL star Tom Brady, also the minority owner of English club Birmingham City where Rooney was coach for a 83-day stint, in a recent docuseries. In the documentary titled 'Built in Birmingham', Brady said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's (Wayne Rooney) work ethic.' Rooney branded the comments as a little unfair. 'Tom came in once, which was the day before a game, which is a little bit lighter anyway,' Rooney said in an interview with the BBC published on Thursday, 'and I don't think he really understood football that well at the time. Maybe he does now,' he said on BBC. 'But what he does understand is that he's a hard worker. We know that. So that's why I'm really disappointed with the comment, because football is not NFL. NFL works for three months in a year, players do need rest as well, so I think he was very unfair in the way he's come out and portrayed that,' he added. The England forward, however, said that he still had a lot of respect for Brady as well as the club. 'Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively — he's one of the greatest, if not the greatest athlete of all time,' Rooney said. 'And Birmingham do look like they are getting it right now, which is good.' In the campaign when Rooney was manager, Birmingham slipped down the second-tier Championship. They, however, secured immediate promotion last season and is back in the Championship — one league away from the Premier League. After Birmingham, Rooney had taken the charge at Plymouth but was relieved of his duties in December 2024, lasting just 7 months with the club winning just 4 out of 23 matches this season. He's also been the coach at MLS team DC United and Derby County.
