Four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers has told the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers he will sign a one-year deal and participate in next week's mini-camp, according to multiple reports.
The 41-year-old quarterback struggled last season in a 5-12 campaign with the New York Jets, who fired coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas along the way.
ESPN and The NFL Network reported that Rodgers told the Steelers he would arrive on Friday to sign a contract and begin preparing for workouts Tuesday through Thursday of next week.
The Steelers lacked a veteran signal caller after Russell Wilson was signed by the New York Giants, but in Rodgers have landed a future Hall of Fame quarterback with 62,952 career passing yards and 503 career touchdown passes.
Pittsburgh will offer Rodgers a chance to face his former clubs with a season opener on September 7 at the Jets and an October 26 home game against the Green Bay Packers, with whom Rodgers won the 2011 Super Bowl by beating the Steelers 31-25.
In a 20-year career, Rodgers won MVP honours in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021 with the Packers.
Last season, Rodgers completed 368 of 584 passes for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. (AFP)

Thunder seal commanding 2-0 lead over T-Wolves

Thunder seal commanding 2-0 lead over T-Wolves League MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (#2) celebrates with teammate Chet Holmgren after the win. Photo: Reuters Newly crowned NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to an imposing 118-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves to open up a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. Gilgeous-Alexander was presented with his MVP award on court before the game but any suggestions that the celebrations would distract from the task at hand quickly evaporated. Roared on by a loud and passionate home crowd, the Canadian top-scored for the Thunder with 38 points and added eight assists and three rebounds. OKC head to Minnesota on the back of their 60th win by double figures this season and in buoyant mood. The Timberwolves will take some encouragement from a strong showing from Anthony Edwards, who after disappointing in Game One, posted 32 points with six assists and nine rebounds. But if they are to fight their way back into this series they will need to tighten up their defense, improve on 41.4 percent field-goal shooting and get more out of Julius Randle who was restricted to six points. Afer a tight first half, the game was won by a blistering third quarter from the Thunder, who outscored Minnesota by 14 points. A Chet Holmgren alley-oop dunk with 2:54 left in the quarter opened up a 17-point 82-65 lead. Although the Timberwolves were able to reduce the deficit to 10 points in the fourth, the outcome was never in real doubt. Jalen Williams had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Holmgren added 22 points for the Thunder. Gilgeous-Alexander said the team's ability to go on strong runs had its roots in their strong defense. "It feels good. It starts with getting stops though, it always does. We get stops, we're able to play fast, play to our strengths, play in the open court, be special," he said. (AFP)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins NBA's MVP award

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins NBA's MVP award Gilgeous-Alexander is the Thunder's third-ever NBA MVP award winner. Photo: Reuters Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named Most Valuable Player in the NBA for the 2024-2025 season. Canadian-born Gilgeous-Alexander pipped Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets to the prize, which considers only performances during the regular season. Broadcasters TNT said that Gilgeous-Alexander won the vote 71-29 over Serbian Jokic, who has won the MVP award three times. Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished second to Jokic last year, shot almost 52 percent from the field as he led the Thunder to the best record in the league. Oklahoma City won 68 games and set a league record for scoring margin. "You try so hard throughout the season to not think about it and just worry about playing basketball and getting better and trying to win games," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "But as a competitor, as a kid dreaming about the game, it's always in the back of your mind and I am very grateful to be on this side of the ballot," he added. Gilgeous-Alexander led the league with 32.7 points per and also averaged 6.4 assists and 5.0 rebounds. The 26-year-old can yet crown his season with a championship with the Thunder 1-0 up in their Western Conference final against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Gilgeous-Alexander was quick to praise his team-mates for their role in the individual honour. "None of it is possible without the guys behind me. The amount of games we won and the fashion that we won the games is so impressive and it's probably the main reason why I get the award," he said. The last US-born player to win was James Harden in 2018. (AFP)
