Wegmans Is Expanding to Its Most Western Location Yet
Fans of the store in Pennsylvania could not be more excited at the announcement.In my town, you could throw a stone in any direction and hit the same grocery chain. One "giant" looms large here, with the exception of a singular Whole Foods and a lone Trader Joe's on the periphery. If we need a quick box of cereal or head of lettuce, we're most likely running to the local Giant Eagle, whether we like it or not.
However, that will soon change with the introduction of another new grocery go-to that's beloved in the Northeast. Yinzers, rejoice! Wegmans is coming to the Pittsburgh area for the first time.
Wegmans announced in the new year that it will be opening a new location in the Pittsburgh suburb of Cranberry Township—right down the road from where I live, and I couldn't be more thrilled. No shade to Giant Eagle, but as the saying goes, variety is the spice of life. Wegmans, which started in Rochester, N.Y. in 1916, has grown to 110 locations across the East Coast, but has never been this far west before (though its Erie, Pa. location is a close second).
So what makes this big news around these parts? Other than the fact that our options are somewhat limited to one dominant chain, Wegmans is a trusted name in the grocery game that is sure to shake up our suburban routines. Now we'll have a new place to shop for all the ingredients we need for our pecan balls, Pittsburgh salads, and chipped ham.
Wegmans boasts a "village concept" in its stores, which makes shoppers feel like they are meandering through an outdoor market in a busy village square versus going up and down aisles of a mega-store (which, in reality, they still are).
And what village would be complete without a central hub? The heart of any Wegmans is arguably its market café, offering famished customers restaurant-quality prepared foods, like its King salmon rolls, meatball subs, and General Tso's from the hot bar. Not to mention the chocolate chip cookies and rotisserie chickens that are so good, they could pass for homemade.
Beyond the café, the shelves are lined with a vast selection of grocery staples, and fans swear by the store brand for bargains on seltzer, pasta sauce, dressings, and even cereal. Wegmans is also known for its top-tier produce, meats, and seafood, all offered at a better value compared to competitors. Is it any wonder I'm excited about this new development? And I'm not the only one.
"We've received thousands of requests for a Wegmans in the Pittsburgh region since opening our first Pennsylvania store over 30 years ago," said Dan Aken, vice president of real estate and store planning, in a press release. "We're excited to have finally found the right location to bring Wegmans to the Pittsburgh area."
Other fans on Reddit are with me, too: "I dropped to my knees in Giant Eagle," exclaimed one, in the posting that featured the announcement. "It's one of the best grocery stores there is. Plus it's one of the best companies to work for," added another.
Similarly, Facebook users chimed in with comments like, "Dreams do come true" and "Such exciting news, thank you!"
Although there's no official timeline yet for the construction of the 115,000 square-foot Cranberry Wegmans, it's expected to open in 2027. I say, the sooner the better—I need all the reminders of my New York roots I can get here in the 'Burgh.

The 1970s was a revolutionary era for Chinese restaurants in America when Chinese-American fare was pushed to the sidelines by the fiery, spicy, sweet and sour cooking of Sichuan and Hunan provinces. Suddenly restaurants with those names in them––Sichuan Pavilion, Hunan Village––were popping up in strip malls, not least along the eight-mile stretch of Central Avenue in Westchester County, New York. The problem was that most lapsed into sameness, replacing chow mein and egg foo young with fried dumplings and General Tso's chicken. Now, pretty much everywhere, Chinese restaurants in America are an amalgam of Chinese and Japanese concepts, often with sushi counters alongside a kitchen driven my wok-fried beef, chicken and seafood. To find more regional food you had to ferret it out in cities' Chinatowns. O Mandarin in Hartsdale (there's another in Hicksville, Long Island) has transcended those clichés by featuring the cuisine of its name, led by Chef Eric Gao and owners Gen Lee and Peter Liu, who already had a following at their Euro-Asian Bistro in Port Chester. Since opening in 2017, O Mandarin has rarely had an empty table, and there is a very large Chinese clientele, which is not often the case in suburban Chinese restaurants. Reservations are essential weekdays and weekends, and there is a nightly bustle in the big dining room set with Chinese woodwork and hanging lamps that put you in mind of finer dining rooms in Chinatown. The booths are coveted, and there's a cozy smaller room to the rear. The noise level is remarkably moderate. It is a fast-paced evening, which the waiters and kitchen keep to, so dishes may come out in more profusion than you imagined. They serve wine and beer but no liquor. The menu is unnecessarily long––which seems to be a given in Chinese restaurants everywhere––and will appeal to those who still wish to order wonton soup, chao mein and kung pao chicken. But the real interest here is in the Mandarin dishes––a whole page of them, as well as Chef's Signature items, from slippery but crisp thousand layer tofu flavored with pork belly, Chinese celery and chili pepper to crispy whole fish with a black bean sauce and complex braised beef brisket in a clay pot, and succulent twice cooked pork belly to 'Toothpick lamb' and spicy fermented beans and minced pork. Dan Dan noodles, a Sichuan dish, is a rich mélange of thin Chinese spaghetti with a sweet-salty balance, a little vinegar and chili oil. Mandarin, which includes Beijing cuisine, is most famous for its dumplings, especially the soup dumplings that are delicate casings enclosing minced pork and ginger and red hot broth that spurts out when bitten into and floods the palate with flavors. Soong dishes are a snack item in China, composed of minced, seasoned chicken or shrimp and served in a crisp iceberg lettuce leaf, which makes for a refreshing first course. Peking duck is also a Mandarin dish, and here it comes with the thinnest possible, translucent pancakes in which to fold the roasted duck meat, paper thin skin scallion shreds and cucumber and brushed with hoisin sweet sauce. It's available as half ($52) or a full duck ($95). The rarely encountered scallion bubble pancake is a kind of Indian puffed poori bread served with a red curry dip. Despite the menu being so inclusive, on my visits I found only a few dishes suffered from blandness or a lack of interest in the kitchen But if you choose with some discretion, leaning to the Mandarin and Sichuan dishes, you will find O Mandarin a very fine diversion from the pan-Asian restaurants that dominate in the New York area. Apple loomed large at Google's NYC event. At "Made By Google 2025," the company debuted its Pixel 10 and Pixel Watch 4. It also took several shots at Apple, with apparent references to the rival's AI delays, iPhone camera quality, and the green vs. blue text bubble debate. The event began with a conversation between host Jimmy Fallon and Rick Osterloh, Google's SVP of platforms and devices. Fallon asked about AI for phones — and Osterloh took a quick dig at Apple in his response. "There has been a lot of hype about this, and frankly, a lot of broken promises too, but Gemini is the real deal," Osterloh said. At the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced the integration of Apple Intelligence, its AI suite, into Siri. Apple formally delayed the AI update in March — a rare move for the tech giant — saying it needed more time to get it right. Google recently teased the delay in an ad for the Pixel 10. "If you buy a new phone because of a feature that's 'coming soon,' but it's been 'coming soon' for a full year, you could change your definition of 'soon' — or you could just change your phone," the ad's narrator said.
