Russell Watson reveals he contemplated jumping from hotel balcony in suicide bid amid agonising brain tumour battle

RUSSELL Watson revealed he briefly considered ending his life after being diagnosed with his first brain tumour. The opera singer, 58, was recording an album in Los Angeles in 2006 when he paid a visit to Cedars-Sinai Hospital after suffering excruciating headaches. 3 3 Russell had been experiencing them for months and on his flight to the States was in so much pain he was convinced he was going to die. An MRI scan revealed a pituitary tumour - later found to be benign - the size of two golf balls that required emergency surgery. Speaking on Kaye Adams' How To Be 60 podcast, he said: "My whole world came crashing down and the pain got worse – everything was exacerbated with the news of what he'd just told me. "I was staying in a hotel in Beverly Hills and I was on the 8th floor and it was the first time I'd ever felt this way. "I can't explain the pain – I've never felt anything like it before or since – it was like a dagger being pressed into the centre of my head and twisted. "It was excruciating and for one moment I stood on my hotel balcony. I literally just thought: 'f**k this, I've had enough.' And I felt like jumping." Fortunately, his mind drifted to his family and he didn't go through with it. He continued: "And then the thought of the children entered my head and they were little girls then - they're not going to manage without me. Back in the room. Went and lay on the bed, rinsed my face with cold water and took the pain on." Russell branded himself an "idiot" for staying in LA to complete his record before returning to the UK for a five-hour surgery at St George's Hospital, London. The classical singer was determined to finish the album that he felt at the time might be his legacy record were he to die. The impacts of the tumour, which was removed through his nose, are still felt to this day. Russell explained: "I'll be taking a lifetime of replacement drugs and hormones for as long as I'm here, predominantly to my pituitary gland which was pretty much decimated, so there's a constant reminder. "I have to take daily injections and tablets, particularly hydrocortisone, which I was told if I didn't take for a specific amount of time I wouldn't be here anymore. It's the lifesaving drug for me and growth hormones." In 2007, disaster struck again when a regrowth of the tumour stopped Russell in his tracks while he was making another album. Once again he needed emergency surgery, this time at Alexandra Hospital, Greater Manchester. It was followed by radiotherapy as part of his rehabilitation. Last November, Russell broke down in tears on The One Show when he received a video message from the consultant who had looked after him. Mr Lackett told him: "17 years on from that brave decision to have the surgery and look what a glittering career you've had in-between. "I can't tell you how much the team and I were so proud to watch you and your progress after that awful night when you were taken into hospital as an emergency." Emotional Russell responded by telling the hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp: "Oh deary me, what a man. And so lovely as well, so down to earth. Just a beautiful human being. "I will be eternally grateful to him." 3 Symptoms of a benign brain tumour A benign brain tumour is a mass of cells that grows relatively slowly in the brain. Benign means it in not cancerous. Non-cancerous brain tumours tend to stay in one place and do not spread. Some slow-growing tumours may not cause any symptoms at first. When symptoms occur, it's because the tumour is putting pressure on the brain and preventing a specific area of the brain from working properly. As the tumour grows and increases pressure in the skull, you might experience: New, persistent headaches that are sometimes worse in the morning or when bending over or coughing Feeling sick all the time Drowsiness Vision problems, such as blurred or double vision, loss of part of your visual field and temporary vision loss Epileptic seizures that may affect the whole body, or you may just have a twitch in one area See a GP if you develop any of these symptoms. They'll examine you and ask about your symptoms. If they suspect you may have a tumour or are not sure what's causing your symptoms, they may refer you to a brain and nerve specialist for further investigation. Source: NHS

This Morning star breaks down in tears as he says 'my father rarely talked about it'

This Morning star breaks down in tears as he says 'my father rarely talked about it' This Morning viewers were felt feeling emotional as show regular Gyles Brandreth broke down in tears live on-air Gyles was brought to tears as he spoke about his late dad (Image: ITV) This Morning regular Gyles Brandreth couldn't contain his emotion as he broke down in tears after opening up about his late father - who served in World War Two. ‌ During Friday's (August 15) episode of the ITV daytime chat show, hosts Emma Willis and Craig Doyle dedicated a special segment to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day), which brought World War Two to an end. ‌ The heartfelt segment took a deeply emotional turn as Gyles, a familiar face on This Morning, was brought to tears as he spoke about his late father. After watching an emotional clip, Gyles - appearing on the sofa alongside journalist Rachel Johnson went on to share how moving it was to see the King and Queen lead a two-minute silence. ‌ This Morning star Gyles Brandreth couldn't contain his emotions (Image: ITV) Emma started off by saying: 'To reflect further on this historical day, Gyles Brandreth and Rachel Johnson are back. It's so emotional when you watch that, it really does make you stop and think.' Gyles said: "To see there veterans, who were actually alive, taking part in what was for many people called the forgotten war. The people in Burma thought they were the forgotten army.' He continued: 'To see the King there, whose grandfather spoke at the end of war and said this is Victory over Japan Day, it was the final end.' Article continues below Gyles added: "Whenever we talk about the war, I think about my own parents. My father was in the army for six years during the Second World War in intelligence and he rarely talked about it.' A picture of his father then popped up on the screen and Gyles broke down in tears, saying: "There he is, bless him. Oh that's rather touching." Coronation Street fans fume as key scene 'ruined by unseen character'

Coronation Street fans were left fuming after their hopes of a key moment between their favourite couple Carla Connor and Lisa Swain, known as Swarla, was 'ruined' Coronation Street fans were left furious after discovering that a key scene yet to air in Friday's episode was 'ruined' by a character who isn't even on the show. Viewers of ITV's flagship soap that Carla Connor (Alison King) has been embroiled in a romance with DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) for almost a year now, and it looked as though they were set to get engaged after moving into number six. ‌ As well as the positive side of their relationship, fans are also aware that Carla is edging ever closer to getting to the bottom of Lisa's past with her ex-wife Becky, who was supposedly killed whilst in the line of duty four years ago. ‌ But fans of the fictional couple, who have become known as Swarla on social media, streamed an early ITVX release just before the weekend, and they immediately took to social media to make their opinions known. It comes after it was announced that one fan favourite is to 'reach breaking point' as part of an upcoming special. ‌ Warning, the rest of this article contains spoilers from Friday's episode available on ITVX. A scene saw Carla backtrack with her planned proposal to Lisa after hearing Lisa's late ex-wife Becky had proposed the very same way. After seeing the pair not move forward as teased, some fans shared their frustrations online. One said: "It's frustrating being a #swarla fan… How y'all doing after that episode?" Another said: "We really did only get crumbs today. The more I think about it the more I hate that the house move has just been shot in there…it's HUGE for both of them. It's frustrating!" A third fan wrote: "Im beyond frustrated with how the whole grief/mental health storyline is now being handled by @itvcorrie crumbs of screen time, totally fragmented & poorly written. If we're frustrated imagine how the GA feels," and another fan simply wrote: "Well and truly bamboozled" as they vented their anger after watching the episode. In recent weeks, viewers have been divided over the theory that Becky, who has never appeared on screen, is not actually dead. But the episode left one viewer hoping that she will never make an appearance. While praising Alison King they wrote: "I liked Alison's acting today a lot. She played the whole anxiety thing really well. Actually, I laughed at her sometimes. Hope Becky is really dead." ‌ Over the years, factory boss Carla has been involved in numerous storylines that have seen her married to Paul Connor, Tony Gordon, Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) and Nick Tilsley (Ben Price). She has been through a number of dramatic plots that have included multiple kidnaps, rape, becoming a murder suspect in the murder case of Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan), but one viewer insisted that they have had just about enough of the 'tiring' place the character is in now. They wrote: "Carla has been a #Corrie icon for nearly two decades and she rightfully has a lot of fans. This Becky stuff is becoming quite tiresome and old now. If Corrie wants the viewers to fall in love with #Swarla and start liking Lisa then they need to bring it to an end. "It's damaging the standard viewers opinion of Swarla as a couple and both Lisa and Carla as characters. Us diehard fans will obviously defend them to the end but come on... They've so much potential and when they're happy it's so well recieved! Can we please have more of that?!" ‌ The fan continued: "Does anyone else think that Corrie are ruining #Swarla with all of this trauma and Becky stuff? Of course us diehard Swarla fans are going to defend them to the end but to the standard viewer I actually can see why they find them, particularly Lisa tiresome. It's so sad!" The whole social media furore comes after Reddit users were left divided over the theory that Becky might actually be alive, and that fellow Weatherfield copper Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) might be involved. A user said: "My two ongoing theories are either Becky is still alive (and with the new information about her, she faked her own death because she was corrupt), or Kit is somehow involved with her death (or fake death). Because for a dead character whose never been seen, she sure has a lot of plot relevance..." But another disagreed, as they said: "The only reason I don't think Kit was involved in her death is because he only transferred to Weatherfield police last year. In one episode he said he heard Becky was a right laugh unlike Lisa." Another suggested that the mystery character could be Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly), who was last seen on the programme in 2012, although they wondered if that would ever be 'possible', given that she left for a life in Barbados and was recently said to be running a hotel in Belize.
