Cowboys might poach a coach from Sean Payton's staff

USA Today26-01-2025

A Denver Broncos assistant coach is in high demand.
We already knew Broncos assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo was a candidate for the special teams coordinator openings with the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. Now a third team has entered the mix.
The Dallas Cowboys are also interviewing Banjo for their ST opening, according to a report from ESPN's Todd Archer.
Landing a coordinator position this offseason would be an impressive rise for Banjo. He played as a safety and special teams ace in the NFL from 2013-2022 before hanging up his cleats and transitioning to coaching.
Broncos coach Sean Payton hired Banjo as an assistant special teams coach in 2023 and after just two years on the job, Banjo is now a candidate for a big promotion.
Denver might consider Banjo for its own coordinator opening after firing Ben Kotwica, but Darren Rizzi is believed to be the Broncos' preferred candidate to replace Kotwica.
Elsewhere on the coaching front, the Chicago Bears want to interview Denver executive David Shaw and tight ends coach Declan Doyle for their offensive coordinator position. We will track all of the team's coaching staff developments on Broncos Wire.

PFF is at it again, this time disrespecting Pat Surtain

PFF is at it again, this time disrespecting Pat Surtain Does Pro Football Focus have something against the Denver Broncos? Nik Bonitto is coming off a second-team All-Pro nod in 2024. PFF has him ranked as the 23rd-best pass rusher in the NFL (below Bradley Chubb). Zach Allen also received second-team All-Pro recognition last fall. PFF has him ranked as the league's 20th-best interior defensive lineman (below John Franklin-Myers). Meanwhile, Pat Surtain just won Defensive Player of the Year in 2024. He was recognized as the best overall defender -- regardless of position -- last season. Yet PFF's cornerback rankings have PS2 ranked No. 2 behind Sauce Gardner. "The reigning Defensive Player of the Year has recorded an 89.5 PFF coverage grade over the past three seasons, ranking second among cornerbacks, and his PFF advanced coverage grade places third," John Kosko wrote of Surtain on PFF's website. Allen has received little national recognition, while Bonitto became more of a household name last season. Surtain is an established star, widely considered the best cornerback in the NFL. PFF disrespecting all three is strange, but it has to be a coincidence. The site gave the Broncos an "A" grade for their offseason, so the rankings don't feel like a conscious decision to disrespect the club, but a reflection of a flawed grading system. As Bo Nix embraces Denver, Greg Penner notes QB is 'totally focused on football'

As Bo Nix embraces Denver, Greg Penner notes QB is 'totally focused on football' Like Peyton Manning before him, Bo Nix has fully bought into the city of Denver. Now entering his second year with the Denver Broncos and his first offseason as the unquestioned starting quarterback, Nix went on a sports tour this spring, visiting the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche before later throwing out a first pitch for the Colorado Rockies. Speaking at the NFL's annual league meetings in March, Broncos owner Greg Penner was asked about the team's quarterback embracing the city of Denver. 'I'd say the first and most important thing is he's totally focused on football," Penner said. "It's been great. He's been in the facility this offseason, getting in his workouts and treatment with the other players and building those relationships. At the same time, it was fun to see him at the Nuggets game and an Avalanche game in the same weekend. "I think that's great for him, just for the fans to see him out and about in the community and [he is] starting to get involved in some community efforts. I know he did some hospital visits, and he's going to be hosting a youth camp. Again, he's totally focused on football and understands there's some other things that go with it. He's a worker and going to continue to improve." Nix, 25, is now the face of the franchise. He has not yet reached Manning levels of adoration in the city, but Denver is falling in love with the young quarterback. Up next for Nix is the team's quest to win the AFC West and return to the playoffs in 2025. The city will be behind them. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Broncos' Sean Payton Speaks Out On JK Dobbins' Team Visit

Broncos' Sean Payton Speaks Out On JK Dobbins' Team Visit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite using their second round pick to select UCF running back, RJ Harvey, there is still a feeling that the Denver Broncos' RB room could use some reinforcements. Advertisement Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime and Tyler Badie are all nice complementary, auxiliary pieces, but none feel like they can be part of a hard-hitting, one-two punch with Harvey. So it makes sense that the team planned a visit with free agent, and ex Charger and Raven, JK Dobbins on Thursday. And head coach, Sean Payton, had some complementary words to say about the former AFC West rival, per Mike Klis. 'Another good football player that we've seen firsthand." Payton said to the media on Thursday, "I've seen for a while the importance of that position group. We really like the group right now we're working with, it's just another opportunity to possibly bring in another good football player to help us win.' JK Dobbins, Baltimore RavensPaul Rutherford-Imagn Image Dobbins is not necessarily an earth-shatteringly big name, but he is certainly an excellent back who would undoubtedly be on a roster right now as the RB1 - or high end 2 - if it were not for consistent injuries that have threaten to derail his otherwise potential-filled career. Advertisement Even though the former second round pick missed four games in 2024, he still managed 905 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns, with an additional 153 receiving yards off of 32 receptions. Of the backs still left unsigned in the NFL, Dobbins has arguably the best case for being a true, quality starting back in the league - and could be an excellent mentor and teammate for Harvey over the next season or two. That is, if he does end up signing with the Broncos.
