Two Chinese nationals arrested on India-Nepal border for ‘suspicious activities'

Indian Express29-05-2025
Two Chinese nationals have been arrested from the Jatahi-Pipraun border in Madhubani district of Bihar after they were allegedly seen taking photographs in the sensitive border area late Wednesday evening.
Madhubani Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar confirmed that the two have been nabbed from the India-Nepal border in a joint operation by the district police and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
'Both individuals have been arrested under the Foreigners Act 1946. During inspection, we couldn't find any valid travel documents or visas. During initial questioning, it was revealed that they had been travelling in Nepal for the past three months and have crossed the border in the last few days,' the officer said,
SP Kumar further added: 'During our preliminary investigation, we found some questionable content on their mobile phones, which can't be disclosed right now as investigations are still ongoing. However, we will be taking them on remand for further interrogation, and if needed, we will also seek assistance from central agencies'.
Local sources claimed that some 'anti-India videos' have been found on one of the suspect's phones. They also claimed that while communication was difficult with the suspects — only one of whom spoke some English — translators and language experts were called in to assist with the investigation.
Authorities are now trying to establish the identities, motives and activities of both individuals, officials said.

Tech glitch: Youth receives calls from famous cricketers after SIM mix-up

Raipur: A technical glitch resulted in international cricketer Rajat Patidar 's mobile number being allotted to a youth in the Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh. The incident came to light when Manish Bisi, 21, a resident of Madagaon village, started receiving calls from cricketers like Virat Kohli, Yash Dayal, and AB de Villiers. The number, which was inactive for nearly six months, was re-allotted to Manish in a routine process, said Gariaband superintendent of police Nikhil Rakhecha. "It was a WhatsApp number and probably not in use for the last six months. As per company rules, a number that remains unused for over six months is allotted to other customers, which might have led to the allotment of the number to the Devbhog youth. We have now returned the number to cricketer Rajat Patidar," the SP said. Manish, a self-proclaimed fan of Virat Kohli and cricket, bought the new SIM card from a mobile shop in Devbhog in the last week of June. Manish's friend, Khemraj Bisi, helped him install WhatsApp on the new number a week later. The profile picture automatically displayed a photo of Rajat Patidar, which the youths initially dismissed as a software glitch. Soon, Manish and his friend began receiving calls from unknown numbers, with callers introducing themselves as various cricketers, including Kohli and AB de Villiers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain| search ads Find Now Undo The callers, who were attempting to reach Rajat Patidar, addressed the youths by his name. Thinking it was a prank, the two youths continued to speak to the cricketers in a lighthearted manner for about 15 days. The matter escalated when Rajat Patidar, who was unable to use his old number, contacted the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell. The MP police then reached out to Gariaband police to resolve the issue. A police team subsequently visited the village and asked Manish to return the SIM card. The SIM has since been sent to Rajat Patidar's address. The youths, who are avid cricket fans, expressed hope that Rajat Patidar would meet them in person someday, calling the incident an unforgettable experience. The Devbhog SHO said that the SIM card has been sent by post. Cricketer Patidar plays for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket and captains Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Khemraj told TOI that when Virat Kohli called the number, Manish, who is shy in nature and not comfortable communicating, handed the phone to him. "I spoke to Kohli Sir and thought it was a prank call — I couldn't believe it. Then we received a second call immediately. The calls came after the number was activated, about 15 days after we purchased the SIM card at the end of June. Ten to fifteen minutes after Kohli Sir's call, we received a call from S. Dayal. About an hour later, we got a call from AB de Villiers, who spoke in English, which we couldn't understand. The call lasted just two to four seconds before he hung up. We are both fans of Kohli Sir and want to meet him at least once. Our villagers are also keen to meet Kohli Sir," Khemraj said. "The Devbhog police came to us and asked for the SIM card back, saying it belonged to a VIP. We returned it to them," Khemraj added. One day, a call was received from another number. The caller identified himself as Rajat Patidar. "We took this call as a joke, just like we did with the earlier ones. Rajat kept requesting the SIM back, but we continued to make fun of him. Then Rajat said, 'I'll send the police,' and about 10 minutes later, the police arrived," Khemraj said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Nimisha Priya case: Victim's brother demands immediate execution

Kochi: Abdul Fattah Mahdi, brother of victim Talal Abdo Mahdi, has made a fresh plea to Yemen's deputy attorney general to execute Keralite nurse Nimisha Priya at the earliest. In a Facebook post on Saturday, Abdul said he met the deputy attorney general for the third time and demanded immediate implementation of the trial court ruling. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He also shared a letter signed by the victim's heirs and addressed to the deputy attorney general. Describing the murder as "unprecedented in the history of Yemen", the letter sought urgent implementation of the death sentence. "We affirm and clarify that our only demand is the immediate implementation of the legal retaliation ruling. We will not accept any other alternative, whatever it may be. We have emphasised this to you repeatedly, which necessitates the implementation of the ruling without delay," read an English translation of the letter in Arabic. It also said the family was seeking fairness and urgent instructions to set a date for the implementation of the death sentence, to do justice to the heirs of the victim, achieve justice, and deter anyone who would dare to commit such crimes. Earlier, the victim's brother had refuted claims of negotiations on the death sentence as well as accepting reconciliation. Nimisha, hailing from Kollengode in Palakkad, was accused of murdering Talal, with whom she started a health clinic in Sana'a and later reportedly entered into a marriage. She was also accused of chopping his body and dumping the body parts in a water tank. According to her family, Talal tortured her and illegally seized her passport, which led to the murder. A trial court sentenced her to death in 2018, and this verdict was later upheld by an appeals court. The execution was earlier scheduled in July, but deferred following the intervention of political and religious leaders.

Pakistan: Rights group accuses authorities of conducting surveillance, harassing Baloch protesters in Islamabad

The Baloch families sit-in in Islamabad demanding the release of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leaders and an end to enforced disappearances in Pakistan's Balochistan continued for the 26th consecutive day on Sunday even as the BYC accused the Pakistani authorities of maintaining road blocks, conducting surveillance and harassing protesters instead of addressing their legitimate demands. According to the BYC, Baloch protesters, including elderly women and young children, continued to stay on the roadside without shelter amid scorching heat as authorities did not allow them to set up a camp. The protesters held the banner with the message "Stop Collective Punishment" and "Release BYC leaders." The banners also featured pictures of BYC leaders, including Mahrang Baloch. In a statement shared on X, BYC stated: "Today marks the 26th consecutive day of the Baloch families' sit-in in Islamabad, held to demand the release of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leaders and an end to enforced disappearances in Balochistan. Amidst scorching heat, these families including elderly women and young children remain on the roadside without shelter, as authorities continue to deny them the right to set up a camp." "The road to the Islamabad Press Club remains sealed, cutting them off from the space traditionally meant for victims to raise their voices. Instead of addressing their legitimate demands, Pakistani authorities maintain road blockades, conduct surveillance, and harass participants," it added. On August 8, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed grave concern over the escalating human rights crisis and deteriorating state of fundamental rights and civic freedoms in Balochistan. A report of the fact-finding mission of HRCP titled 'Balochistan's Crisis of Trust' revealed a disturbing pattern of continued enforced disappearances, shrinking civic space, erosion of provincial autonomy, and unchecked impunity - conditions that continue to fuel public alienation and political instability in the province. "Enforced disappearances emerged as the most urgent and widespread human rights concern during the mission. Testimonies from political leaders, civil society actors, and law enforcement officials collectively point to the scale, impunity, and evolving character of this practice. Accounts suggest that the phenomenon, far from being isolated or exceptional, has become systematic, thereby undermining the rule of law and severely eroding public trust in state institutions," the HRCP report read. The rights body also called for independent investigations into alleged reprisals against those who speak up against enforced disappearances. The mission noted that "while militant attacks targeting ordinary citizens, including non-Baloch settlers, are indefensible and must be prosecuted, the passage of the Anti-Terrorism (Balochistan Amendment) Act 2025 is deeply problematic". It mentioned that "the law permits 90-day detentions without meaningful judicial oversight, raising concerns about the potential for torture and abuse". The mission urged the Pakistani government to withdraw the Act and instead ensure that all counterterrorism efforts comply with the country's human rights obligations. According to the report, electoral manipulation and the political sidelining of nationalist parties have severely undermined public trust in democratic processes in Balochistan.
